Dear FIBA,

If you are reading this please let these teams come together to battle it out for wildcards. We want another tournament. Oh, and don't forget to broadcast it on TV. ;)
:D:D:D

Dear bobo,

If you are reading this please let me imforn you that FIBA ain't reading nothing. We want less naive posts. Oh, and don't forget not to make another petition for FIBA again on this SITE. ;)

fadi el khatib who plays on champville(3rd best team in leb) scored 21pts in limited time in a win against the 2nd best jordanian team ....he just lost 15KG in 1 month and looks like he returned to his old level ...if he only scored like 5 pts instead of 2 against china in the semifinal we might,ve won so seems like he lost weight at the wrong time but this is another reason why leb should be picked(khatib losing 15KG :p)

off topic....

dec 13 seems so late they should make it earlier , Fiba does not need that long to pick teams and most lebanese want to know whether to reserve the tickets online or not before their all sold out  I have a strong feeling DR will be picked over leb :(

the lebanese federation should start lobbying for it as hard as they can. we must get the wild card.

i completely disagree on having wildcards in next year's world championships. The selection would be done obviously with politics. In the Oceania zone, it is very unfair that the only countries in the region, AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND, are always assured of a slot in the world basketball championships no matter what. What the FIBA should do is to make a new zone accomodating the middle east teams (they are crowding the Fiba asia tournament) like iran, jordan, qtar, lebanon and have a fiba asia-oceania zone which include countries like australia, new zealnd, china, korea, and philippines. every slot in the world championships should also be based on the place finished in each qualifying tournament, not in a selection process. in that way, all of the teams will be given equal and fair chance of getting a slot.

Mr.Pierre Kakhia (president of FLB)met Patrick Baumann yesterday nd 17 countries are asking for Wild cards :D

how r they 17 ? all the teams that did not qualify suck ...r kuwait and indonesia asking too ? if he told kakhia this than hes telling him indirectly that its gonna be hard for leb and if kakhia is telling us than hes telling us indirectly that its almost impossible for us to get it ...

4 spots for 17 countries --- hahaha how it can be stupid

4 spots for 17 countries --- hahaha how it can be stupid

4 spots for 17 countries.. How stupid the idea was.. It might causes wars
Lots of Efforts, and politics ...= fights

I have collected the teams which applied for a wild card..

In Fiba Europe Teams (7 teams) which applied for a wild card are the following
Russia (7th) --- ***
FYR Macedonia (9th) --- *
Poland (10th) --- *
Lithuania (11th) --- ***
Germany (12th) --- ***
UK (15th) --- **

Italy (Pre-Qualification Round) --- **

PS: * stands for the chance of getting WC

In Fiba America, teams whom couldn't Qualify
Dominican Rep (5th) --- ***
Uruguay(6th) --- **
Panama (7th) ---- Probably they applied for a wild Card --- *
Mexico (8th) ---- Probably they applied for a wild Card --- *

In Fiba Asia , teams whom couldn't Qualify :
Lebanon (4th) --- ***
Taiwan (5th) --- *
Qatar (6th) ---- Probably they applied for a wild Card --- *
Korea (7th) ---- Probably they applied for a wild Card --- *

In Fiba Africa
Cameroon (4th) --- **
Nigeria (5th) --- **
Central Africa (6th) Probably they applied for a wild Card --- *

Now give me your opinion what is fair and what is real .. We all know politics is very strong here and it s more hard to get the wild card than qualifying to the world championship

Lithuanian bball federation president Garastas said that our position is that Lithuania won't pay a single cent for a wildcard. Also he stated that it was unofficialy said by FIBA that they'll want money for that.

P.S. bare in mind that Garastas is old and sometimes doesn't understand what he's talking about

I like Lithuanian play.. They had bad luck and bad organizing last euro qualif. tournament..
Lithuania deserves to play among the world champions teams in Turkey 2010..
But It' s chocking to hear that FIBA wants money for the Wild Card..
Therefore Basketball is a trading enterprise... goodbye BB
Therefore in thiscase only the following teams are going to get it:
UK, GERMANY, ITALY & QATAR ... :)

money??

money??

i don't think wild cards applicants are paying money to get it, i mean this is immoral and unfair.

wild cards should be given to the best well deserved applicants, IMHO they r:

1-Lithuenia

2-Russia

3-Germany

4-Lebanon

p.s:i nominated lebanon over D R not because i'm lebanese no, it's because hitorically and logically we desrerve it more then D R although we all know that D R LATELY became way stronger then lebanon, cheerz.

finishing 5th in Fiba Americas >>>>>>>>> finishing 4th in Fiba Asia.

6th in fiba americas USA was not there and they would have won it

6 teams from americas and 3 from asia
5 teams from americas and 4 from asia

i think the 2nd makes more sense

The fear is not coming from what FIBA requests money or not.. The fear comes from some of FIBA committee board members allow himself taking a bribe or some pocket money behind the media .... Then Good-bye FIBA.. and VIVA Basketball..

hey all

hey all

This is my first post here, cause I thought I'd put in my two cents.

I think the Dominican Republic should get it over Lebanon. Basically, it comes down to two factors

Impact on the court:

FIBA recently mentioned how they wanted a team that will produce an impact at the tournament, and you can bet that with the talent we have (Horford, Villanueva, Garcia + Sosa, under the management of Puerto Rican Julio Toro), we will LIKELY have a greater impact than Lebanon. We qualified from a much stronger zone and put up good fights against Argentina, Brazil, and Puerto Rico, who no one can deny are damn good teams. Remember that the Americas tournament was the first time that our NBA players played together, and poor management meant that they practiced together very little beforehand. That, and we also did not have a PG. I don't say this to make excuses, I say it to show that the problems that we had in the Americas tournament will definitely be corrected by the time we get to Turkey. Taking into account the changes that will come should we get a wild card and given the extra time to prepare, the Dominican Republic would compete with any team (not necessarily beat them, but not get blown away 94-54).

Potential for development:

People keep bringing up our failure to qualify since 1978. Well, to tell you the truth, that qualification itself was probably a fluke too. Basketball has only recently started to become popular in this country (though it will never beat our first love, baseball). I'm talking like the last ten years. (We have failed to qualify partly because we are in a very strong zone, second only to Europe.)

That is why this wild card is so important: basketball has a legit shot at establishing itself as the second sport of the Dominican Republic, which would help the global mission of developing the sport. If we get to Turkey, you can bet that Dominicans that have never even watched pro-basketball will follow the team and all its games, and many will become basketball fans afterward. This will be ESPECIALLY true if we do well in the tournament, which, given what is stated above, is a very real possibility. If more Dominicans started playing basketball now, it could be the beginning of a more steady stream of talent production on our part. With a population of over 10 million, in the next 20 years we could overtake Uruguay (3 million) and, with all respect to our close brothers, Puerto Rico (4 million) in basketball talent production.

FIBA is more focused on the future than it is the past and it knows that it would miss this crucial WINDOW to possibly produce another basketball country in the Americas. I'm not saying that if we don't get it our entire basketball infrastructure will collapse, but rather that Turkey 2010 is our best shot ever at this.

If Lebanon fails to get the wild card, basketball will not suffer much in Lebanon. You guys are great fans, and there will always be more tournaments. If the DR doesn't get it, an opportunity will have been missed. Remember that the Dominican market is not only bigger than Lebanon (larger GDP, population), it is also has much more potential in basketball growth, basically because Lebanon is already crazy about their basketball :D

Know that I say this trying to be as impartial as possible. If it were up to me, Lebanon would also get a wild card (I am 1/4 Lebanese, they were one of my teams in the past WBCs ;) ). But not over the Dominican Republic.

Let me know what you think.
