man what a game ! tanjevic & hedo was about to cost us the game, otherwise it would be a much more easier win for turkey.
well i want to start with tanjevic because i am more mad at him; his coaching is getting worser as the tournament proceeded, at least in terms of rotation. at the first round, everything seemed very promising. he was using all of the squad with great confidence( except the injuries of course), indicating that he is willing to get everyone feel involved in the race and keep his big guns fresh until the very end. but with the start of second round, he just get back to a 8 man rotation instead of 11.
Okay we must ask; what is the goal for Turkey in this tournament ? to beat flashy teams like spain & serbia or get a medal ? for me, if the goal is medal (as it should be ) both of spain & serbia games were expendable. instead of focusing on 6 of 6 wins, we should have focused on keeping the team together and keeping them rested. now our teams is neither together nor rested.
i dont believe its together because, tanjevic made it clear that he prefers an 1/16 shooting, absent minded, tired as hell hidayet over a very energetic, very productive (3 rebounds + 2 assists + 2 steals in just 10 minutes !!)2/3 shooting Sinan. If a coach believes that this Sinan could not make a better impact on the team than Hedo in the second half ( as he did not played ever again after this 10 mins) that coach cant expect to get any respect from the player. this is the very same thing that goes between tanjevic and other very talented turkish players like, mehmet okur, erkan erdogan and kaya peker. which, time to time we miss desperately. tanjevic needs to give minutes to people who deserves them instead of babysitting his favorites. all these guys came from a 2-month camping period. If you wont use them why did you cost them a nice summer anyway ?? this attitude of the coach, i believe, do harm to the relations of players as well. think about it for a moment, you give your everything on defense to steal the ball and on the other end someone just jacks up a three or a fadeaway carelessly, without even giving the set play a chance (and coach allows this guy to do it 15 times)
hedo; oh boy, oh boy.. i watched him since he was 19, and did not saw a single game he screwed up so badly (actually i never saw a career player screw up that bad before). yes i saw his bad games, but i know what they are like; despite his haters claimed here, they are not that much and definetely were not that bad either. shooting; i am not sure but among the players taking 15+ shots, his low percentage can be the world record in professional basketball (at least at international level). everyone is making excuse for his sore knee, but then again, who told him to throw the ball to the basket nearly everytime he gets the possesion ? i mean, it may hurt very bad, and its admirable that he doesnt want to leave "his team"(!) alone. but whats up with all those jordanesque fade aways and threes over double teams ? he can barely make %40 of these shots in his best day and taking them while suffering from injury ?? man, this guy sometimes really looses it.
play-making; ok shots are not falling, but isnt one of his games strength depends on his ability of playmaking ?? i mean he put 13 assists against celtics in nba playoffs but cant buy him 3 assists in 39 minutes against Serbia ?? ok, also forget about dishing assists. how many times he drove to the basket to unbalance serbian defence or draw some fauls ? instead of that, on many possessions he grabbed the ball, stood there for 15 seconds like he had a brain freeze, and then shot over a double team. how is this helping "your team" big man ??
i see that people tend to emphise his defensive contrubitions of 4 steals and 5 rebounds. well, as i said, sinan showed the capacity that he could do a lot more than that in just a 10 mins span. besides, dont just look at the figures. on many possessions hidayet did not return to defense after he took a bad shot, simply because he was upset with his shot or because he did not get the call, not because he was injured. that attitude cost Turkey at least couple of unguarded 3's. now talk about good defense effort !
i also see that people tend to value hedo's presence on court on mental level. him being on the court, team feels more confident etc. Well, this is the biggest shittiest piece of crap i have ever heard. This can be a mental leverage for the supporters who lack knowledge of basketball basics and often overvalues the capacity of star players/teams either for or against. dont afraid to say that seeing hedo on court just makes you relax, its no shame. but thinking that his presence help teammates not to afraid from the opposing team is simply lame, a huge disrespect to the other members of the NT. they are the best basketball players of a 70 million nation, not 7-year old babygirls who need someone to hold their hand while crossing the street for gods sake! Enough said !!!
overall, turkey gets the win, but i am afraid at a very unnecessarily high cost. Tanjevic clearly ruining the balance in the rotation, thus ruining the team chemistry so far in this round. plus, Hedo get to play 38 minutes with a knee injury, now will he be able to play at full capacity ever again in this tournament ? ersan, our biggest hope for winning this tournament get to play 39 minutes. Kerem, our overachieving guard so far, put so much effort that he injured his back during the game. and we have not played a single elimination game yet, God help us.
Serbia showed what a great basketball country they are. they will have a great NT in couple of years. And -maybe not 2010 but afterwards- they will be among the strongest favorites of many competitions to come. I wish i could tell the same for Turkey
