NEW YORK (AP)—Kobe Bryant broke the current Madison Square Garden record with 61 points, and the Los Angeles Lakers looked plenty potent without Andrew Bynum in a 126-117 victory over the New York Knicks on Monday night.

Bryant teased and pleased a sold-out crowd that took turns booing him and saluting him during an electrifying performance with chants of “MVP! MVP!” He passed Michael Jordan’s opponent record of 55 points at the present building, known as “Garden IV,” when he hit three free throws with 3:56 remaining, then bettered Bernard King’s mark of 60, set on Christmas Day 1984, with two more foul shots with 2:33 to play.

Bryant, who also finished with the highest-scoring game in the NBA this season, left to a loud ovation after the 24th 50-point game of his career.

Aside from his awesome 81 point performance against Toronto, had Kobe ever scored 60+ before?

Including tonight, Kobe has scored 60 points or more 5 times. Bryant's MSG-record setting 61 point total against the Knicks is his fourth-highest total.

Of course there is his 81 point total against Toronto in January 2006, then he scored 65 points in an overtime victory vs. the Blazers in March 2007, during his 4-game streak of 50+ points games. Bryant scored 62 points vs Dallas in December outscoring the Macs through 3 quarters of play (he sat the entire fourth).

Then he had his 61 points against New York tonight. His fifth highest scoring game was 60, again during his 4-game 50+ point streak vs Memphis in March 2007.

So Kobe's three-highest point totals are as follows:

  • 81 points vs Toronto (Jan 2006)
  • 65 points vs Blazers in OT (March 2007)
  • 62 points vs Mavericks (Dec 2005)
  • 61 points vs. Knicks (January 2009)
  • 60 points vs. Memphis (March 2007)
Food for thought -- and I am not insinuating tha Kobe is better than MJ, but because I know people want to know and wonder - Michael Jordan scored 60+ points only 4 times in his career (during the regular season).

that 60 against memphis was during that stretch that he had with 4 games of 50 or more, it was a road game too.

before the 62 against dallas, his former career high was 56 and it was against memphis too i think.

kobe is just unbelievable, when he retires (which i hope would be a long time from now) the game will lose 1 of the greatest to catch a basketball ever

What an awesome performance by the "Black Mamba".
MSG fans are really lucky to witness such great performances on their home court (even though they pay the highest ticket prices in the NBA but it's definitely worth it :) ).

He's made his shots, but he didn't do nearly anything else, lol.

Well, his 20/20 FT shooting are great! His best FT streak is around 60-70 straight already.

And Gasol provided great support.

You're a Boston fan, Spider? That'll be a good game. I look forward to the Finals repeat!

im a boston fan but the real final is between the crabaliers and celtics, then i think the spurs will play in the finals with boston

crabaliers

It's Cleveland Craboliers/Cleveland Crabs and King Crab.

And you make me nervous guys, it is just an NBA regular season game. Meaningless games, weak defense etc...

Kobe scored 60+, and it was against NY Knicks, oh wow....:o
LeCrab scored 50+ points, 10+ rebs and 10+ assists last night...

Conclusion? It is not something special to drop 50-60-70 points vs Knicks.
