Well, if he will not be selected there is always European leagues who will surely get interested.

"Anton Ponomarev for NBA Draft 2009

May 28, 2009 (by Eurobasket News)

A loud piece of news came from the country as Anton Ponomarev (209-C-88, agency: Court Side) have applied as 'early entry' player to be eligible for selection in the 2009 NBA draft. The player from Astana Tigers (Kazakhstan) can make a history for the country.

Anton Ponomarev started his career in 2003-2004 for Astana-Tigers (D1). He remained in the team up to the last season and became the leader of the squad. For his Awards/Achievements it is a must to mention Kazakhstan U18 National Team, Kazakhstan U20 National Team in 2004. He was in the All-Kazakhstan League 1st Team in 2005 and became Kazakhstan League Champion in 2005-2009. In 2006 Anton participated in William Jones Cup Tournament and Asian Games in Doha as well as Basketball Without Borders Asia Camp. Last year he became Kazakhstan Open Cup Winner and Kazakhstan League Regular Season Runner-Up.

This season Astana Tigers together with Anton Ponomarev became the winner of the Regular Season in Kazakhstan. The team finished with 14-2 record that was the best in the standings of the league. In the last round of the Regular Season BK Almaty handed the leader Astana Tigers 84:82 loss. It was a very interesting game as both teams tried hard to finish the last game. BK Almaty pushed the tempo in the end of the game and grabbed the win. Anton Ponomarev received MVP award of the Regular Season".

I have seen Ponomarev at Reebok Eurocamp in Treviso. He did pretty well, but it was also obvious that he needs to take step further in his career and move from Kazakhstan.

He has excellent shooting ability to go along with nice size and deceptive athleticism, but he is way too soft and fragile defensively. He didn`t look like he was well educated in terms of basketball knowledge and coaches were talking with him the most of any players trying to correct mistakes.

There were also rumours that he is not born in 1988, but in 1986. If he works hard on his body, inside game and defense i can see him develop into a servicable NBA player down the road, but succesfull European career is more likely. He has a shot to be selected in 2nd round of NBA draft next year when he is automatically eligbile.

bring on japeth vs ponomarev on FIBA ASIA!!!

I don't know about the result of that match-up (If ever) but I am intrigued as well.

Anton Ponomarev just withdrawed from the NBA draft several days ago.
And today he sighed with HYERES-TOULON VAR BASKET basketball team of France ProA.He will play for that team for 4years

it's a wise move for Ponomarev...he'll just end up on the far side on the bench if ever he's drafted in the NBA...especially in a country where his native Kazakhstan is made just a laughing stock in the Hollywood movie "Borat" :(

On the flipside, the Borat-hype could work for him! Imagine ESPN article with Borat-filled jokes when he scores his career-high!

All i Know is that this guy is awesome period! An NBA Caliber if you ask me. And he is fast for a 6'10 guy.

This was the article that was posted on Asia-Basket concerning Ponomarev.

"Top prospect Anton Ponomarev moves to France (by Eurobasket News)

On of the top prospects in Kazahkstan, Anton Ponomarev (209-C-88, agency: Court Side) will continue basketball career abroad. The 210cm big guy inked 4-year deal with the French club Hyeres-Toulon. It seems his talent and good performance in Kazahstan were not unnoticed by the European scouts.
Anton Ponomarev started basketball career in BK Astana Tigers. With the Tigers he won 5 championship titles in Kazakhstan. This year they also won Kazakhstan Open Cup Winner. Last month he participated at the Reebok Eurocamp in Treviso, where she showed decent performance.
With Kazakhstan Anton Ponomarev played on World University Championships 2007 in Bangkok. Before that he was a member of U18 and U20 National Team. That is no all. Ponomarev also was a member of Senior NT from 2005 to 2008, what was a great award for the player. In 2005 he was named 'All-Kazakhstan League 1st Team'. Next year he participated at the prestigious Basketball Without Borders Asia Camp.
Hyeres-Toulon ended last season as No.11 in Pro A with 13-17 record. They will compete at the same stage in the next one also".

We'll see that with Hyeres. Despite being the best championship in Europe, French championship is quite athletic. Ponomarev will have to defend on guys ways smaller than himself. In a quick game.
Still, I wonder why he went to Hyeres. The best reason for me is Vinokourov. But, appart of this? He should play at least 15 minutes there.

In Kazakhstan with Astana Tigers.

The longer he stays in Kazakhstan the worse it is for his basketball career. He's not that young anymore and if he is to ever have a chance playing abroad now is the time.
I remember he was still studying but I believe he has completed his university.

Anyways it would be really sad for such a talent to go to waste if he decides to continue playing in Kazakhstan.

I remember him trying out in the 2009 NBA Draft and I went news black-out on him. What happened?

Did he withdrew on his application or... went undrafted?
