I got a fun idea. All this armchair GMs around the trade deadlines are fun to read, so let's make an exercise. How would you build a team to win the NBA Championship. Here are some rules:

- You can sign any player you want, regardless where they are now
- You have to have 14 players on your roster
- When calculating a salary cap, you count the players contracts they are currently on.
- The exception are players that are on rookie contracts. For players on rookie contracts, take the league average for the position and add 20%. (For example for small forwards, the average salary is $7.99mil, add 20% on that and you will get $9.59mil if you want to add Ben Simmons).
- The salary cap is expected to be $99 million for the next season. You can sign players only up to that level. No luxury tax, going over the cap etc.
- You can be flexible with positions, but bear in mind you can't start 5 centers. Players need to be able to play the position you put them in. So for example, we can tolerate LeBron at Point Guard, but we ain't gonna tolerate Jokic there :)

Please add some rules and ideas you think could be good too. And let's start posting teams. Please separate your starters and the bench. If you want, you can also say something about rotation and minutes as well.

If you need info on salaries. I recommend Sportrac

You can also search any player you like and see their contract as well.

So we can't even get the benefit of rookie contracts?

Then we'll have to fill our rosters with overlooked guys on the cheap. Okay. Game on.

I'll post mine later.

I just think it is completely unrealistic to load up on let's say guys like Jokic at his price etc. So I came up with a system that might be a bit more fair.

Rookie contracts don't really reflect the quality of players at all. Since some are total busts, others are all stars and are playing for pennies. Their market value is completely different. This way it is still a bit more competitive and realistic. :D

Here is my first try at it :D I might make couple more, just for the fun of it :D

Jokic is the only one on the Rookie Scale deal. So I adjusted him accordingly :D

Not bad. I especially like the additions of Nwaba and Dinwiddie.

I like the defensive potential of Kahwi/George/Draymond :D Basically neutralize anything, good switching etc.

Some microwaves off the bench, lots of shooting. Important guys that can play without the ball and be efficient.

Kyrie Irving
Avery Bradley
Kevin Durant
Draymond Green
Derrick Favors

Trevor Ariza. Sixth man
Jeff Green
Dwyane Wade
Tyler Zeller
David West
Jose Calderon

Khem Birch. Inactive
Gerald Green inactive

I think it’s under 99 million.

I think it’s under 99 million.

Irving $18,868,625
Bradley $8,808,989
Durant $25,000,000
Green $16,400,000
Favors $12,000,000

Ariza $7,420,912
Green $1,471,382
Wade $1,471,382
Zeller $1,709,538
West $1,471,382
Calderon $2,328,652

Birch $815,615
Green $872,854

Total: $98,636,331

You are just under cap, but there is a small problem. You have 13 players :D :D :D You need to make room for one more :D

Good looking out coach. I think I am ok if I swap Calderon with Raymond Felton and throw in Daniel Theis as my fourteenth player.

Hey, it's your team. I have nothing against you even adding a legend like Dwight Buycks :D :D

why dont you change this rule, so we can have only a few players on team that have rookie contract?

Because even with the limit, lets say 2 players, you can get Jokic and Mitchell for 2 mil and change. That is just crazy.

Chris Paul
Klay Thompson
Kawhi Leonard
Dario Saric
Nicola Jokic

Milos Teodosic
Danny Green
Tomas Satoransky
P.J. Tucker
Domas Sabonis
Kristaps Porzingis 6th man
Jusuf Nurkic
Joseph Young Inactive
Omri Casspi Inactive

Team players based team. Highly skilled, intelligent. Bench somewhat vulnerable defensively, but would love seeing such team winning NBA. Tons of ball movement.

Some would say 8 Euros a bit too much, but 7 of them I like very much and they are all brilliant and cheap :D

I'll need to check the salaries to be sure but here's my team off the top of my head.

IT
Avery Bradley (Roughly 15-16 mil combined)
Covington (16-17 mil)
Draymond (16-17 mil)
Embiid (Roughly 25 mil)

Bench:

J Simms (6-7 mil)
Nwaba (1.5 mil or so)
Jeff Green (around 1-2 mil)
Marcus Morris(5 mil exactly)
Holmes (6-7 mil is average for a PF)
Tim Frazier (2 mil or so)
Gerald Green

Inactive:

Theis
Bryn Forbes

My team is predicated on penetrating point guards who can shoot, dynamic bigs who can shoot and play tough down low, and role players who can shoot and defend but also penetrate. In the starting five, IT and Avery play very well off of each other, and everybody other than IT can guard multiple positions and make up for his lack of defense. They can all play off the ball as role players, too. Same with the bench, just a bit different, with multiple different types of lineup possibilities.

CHBB, I doubt such team could win NBA. Not a single true super star to carry the team. Deep PO team probably.

Also not impressed with usagre taste this time. Too many shoot first players and some of them are marked with "not a championship type a la Melo" stamp on their faces unless they are in perfect situation. Such as Kyrie and Durant.

He does have Embiid as his superstar. I think my team is pretty well rounded. A small ball team of Irving, Bradley, Ariza, Durant and Draymond would be excellent defensively much like Golden State currently is. I have two go to great crunch time scorers who can get their own shot, and much like with Golden State Draymond will be my primary playmaker.

By the way it seems to me that your team has a lot of guys on their rookie deals so I don’t think you would be under the salary cap.

Solid arguments, however I doubt Irving can be a main dog in the super finals. You have to have that one extra talent as Leo in my roster (I may screwed up with salary cap I admit).

Is Embiid a superstar on a contender team?

Kyrie can play second fiddle to Durant like he did for LeBron. I agree he can never be the #1 on a championship team. Yeah I agree that CHBB’s team is lacking the one true undisputed superstar but despite his youth and inexperience I think Embiid is not that far away from becoming that.

I would primarily use this 8 man rotation in a playoff series with these minutes.

Kyrie Irving. 38
Avery Bradley. 36
Kevin Durant. 38
Draymond Green 38
Derrick Favors. 28

Trevor Ariza. 34
Jeff Green. 14
Dwyane Wade. 14

im actually impressed with this starting lineup, maybe i only would put KP instead of Saric, KP and Kawhii would make up for Jokic's bad rim protection, Jokic and CP could faciliate very well and balanced roster
