After spending a week in Gran Canaria and then watching closely the Lithuania - New Zealand and Turkey - Australia games I came to realise that FIBA wants to see a team from each corner of the world in the top 4 and have rigged games by having referees favour the teams in each of the four (five) corners of the world.

The teams left:

-Oceania/Asia: None
-Europe: Slovenia, Turkey, Lithuania, Serbia, Spain, France
-North America: USA
-Africa: None
-South America: Brazil

The Turkey - Australia game was enough proof for me to see this as the referees were totally against Turkey and they had to pull out a miracle to win this of which they did.

My prediction is the Brazil - Serbia will be heavily lopsided from the referees side towards Brazil to prevent semi finals with 3 European teams competing.

Disprove!

Same with the philippines vs croatia. The referees sided with croatia most of the time.

Yeah, I watched abit of the new zealand and lithuania game. Seems like the refs are siding lithuania more. Fotu gets the rebound and then Valaciunias? kind of flop and then it is awarded to lithuania. I think Fotu also got called for the offensive. these calls can go both ways most of the time. Also anytime a lithuanian went up for a layup and flail their arms and fall on the floor, the refs awarded the easy two. Some of them should be correct calls (with contact), but I seriously doubt all are legit calls, some of them looked like they were barely touched if not at all. Lithuanians played more aggressively though.

Anyway you are lithuanian so you should be happy with the result.

Actually I saw it the other way a bit and every time we played a non-european team the calls were always disputable.

I believe FIBA is money hungry and wants to have global final 4 as opposed to 3 European teams in final 4 so they get more coverage of the great game and make more from tv deals.

I prefer to see the best 4 teams regardless and non-rigged referees!

Is FIBA rigged?

Just look the draw. Its all set up for Spain to meet USA in finals, how is that not rigged?

The draw was a bit rigged because it was/is clearly set up for Spain and uSA finals, but as far as refereeing goes I dont think it was rigged - it was just very bad level of officiating in general. FIBA as well as FIFA screwes it up with their policy during world cup to take as many refs from various countries as possible, half pof them do not have the skills needed and as a result they end up ruining the games. When FIFA/FIBA will start selecting refs based on their skill instead of nationality then we might see an improvement. Until then, all you can do is pray that incabale refs will make mistakes in your favor rather than opponents.

The draw was clearly set up for USA/Spain but at the same time it still falls on those teams to actually win it on the court.

As for this conspiracy to make non european countries look better it fails the eye test. I'm with bballcrazy in that if the refs favored anyone it was Lithuania. Even then they didn't favor them by much. This all seems like justification to explain why Lithuania looked awful against a mediocre side.

It's too hard to tell if refs are unfair when you are not in the arena and watch the TV. I thought many dubious calls were given favoring Australia vs Turkey yesterday but I will just believe those were just bad judgements.

Today FIBA announced they have launched a disciplinary procedure against Australia for misconduct (i.e. losing vs Angola). As much as I despise tanking, I find this investigation by FIBA surpassingly stupid, and I hope Australia will counterattack and take FIBA to courts for "unfair competititon", both because Turkey should not have been there (wild cards are unsportsmanlike) and because the competition format is biased.

Besides the fact that it's ugly to know that all teams don't have equal opportunities to win the gold and that mighty teams are favored, it's against common sense that QFs are repeat games from the pool stage....

both because Turkey should not have been there (wild cards are unsportsmanlike) and because the competition format is biased.

and Australia should be there why? because only 2 teams compete in Fiba Ocenia Championship, lol.

this...
if Australia can't beat the lowly wildcard side, which is not "worthy" of competing in the World Cup, then what does it say about them as a team LMAO?

The countries given wildcards are Brazil, Finland, Greece and Turkey.
Apart from Finland ( Even Finland showed great character in this tournament ) all deserved participants, results show that.
For Turkey case, giving ex world cup finalist a wildcard looks rational and logical to me.

Of course discussing wildcard institution is an other matter, might be better to remove it altogether though.

FIBA investigates australian defeat vs angola. good, now they should look at some of tanking from spain last years

I don't understand this investigation into Australia supposedly tanking. Is there a rule that would allow FIBA to take any action even if they did conclude Australia had tanked?

I don't like tanking either but as long as the format incentivizes it more strongly than it dis-incentivizes it, it's going to continue.

True!!! Fiji and Cook islands should have the right to participate in a WC. And Tahití or Papua New Guinea, too.

I think you don't get the idea of OP. If they favored Croatia then it means that you say that OP is wrong (as according to OP's statement they should have stated with Philipinnes in order to get teams from corners of the world and not Europeans).

I personally do not like the idea of brackets.
Home teams (including TR) always create themselves an easier path to the USA game (usually final)

After a certaşn stage, the qualifying teams can just be "drawn" together.
This is the only way to prevent "setting up" of routes.

Anybody saw that ilegal basket that was counted good at Spain vs Senegal game  , that to me is the most scandalous situation at this world cup so far, in the sea of the bad things that already happened at this tournamet , FIBA sent a clear message to the outsiders, don"t even try to bother favorites :)

I agree. I think that basket was the turning point in the game.

But to answer the question, yes I think fiba is rigged. It should be dismantled and international basketball should cease to exist. Stupid questions deserve stupid answers.

I wonder if fiba was rigged in the 1995 eurobasket final or how about the 2002 world championships final. Just wondering .
