Is this the likely Greek NT roster for the WC?

Calathes, Mantzaris
Sloukas, Larentzakis
Papanikolaou, Papapetrou
Antetokounmpo, Printezis, Mitoglou
Bourousis, Koufos, Papagiannis

A fifth guard instead of Mitoglou would be nice to have, but I'm not sure who that would be. Any breakout performers in Greek A1 this year? Why isn't Agravanis playing this year?

Is Tyler Dorsey in the mix?

Also - you hear anything about Naz Mitrou Long? He still has not played for Canada in FIBA and there are always rumors he may play for Greece.
My guess is keeps his options open until he sorts out a more defined career path (NBA or Europe). I'd assume if he ends up playing in Greece (or elsewhere in Europe) he'd be much more likely to play with Greece.

hey, Chris, welcome back!

so, the obvious question; which Antetokounmpo is that in your roster?

For me :

Calathes, Dorsey
Sloukas, Larentzakis
Giannis, Papanikolaou, Thanassis
Printezis, Papapetrou
Koufos, Mitoglou, (Bourousis or Papagiannis)

I think that Mantzaris does not have to be in the team, I prefer Dorsey

I think that it’s undeniable that the 1987 team begat Spanoulis, Diamanidis and that great generation. But now 13 or 14 years later did the ‘05 European champion and 2006 team that beat the Americans give birth to anything similar other than Giannis ? Are there other young prospects on those levels ? If not the problem might be that the ‘05-‘06 triumphs coincided with the 2004 Euro championship and that obviously trumps and dwarfs all.

some possible rosters for Greek NT:

https://www.sport24.gr/Basket/Mundobasket/dwdekada-ethnikhs-elladas-aytous-epeleksan-ta-melh-toy-sport24-gr.5449243.html

Everyone in the article agrees on
Calathes
Sloukas
Larentzakis
T. Antetokounmpo
G. Antetokounmpo
Papapetrou
Vasilopoulos (!)
Bourousis

The remaining guard position (most went with 4 instead of 5 guards) is between Koniaris, Athinaiou, Mantzaris, Dorsey.
The remaining 2-3 forwards (most went with 6-7 forwards and only one center) are Papanikolaou, Printezis, Mitoglou.
Some have selected a second center, usually Koufos.

Nazr Mitrou Long (combo guard 1993 6-4, gleague) has got Greek Passport
He could be an option like “Naturalized” player?

But Tyler Dorsey (and hypothetically Zach Auguste) will play like “Naturalized” or not?
Only one “Naturalized” is allowed in Fiba competition

Thanks

Ok, I’ve found the answer (on nbadraft.net):
“Auguste and Dorsey both had Greek citizenship rights at birth (non naturalized).”

Giannis has confirmed his partecipation in the 2019 FIBA WORLD CUP.
What is the strongest team possible?

These are in my opinion the possible players (in bold my personal choice):
N.CALATHES ‘89 pg/g
K.SLOUKAS ‘90 pg/g
D.Katsivelis ‘91 pg
V.Mantzaris ‘90 pg/g
A.Koniaris ‘97 pg
G.Larentzakis ‘93 g
T.DORSEY ‘96 g
N.MITROU LONG ‘93 p/g (NATURALIZED)
N.Pappas ‘90 g
G.ANTETOKOUNMPO ‘94 f
K.PAPANIKOLAOU ‘90 f
T.ANTETOKOUNMPO ‘92 f
G.PRINTEZIS ‘85 f/c
I.PAPAPETROU ‘94 f/c
K.MITOGLOU ‘96 f/c
V.Panagiotis ‘84 f/c
L.Chrysikopoulos ‘92 f/c
I.BOUROUSIS ‘83 c
K.KOUFOS ‘89 c
G.Papagiannis ‘97 c
Z.Auguste ‘93 c

Greek NT coach Skourtopoulos on his way to US to meet with four NBA players the team is targeting for the WC 19: Antetokounmpo, Koufos, Dorsey, Mitrou-Long.

https://www.sport24.gr/Basket/Mundobasket/ta-ksespasmata-toy-rik-pitino-sta-timeout-toy-panathhnaikou.5478862.html

Based on the targets of this recruiting trip, it seems they are aiming for the following roster

Calathes, Mitrou-Long
Sloukas, Dorsey
Papapetrou, Papanikolaou, T. Antetokounmpo
G. Antetokounmpo, Printezis
Koufos, Bourousis

12th man: Larentzakis, Mitoglou or Papagiannis

I think that Papagiannis, being the future center of Greece, will definitely be on that team. Especially since he showed tremendous progress this year. On the other hand, I haven't seen Mitoglou during the later stages of Euroleague play-offs. And I think Greece needs some shooters on the team. So for me it's:

Calathes,
Sloukas, Larentzakis. Dorsey
Papanikolaou, Papapetrou, T. Antetokounmpo
G. Antetokounmpo, Printezis
Bourousis, Koufos, Papagiannis

As for Mitrou-Long being naturalized. The whole point of selecting Mitrou-Long is his Greek roots, because Greece can have an non-naturalized roster. Otherwise Greece could naturalize someone better.

If you want Giannis playing for Greece, you have to accept Thanasis too. He wont play without his brother, but my roster would be like this:

Calathes, Koniaris
Sloukas (Dorsey, Larentzakis)
Papanikolaou, Papapetrou
(Giannis), Printezis, Mitoglou
Bourousis, Koufos, Papagiannis

Greece neglected to raise some prospects and the ones who were promising couldnt develop well like Charalampopolous (god, i hate his surname) and also Papagiannis. It was a mistake to go to the states at young age.

Now Greece has no Center except a never playing Koufos and a 36 old Bourousis, there is also no substitution for Printezis who had a very bad Euroleaugue season. Without giannis this team will sink into oblivion.

Lets wait for Kalaitzakis, Rogvapolous and Arsenopolous :)

If I remember correctly Greece without Giannis and Koufos was in the QF during last Eurobasket. Bourousis and Printezis are somewhat on the decline, but players like Papagiannis, Papapetrou, Sloukas, Papanikolaou, Dorsey and perhaps Thanassis have made progress for the better. Even without Giannis I believe that Greece has the potential to be Semi-Finalist in Europe, provided that they have a good coach, good chemistry and avoid teams like Serbia, France, Spain in the process. Aside from these teams, perhaps Lithuania or a tournament Cinderella team could potentially beat this Greek team.

In the near future, after the Olympic cycle, I see Bourousis and Printezis retiring. While Papagiannis and Mitoglou will get better and replace them. Granted, Greece will still be somewhat thin in the center position.

I am not a firm believer in the youth teams, rather I would rather bet on players who start developing at age 20 to 24. And it's better to develop one star player, like Diamantidis or Spanoulis than 5-6 decent/good players.

Yeah with 4 losses and 3 wins in a very cheap tournament and with 1 loss (Giannis).

I agree with Sloukas and Papapetrou but you cant be serious about Thanassis, Dorsey especially.

Every team except USA is beatable. On the other hand i consider even teams like Italy, Germany etc clear better. Especially Germany will be very strong in the future.

This Tournament is quarter finals the last possible station at best. Next Tournaments will be tougher especially without Giannis.

I don't take the losses very seriously. How many times did we witness Spain or Serbia loose games in regular phase and start steamrolling during K.O. phase. The team had very bad chemistry and showed some of the potential during the K.O. phase. With a good coach they could have actually made the semi finals.

The premiminary squad for the WC2019 is:

Giannis Athineou, Giannis Adetokounmpo, Thanasis Adetokounmpo, Kostas Adetokounmpo, Panagiotis Vasilopoulos, Nick Calathes, Antonis Koniaris, Giannoulis Larentzakis, Vaggelis Mantzaris, Dinos Mitoglou, Giannis Bourousis, Tyler Dorsey, Giorgos Papagiannis, Kostas Papanikolaou, Ioannis Papapetrou, Giorgos Printzezis, Christos Saloustros and Kostas Sloukas.

No invites for Zach Auguste, Kostas Koufos or Zach Mitrou-Long.

The final 12 baring injuries should be:

PG Nick Calathes, Kostas Sloukas.
SG Giannoulis Larentzakis, Tyler Dorsey
SF Thanasis Adetokounmpo, Kostas Papanikolaou, Ioannis Papapetrou,
PF Giannis Adetokounmpo, Dinos Mitoglou, Giorgos Printzezis
C Giannis Bourousis, Giorgos Papagiannis

We are quite limited in guard positions as well as at C
