Next season in the Korean Basketball League, the board and team representatives have agreed to place a quota on foreign players; thereby reducing foreign players or "imports" to one per team.

"I believe this will develop our local players more and hopefully better performance on the International competition" a KBL official told The Korea Times.

Take that Mobis Phoebus and KT&G Kites not so imposing now eh?:p

Now my LG Sakers faces the dilemma of who to retain. Chris Alexander or Greg Stevenson. 100% sure Warren Reginald will not be back.

Since the KBL has an Import Quota, only a small handful will be able to actually play for the said teams on the KBL. But the quota does not bear any restriction of signing another Import for reserve due to injuries, thus be relegated to the Injury Replacements.

Since Chris Alexander could be playing in Spain next season, LG Sakers will need another productive center as Baek In-Seon will not be sufficient to carry us even on the 1st round.

Possible candidates next season are:

Samaki Walker former Los Angeles Lakers
Ruben Boumtjie former Cleveland Cavaliers
Ryan Humphries former Roanoke Dazzle (NBDL)
Tony Battie former Orlando Magic (This is certainly wishful thinking as he never showed up in Las Vegas but is fast-tracking his application through mediums such as email and courier.

Seven players have applied to enter the second Korean Basketball League (KBL) ethnic Korean draft, the league announced Wednesday.

The seven players will take part in a tryout and draft on Feb. 2 and 3. Teams will be looking for the next Moon Tae-young of the LG Sakers or Jun Tae-poong of the KCC Egis, who were taken in the first draft a year ago and have made an impact on the league this season.

Among the most highly-touted of the seven is 2.04-meter Joseph Fontenot, who was an all-state player in Maryland when he was in high school and went on to play at Connors State College, but has yet to play professionally.

“I want to be evaluated based on my abilities, not my experience,” the 21-year-old said

The Ulsan Mobis, Dongbu Promy, ET Land Elephants, SK Knights and Daegu Orions didn’t select a player in last year’s ethnic Korean draft and will be eligible to make a pick this year.

All have expressed interest in Fontenot, however, many believe Jarod Stevenson, the older brother of Moon Tae-young, is the best player available.

Stevenson wasn’t at the orientation session in Seoul Wednesday because he’s playing in Serbia’s top basketball league this year. Stevenson is bigger than his brother and he’s said to be more advanced as well; Moon is currently leading the KBL in points per game.

Stevenson has played in Russia, Spain and Greece but the knock on him is his age; he’ll be 36 when he plays his first game in the KBL.

Among the others who have entered the draft, Anthony Galloway is back again after not being selected last season. Park Wayne Cleveland, Andrew Estebo, Ronald Tinsley and Mark Warrington round out the list.

The weird part is, Stevenson could be the OLDEST ever to be picked on the draft. SK Knights need ceiling and they have a good chance to nabbing him.

According to my LG Sakers insider and good friend, James Edrupt, Chris Alexander will be returning next season as LG signed him to a 1 year contract.:) But we lost Lee Hyeon Min due to round of duties and enlistment to the army. This is bad, we have no PG at the moment.:(

Ulsan Mobis signs All-Star Guard Yang Dong-Geun

DongBu Promy signs former KBL League MVP (07-08) Kim Joo-Sung

Yang Dong-Geun is currently training with the South Korean NT for the Asian Games.

Tony Battie had pulled out of negotiations with any KBL team as he was offered a contract by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Omar Samhan should also be removed from the list since he has already signed a contract with Zalgiris Kaunas (Lithuania) last week.

The Daegu Orions have signed Center Otis George formerly of the NBDL Tulsa 66ers and Umana Reyer Venezia.

George will provide the rebounding on which the Orions badly needed. They finished at the bottom of the league with the record of 15-40. Last season, Herbert Hill and Jung-Hoon as well as Lee Dong-Jun played Center, as they were all small forwards at natural.

Aris just signed Bryant Dunston,MVP of the last KBL and champion.Guys anybody have seen this player? What can you tell about him??Thanks in advanve:)

Bryant Dunston has a nice offensive game but his defensive capabilities are what stood out. Lead the KBL in shot-blocks at one point. He can guard fast forwards and able to stay on the perimeter.

Thank you very much my friend! At least you are saying what I wanted to hear:p.What do you think is he able to play on better level? What do you think of the Korean League competition level, compared for example with CBA,CBA has for sure better names for imports,so is KBL close to this level, especially concerning tall guys?

It will be a big challenge for Bryant Dunston to be playing for Aris and against better opposition. I believe that the CBA's level of play is better overall than that of the KBL as ex-CBA imports who did not play well on the CBA are considered star players on the KBL on which the KBL's level of play have stagnated due to over reliance on imports.

I believe the 1-import rule won't take effect until 2011-2012. For the time being it's still 2 imports, playing a total of 1 import's minutes. Half-Koreans are not counted as imports.

Thanks for the info, I checked with the local media and the decision on the Import Quota was not yet ratified due to administrative procedures. But it should take effect next season.

Former University of Connecticut standout Gavin Edwards has signed a 1 year contract with Anyang KT&G Kites. Gavin Edwards played for the Phoenix Suns Summer League Squad on the NBA Summer League.

Rod Nealy was not been drafted, this guy almost quit his duty with rain or shine in the quaterfinals but he played with sub par performance because his mind was in this kbl draft

There are talks between the KBL and JBL about:

All-Star Game pitting KBL All-Stars vs. JBL All-Stars. It was in 2007 where the KBL and CBA held an All-Star Game exhibition where KBL All-stars vs. CBA All-Stars. The game was held in China.

Also, there could be another South-Korea / Japan Championship Series just like in 2008.

how about kbl pitting against their daddy Pba all stars:D:D bothnin korea and Manila

positives

It will open the yes of Filipino audience bout Koran basketball
theres basketball outside phils and nba and for some euroleague for filipino fans

Sounds great. :)

I hope someday that the KBL and PBA will hold a championship series game between KBL champion vs PBA champion (Preferably Fiesta Cup Champs) or KBL All-Stars vs. PBA All-Stars.

With the influx of South Koreans on the Philippines as well as warm diplomatic ties by both government, I think it will happen someday.

The last time a KBL Team was on Manila I think was in 2008 where the Samsung SK Knights lead by former PBA Import Marquin Chandler had a series of exhibition games against PBA Teams.

At the moment, the KBL has strong ties with CBA and JBL. With the recent Korean Import Draft on Las Vegas and the Korean Development Basketball camp held recently in Seoul, the KBL and NBA have forged stronger ties.

1. KBL-CBA All-star games was held for many years not just in 2007 (too lazy to check). In every of these years there were 2 games, one in China and one in Korea.

2. The Korea/Japan Championship series was also held for many years not just in 2008 (too lazy to check). It was a preseason series between the previous KBL champion and the BJ-league (not JBL) champion. In every year there were also 2 games, one in Korea and one in Japan.
