Odom played 30 minutes, Love played 5... What is Coach K thinking?

I didn't see the game, but it sounds like a helluva finish (thank god for DVR technology). This US Team really hasn't put together a complete 40 min. game since the start of training camp. For any US supporter that should be of major concern.

They haven't figured out when to push the attack and when to back off. Pushing the tempo works if they had the proper ballhandling and decision making skills, but in almost every game they've had as many turnovers as the opposition (especially unforced ones), negating any advantage in their favor. I had a sinking feeling that Brazil was going to test the US and it proved to be true. Since the NBA players have represented the US, Brazil has pressed the US towards defeat more often then any other country. Fortunately for us they haven't got over hill yet.

US CLOSE CALLS WITH BRAZIL

1999 Tournament of the Americas--San Juan, PUR
USA 90, Brazil 73 (USA led by 2 points at half-time before pulling away in the second half)

2001 Goodwill Games--Brisbane, AUS
USA 106, Brazil 98 (the game was tied 90-90 at the end of regulation. USA then outscored them 16-8 in OT to claim victory)

2006 China Basketball Challenge--Guangzhou, CHN
USA 90, Brazil 86 (contested throughout, freethrows at the end saved the US from certain defeat)

2010 FIBA World Championships--Istanbul, TUR
USA 70, Brazil 68

board didn't exploded when we counted more than 15 non called traveling violations in USA favor past 3 games

I was watching Kevin Durants and Andre Iguodalas game 2nd time time in life. And you call them NBA superstars? Give ball to Gustas and let him shoot 50 times per game and we will see who is the star. The only disappointment is that Brazil played terribly in 4Q and didn't use many good opportunities. At least I am glad and not afraid that these so called super mega superstars are playing best of all teams. USA is playing very bad game but somehow so far all opponents are playing even more terrible game.

Those supposite missed traveling calls couldn't be any worst then the constently missed moving screens and charge-induced defensive flopping Europeans engage in. The officiating has been consistently awful for all teams, so please spare me the "US gets away with traveling" garbage.

Same old story.

Still beating a dead horse again! :D

im laughing about lamar odom because he plays center. he is true legitimate forward. he was always hurt in inside and he was collided by brazilian centers. that was funny :D . a reason why that usa team is center-less

That he can't guard anyone? That said I don't understand the USA Basketball obsession with Odom. Just like at Duke, when the going gets tough, K stops using his bench. I don't think we made a single sub in the fourth quarter until Love came in for the final free throw, even though we were playing terribly.

The game wasn't a big surprise as Brazil often gives the US trouble. If Magnano stays with them a few years they may finally play up to their potential.

Fourth quarter was just awful, awful basketball. US looked like Canada out there. Brazil wasn't any better.

Indeed. Honestly some of the worst basketball I've seen on any level: FIBA, NBA, Euroleague, NCAA D1, D2...CBA...whatever. It was truly horrific. The US offense is completely one-dimensional. This team is making the same mistakes the 2002 & 2004 teams made: quick, hurried shoots, ineffective isolation plays, wasted posessions, and mindless turnovers. The only difference (so far) between then and now is that they haven't faced an opponent that's adept enough to take advantage of the multitude of flaws this team has.

Watching Iguadala and Odem play makes me wonder if they've ever played organized basketball in their lives. Rose and Billups have been effective but each have uncharacteristically turned the ball over or made poor decisions at the most inopportune times. They're suddenly getting nothing out of Gay. Granger is a non-factor and is battling for the 12-man award with Gordon and Curry. Chandler gives you rebounds along with quick fouls. Westbrook has had some great moments but he doesn't have the outside game or point guard instincts the other guards have. Love has been solid, but he's undersized on the defensive end and for some inexplicable reason Coach K doesn't see the need to give him more minutes. Durant is the only one carrying his own weight and fulfilling his role...the rest are either serviceable, inconsistent or complete non-factors.

That was a great game with great atmosphere.

Billups made huge plays in crunch time, I was against him being in the team but now I understand why he's there.

Barbosa lost the game for Brazil.

Magnano is a real wizard. He turned the complete mess the brazilian team was into a real team where everyone seems to know his role, which has a good ratio of star and role players, which has self-confidence(!!!!), passes the ball nicely and he taught them systems to make easy first two passes on offense to gain some stability in their systems. I don't rate Hilario as important to the team but Varejao surely is a cornerstone of this team and they will be stronger when he returns. Their problem, of course, is Barbosa who still cannot make good decisions on the court on offense.

Viva brasil!

Viva brasil!

When I saw the score I was amazed and very, very happy as this is definitely great evidence that this game is no longer the "American Game" but rather a game that is played and loved across the world.

I still remember back 9 years ago (2001) in the 2001 Goodwill Games that were hosted in Brisbane, Australia. The USA sent a team LOADED with the NBA's best Under-23s players: Shawn Marion, Jermaine O'Neal, Baron Davis and Co. This team went off an amazing start that some basketball analyst thought they they were better than Team USA of the 2000 Sydney Olympics but ... but ... along came Brazil in the Semi-Finals featuring two 18 year old by name of Nene and Anderson Varejao both were listed as only 6'9" 225 lbs (Nene) and 6'11" 210lbs versus the strength and power of NBA Rising Stars of the Paint: Jermaine O'Neal and Kenyon Martin. The two Brazilian teenagers neutralised the superior post play of Team USA and showed Team USA Coaching Staff led by Flip Saunders that they can take on the NBA's newest and toughest "Big Boyz". The USA almost lost the game but one thing showed that once again just like in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Semi-Finals Basketball Competition, the USA are not invinsible.

Being an Aussie and a strong supporter of international basketball and international basketballers in the NBA, I was hoping that the USA would loose but once again Team USA had that "extra" edge against Brazil but I'm confident to say that the USA's road to the podium ... if they reach it will be a very, very difficult one.

I agree. Magnano is very good. He has a great ability to get teams to play together and use their strengths. Rather than make his own plays, he gives players a variety of plays that are made for their strengths, much like Popovich in the NBA.

Yes, it certainly was during this game. When Team USA couldn't get on the fastbreak, they did their crummy isolation plays which have been proven time and time again to be ineffective against a zone defense.

JGX made a good point that Coach K is not using the bench at all, just like at Duke. He's right. That first squad wasn't doing too well, so why wouldn't Coach K go to the bench? He has this odd belief that players need until the fourth quarter to get warmed up, I guess. Still, he's a good coach, even though I really think we should have had the subs in during the third.

I felt sorry for Brazil, they were so close but the ball didn't want to go in for their favor. Just unlucky.

Brilliant coaching don't you think: on last day of three games in a row, completely dump your bench and play the oldest members of the team (who aren't even in good shape) over 30 minutes each.

Its not like we have scrubs at the 6-9 spots!!! Coach K is horrible.

Brazil lost may turn out to be good afterall. If things hold form, USA would play either Greece or Spain in quarterfinals.

Iguodala also wrote that he just finished reading "The Alchemist," by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho, about a man who travels to the Middle East and ends up in a disaster. Prophetic?

Prophetic as far as his disasterous contribution to the team or the USA's eventual disasterous end if they keep playing the way they have?

According to Andre Iguodala's Twitter page:
