National teams contracts value

Hi guys, I'm new here and I was wondering if you know how the national teams rank in terms of player's annual contracts. I was curious to see the correlation(if any) between the value and their performance. Would be great if you could help and apologies if there is already such a thread. Thanks!

Well, if we would judge 5 or 10 period we could make some conclusions. IMO:

USA stands as one of the most overpaid NT. Their budget would beat any possible NT in huge difference, but they weren't that dominating in international tournaments this decade.

I believe France could pretend as the second most overpaid NT this decade. Parker, Diaw (NBA stars) and plenty of other NBA players mean very solid contracts and they were very unstable this decade in BB courts.

Lithuania, Greece, I think would stand somewhere in the middle. Lithuania could be one of the best NT here while some of our key players are underrated IMO (Šiška's contract is funny compering to his contribution, Kaukėnas was somehow unknown for big clubs for the long time), but lately some Lithuanian players hit some records (Šaras, Kleiza. Guess in which country they play ) Greece players have solid contracts while their players are playing in PAO/OLY mostly.

Spain and Argentina IMO is very adequate in the salaries and sport results. Very stable in both ends I guess

Italy comes as the most efficient NT this decade. Without superstars (arguably) they managed to be very tough in every tournament till 2006 I guess.

Theo Papaloukas = €3.5 million euros net

Dimitris Diamantidis = €2.1 million euros net

Vassilis Spanoulis = €1.9 million euros net

Ioannis Bourousis = €1.7 million euros net

Antonis Fotsis = €1.5 million euros net

Georgios Printezis = €1.2 million euros net

I'm pretty sure that those 10 players above have a great chance to make Greece's squad. Then after that the remaining 15 Greek players that I think have a good shot at the other 2 roster spots have salaries this season like this from highest to lowest:

I don't know how much Batis, Mavroeidis, and Kaimakoglou make but it should not be very much. However, I can say very confidently that both Kaimakoglou and Mavroeidis will get enormous raises next season and will have quite big contracts starting next season.

The Greek national team player pool has fairly high salaries compared to teams like USA, Spain, Argentina, France that are loaded with NBA players when you consider that they get paid in net terms and in euros, while NBA players get paid in dollars and in gross terms.

some mistakes here, for instance siskauskas is not playing and not going to play for LT team, strange to see lithuanian dude not knowing that and including him here

As for the thread - its way too early for it, because we do not know who is going to play and who is not for each team. Now its just bull crap, or at the very best very very aproximate

I hear you. However I'm not necessarily referring to the roster of the teams that will compete in next year's world cup. I'm working on a model for work and I'm trying to identify variables that can be proven to be determinants in the management/financing related decisions for a basketball club. By identifying such a trend I can derive conclusions that can be then used in the formation of the model which will test a different hypothesis. In any event, I was just looking to see if this can be a datapoint I could use and whether it's worth researching it. Anyway, I don't want to bore you with all that.

Interesting project there, I myself pursued a similar one in my uni years, about 12 years back, comparing performance and other variables such as race, experience, diminishing returns of years played (experience squared) to NBA players' earnings.

Whereas I myself have no data, here's a few pointers that might assist you in estimating the European teams' and Team USA's worth, once the rosters are finalised (perhaps a starting point for estimating the worth of teams from N.&S. America and Oceania too):

- NBA franchises are obliged to announce their players' wages, and therefore you should have no problem in finding them. A fairly accurate table containing all data is here.

-Teams in Europe don't have to disclose similar data. However, contract details of most players playing for Euroleague or Eurocup sides are here and here respectively. Whereas not official data, I've found the info gathered very reliable, based on media reports throughout Europe.

- Considering that wages in Europe are reported net, while the NBA ones gross, you'll find it hard to compare between the two. I suggest you transform all wages to net earnings in euros, using the prevailing escalating US Federal income tax brackets (this site will help you). However, bear in mind that there might be other sources of income, such as sponsorship deals, that push the actual tax percentage on total earnings upwards, and that there might be seperate local or State taxes to be paid that vary throughout the US. Due to the complexity of calculating after-tax income, I suggest you sacrifice accuracy by use a rule-of-thumb approach (for example net=60%*gross)
