this is nonsense. look at the philippines-argentina game, and see how nocioni guarded blatche. in our tagalog language,

"inaasawa na ni nocioni si blatche."

translation: nocioni used leech-like defense on blatche."

so the shorter nocioni played "chaotic" basketball on blatche to frustrate him?!?

not "Wife-like"? :D

No, not Finland or African teams. I mean specifically Finland at eurobasket 2013, Nigeria at OQT 2012 (not at the Olympics), and some other teams I have seen at some point of time. There have been many of them which were tough nuts to crack because they played close to the foul barrier, gained some momentum and had nothing to loose because they were underdogs. Although I agree that the Philippines is a case on its own, because they lack height. S

What I see when watching the Philippines is that they are a shorter, less skilled team and they are trying to compensate that by playing a very physical game.

Ok. what you see as chaotic and physical game by the Philippines is borne out of the two factors.

First, the Filipino brand of play is different than that of the Europeans. What you see as crude primitive or "strange" basketball because it doesnt quite follow the norms of Euro-ball doesn't necessarily mean that it is inferior. Its just the way basketball is played here in the Philippines. You cant expect us to play Euro ball any more than we expect you to play the Filipino style of play. That is how we are brought up in the world of basketball. We play different. Different doesn't necessarily translate to inferiority.

Second, we lack size. There's nothing we can do about that. We are not able to field a team that is tall enough by European standards now or for the foreseeable future. If we play the way any Normal European team play (especially in defense) we would be totally crushed by opponents (Euro teams will be able to shoot all day long over our outstretched arms). So we have to do it in a way where our size disadvantage is a bit negligible. Hence the kind of defense you see played by the Philippine NT on their much bigger opponent.

I hope this enlightened you on the "peculiar" way Filipino plays basketball.

So you are implying that this is the kind of ball game teams play in the Philippino league?

One can not say that tactically teams are on the same level if one is using poise or aggressiveness as its signature, while the other team uses a wider source of tactics. In this particular matchup and in all the games sofar I haven't seen that the Philippines has a wider source of skills than Greece (or some other teams in the group).

Teams can not all be skillfully equal. That's sports. I can't follow the argument that "two teams are tactically and skillfully equal, but one team tries to break the rhythm of the game because they are shorter and not because the have lesser skill set."

Greece also tries to break the rhythm of top teams in football. Far thing to say that Greece has as much skills as say Argentina in football, but Greece are slower so they choose to play defense and break the rhythm.

Anyway, I am surprised by the performance of the Philippines nonetheless. They have showed the world that they are no easy ride for anyone.

You should watch some PBA games my friend
It is a mixture of basketball and wrestling. Small players pushing and shoving, no harm, no foul. This brand of play has made the Philippines a better team to compete against the taller opponents which is 99% of the time. Look at how Pingris works down low against Greece. He must have been a head and a half smaller but he would still box out, scramble and do whatever it takes to contribute.
The difference in EURO games is they are very tactical with very elaborate plays. In the pinoy way it is very sophisticated and also tactical but we can live with impulsive and reactive plays. And also we will live and die with our threes. Some viewers are confused why take a 3 and not drive in in the dying seconds. A 3 might be a higher percentage for our small team.

The Filipino style of play is run and gun and Gilas has incorporated the dribble drive offense to use our only advantage, our speed
they are actually playing much slower now because of Dray but when Marcus was playing they would be running the opponents to the ground eg Qatar and Kazak
It is a very interesting style of play that is why we never get tired of the pBA even if they play almost the whole year round. Also there are other leagues and even college games are watched by 20,000 live at MOA.
In one game there are so many emotions per play, per quarter and at the end. That is our telenovela, our drama series with our superheroes winning at the end. BBall is life in the Phils because it mirrors life and give us the motivation to be the hero at the end be it in bball or life.
Thanks for appreciating our brand of play hope you enjoy it more

Right, I hope the Philippines get some wins in this tournament. They are a joy to watch. Bring some extra dimension in the tournament.

Wrestling is not basketball. Wrestling is wrestling.

If you can't play the game properly, choose a different sport.

basketball is a contact sport. now I see why americans call euros as soft, they complain a lot if they get hit. if you can't play through contact, don't play basketball, play chess:p, there you can use all the tactics that you like

Since when someone is so very proud of dirty, under the belt/behind the back etc hits, scratches, bites during a basketball game is beyond me.Fighting to the last breath, to the last second is not really the same to fighting dirty.

Btw this is not some local tournament, this is WC you know, so i think we all should respect and adjust to the rules, not play like we probably use to play in our local championship.

huh? playing dirty? you see tenorio hit a guy in the balls and you already conclude that all our players are dirty? can you give proof? if you will cite your players saying this and that, would it even occur to you that maybe they are just making excuses.

our players play harder than your players because we are smaller. do you expect us to just lay back there and let you abuse us with your superior size? I guess maybe the greek team could'nt face that fact that they were outworked by the smaller team.

and finally, there are referees on the court. its their decision to judge how much physicality will be allowed in the game.

Tenorio's was just one incident, as many greek players talked about dirty hits, and this is something that they 've never done before as far as i know. I apologize if i ruin your image for your team by mentioning that.

Those hits are, also, called "dirty" because it is not easy for the referees to spot them. This is not the definition of contact and physical game in worldwide basketball, that's what i am trying to explain you.
And small size is not an excuse for that kind of things.

Strange, I remember Chris Kaman complaining about how physical game was when playing against European NT's.

I guess they play like pussies in the NBA too.

Only real manly basketball is played in PH, you know, the place where ball grabbing is applauded by the NT coach.

PS: Funny how the Greek team was outworked my the manly PH NT and still won.

if you dont like the physical plays of the phils dont watch man, you dont have to

there is a difference between playing physical and playing dirty
you havent seen how dirty we can play if we are forced to it lol

you have a different way of playing and we also have a different way
but the phils has gained popularity the last few days is because of their play and heart, not because of their dirty tactics

Thank you, but please try harder.

PS: Funny how a 7'0 guy picks a fight with a 5'9 manly PH player. Real Pussy.

The euro players probably didn't realize that because Filipino players are smaller if they box out their arms would hit the stomach of the opponents not just their arms and hands also so it is as if they are intentionally hurt them although it is not really the case. Once we are playing a local league and the guard of the opposing team was boxing out our center, unfortunately our player thought he was intentionally hit so he shove the player guarding him. There was a little commotion and as the officer of the day I tried to pacify both players and the guard explained that he might have probably hit our center when he was boxing out but with no intention of hitting the bigger guy who was hit in the stomach. I think probably this is one of the reason too.

grabeh ah mga iyakin pla sila

trans: Our team is physical but we are not dirty :)
