'Grizzlies discriminating against Haddadi'

Memphis Grizzlies' Iranian center Hamed Haddadi has been deprived of many of the privileges enjoyed by his teammates due to his nationality, his family says.

“During our recent conversations, Hamed has more than once complained that he is deprived of privileges because he is Iranian,” Haddadi's brother Ahmad said on Saturday.

Ahmad Haddadi told IRIB that his brother “has to pay for anything within the club,” which is otherwise free for other members of his team.

“For instance, the Spanish player does not pay a dime for his purchases,” he said in an apparent referral to Marc Gasol.

“Even with his three-year contract with the Memphis [Grizzlies] he hasn't been allowed to play for the team as much as he did last year,” the brother of the 7-foot-2 player said.

Despite having received offers from European teams such as the Spanish League club FC Barcelona, Hamed Haddadi is likely to extend his contract with the Memphis Grizzlies until 2013.

The first Iranian NBA player joined Memphis in 2008. He was signed after becoming the only player to average a double-double (16.6 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.6 blocks) in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Haddadi also helped Iran clinch its first Olympic basketball berth since 1948 after he poured in 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against Lebanon in the 2007 FIBA Asian Championship in Japan.

Well US companies can't do strict deals with Hamed because of his Iranian nationality. At least that is my understanding. I wonder if he has applied for US citizenship that could make his time there much easier. Hamed should just leave memphis.

I never trust on english-language Iranian media ! their translations are often wrong, most of the times on purpose ! especially Press TV !! it's a lying machine !

I have no idea about this news but one thing is for sure that Hamed has no future in Memphis !

I am literate in farsi and I am sure I have not translated anything incorrectly. I will say this Iranian to english translators have to be some of the worst in the business.

What exactly is the discrimination? For instance, "he has to pay for anything within the club"? Like jerseys? That's messed up. Restaurants, so? He can afford his own meals. So again, pay for what?

“For instance, the Spanish player does not pay a dime for his purchases." Really? What purchases? A car, house? That doesn't sound right.

“Even with his three-year contract with the Memphis [Grizzlies] he hasn't been allowed to play for the team as much as he did last year." Is that discrimination or is he just not playing that good (or someone else playing better)? I haven't really paid attention so I don't know if Hamed is playing good but the coach won't play him. Plus, even if it is true, that doesn't mean it's because he's Iranian. He could either not fit the coaches style (or coach being stubborn) or the coach doesn't personally like him (which is of course unprofessional).

Seems like much to do about nothing, unless someone has more info or a different take on it. Not to mention this is all from his brother and others have already questioned the source.

He should have left Grizzlies a year ago in my opinion,
my feeling is that he doesn't want to leave because he likes his life/lifestyle in Memphis and he probably feels that he has already hit the ceiling of his aspirations.

Judging from your avatar...nevermind I won't go there, but I will explain to you what Haddadi and most forum members are trying to say in "english".

When you are with your club team they usually pay for hotel rooms, food, shoes, and jerseys. I doubt Haddadi can get that treatment since he is an Iranian national and American's technically are not supposed to do business with Iranian nationals.

Lionel Hollins is an idiot and is not fit to coach little league. Then again memphis management is not exactly any better.

I understand Haddadi's complaints, but he should either leave the NBA and head to spain or leave the crappy team that is the memphis grizzlies. I honestly could see him being a good back up center or in about 4 years a great center. I honestly don't think he will have trouble landing another NBA team.

i definetly think that haddadi could very well make it as a back up center in other NBA teams, i mean, the guy's not bad, we've all seen the numbers he posted in the 2008 olympics and the last WC, he's good and i definetly think he deserves the chance to play at least some 10 mins/game, staying like that in memphis, and with the way i see things are goin, i dont think his level will evolve at all, it might even regress, and his clock is ticking, he's not getting any younger, so i think it'd be a wise move if he'd think twice about continuing his memphis story:p, he could be doing a huge career mistake.
i really hope the best for the big guy. best of luck for him:)

No, please do. I'd like to see how you think these two go together.

Well, I understand that the teams pay for hotels, etc..., but if American's "technically" can't do business with him, then why is he with a U.S. team? Seems hypocritical if he can play for the team but has to pay for the things that players get for free (including Spaniards!).

I really don't see him as anything more then a solid backup, of course I wish the best for him.

Haddadi recorded 2pts and 1 rebound in 5mins of play against Utah last night.

Haddadi had his first career double-double with 10 pts, 10 rebs in 20 minutes.

I guess the Grizzlies have no choice but to use him now with Thabeet gone. He showed tonight that he can definitely play, he just needs the time.

big game for Haddadi. He waited for a long time and it's his chance to step up in the NBA.

Nice game by Haddadi :) (Added 2 blocks as well in addition to his double-double)

Seems like Coach Hollins will be giving him more minutes to play till the end of the season and I sure hope Haddadi takes full advantage of this and shows that he deserves a place in the NBA...

Haddadi, who had been buried on the bench behind Gasol and Hasheem Thabeet, also recorded a career-high 21 minutes after Thabeet went to Houston in the Battier deal.

"He's going to get minutes," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "He has got to play."

Mar 22 C Hamed Haddadi often doesn't see action for several games in a row because of matchups with individual teams. But when he does get in games, especially early, he's often effective -- as he was on Monday against the Jazz. When Marc Gasol went to the bench early in the first quarter with two fouls, Haddadi came in and had 8 points and 4 rebounds in the period. He added another basket to finish with 10 points. "The fans love Hamed," coach Lionel Hollins said. "He could go out there and fall down and they'd cheer for him. He's a cult figure here in Memphis But our players loved him and he brought his size to the game tonight when Marc got two fouls. They (the Jazz) went to a zone, but they couldn't match Hamed's size around the basket. He made them come out of the zone."

source from Yahoo Sports

hope they will let him play more minutes.

Hamed Haddadi with 5 points (5/6 FT) 2 rebounds (offensive), and 1 block in 5:39 minutes of play against the Thunder last night.

These are his first points in the playoffs...

Hamed Haddadi with 4 points (2/4 FG) 1 rebound, and 2 blocks in 7:27 minutes of play against the Thunder in game 5 last night.

Good to see him getting some play-off time and being effective in limited minutes. It looks like Gasol/Randolph weren't playing great last night, so coach Hollins wanted to see if Haddadi could give them a few good minutes.
