Hasheem Thabeet is a 7-3 center from Tanzania, and is a big reason why the UConn Huskies have been ranked #1 throughout much of the 2008-09 season.

Thabeet is setting blocked shot records left and right, and is currently only a few blocks away from usurping Patrick Ewing as the Big East's all-time leader. Thabeet has already passed up past Big East defensive pivots in Alonzo Mourning, Dikmebe Mutombo, Emeka Okafor, and Etan Thomas.

Thabeet was named to the Big East first team, just won Big East's defensive player of the year, as well as sharing conference Player of the Year honors with his nemesis in the paint Dejuan Blair of PITT, whom has defeated UConn twice this season. Hasheem Thabeet... reminds me of a Dikembe Mutombo with the explosiveness of Tyrus Thomas.

I think he's going to be a very good player, maybe better than a Dikembe Mutombo. Heres some more info I ran across today, some interesting tidbits about the big man from Tanzania...

As such, the mythmakers couldn’t have asked for more than Connecticut’s Thabeet. Five years ago, he began e-mailing colleges from an Internet cafe in Dar es Salaam, a Tanzanian coastal city, with the audacious notion that he might one day be exactly where he wound up...

When his e-mail messages to colleges went largely unanswered, Thabeet almost forgot about basketball, a game he didn’t play until he was 15. But he was talked into traveling with his high school team to a tournament in Nairobi, Kenya, and there he caught the eye of a French scout named Oliver Noah, who lived in Los Angeles.

Hasheem Thabeet was indeed a dominant force on the basketball court during his time at the University of Connecticut. As a 7-foot-3 center from Tanzania, he quickly established himself as one of the most feared defenders in the nation. His shot-blocking prowess was particularly impressive, and he led the country with an average of 4.5 blocks per game during his junior season.

Табіт буде одним із найкращих гравців на драфті НБА 2009 року. Його порівнюють з такими легендами НБА, як Шакіл О'Ніл і Дікембе Мутомбо. Табет має потенціал стати домінуючою силою в НБА на довгі роки
