(I would post link but rikardur will ban me if I do)
we should create an american-greek support group.
All this baklava kokorec and raki sounds bad to the stomach.
R u kidding me? I love Baklava and kokorec! I dont like raki, well at least the one that my dad makes! lol![]()
greek baklava is very different from turkish. It smells a lot of goat butter and the nut taste is too much strong.I also like greek baklava but not turkish.
Raki is the same though.excellent.
Is anyone here travelling to Ankara?I would rather go to Izmir even just to watch others' NT matches.
I have tried, Greek, Turkish and Syrian Baklava. From all 3, Syrian is the best. Second favourite is turkish and third Greek.
ah lol ok then since you tried it you know what to expect..I have tried only greek and turkish.Turkish has much better crust thiner and more melting in the mouth but the smell of the butter and the fistiki (?) is too strong.I went to the best baklava shops in istambuli went there prepared but all the same so it must be the recipe that is different not just one inciddent.noone from our group liked it.
But I hear syrian sweets and cuisine in general is one of the best.[to tell you the truth-honestly I wasn't impressed with the turkish one. just my 2 cents for what they're worth.]
Yes, I also forgot to mention the findiks Turks will be carrying in their socks and will then throw at Greek players (not all, they will also eat some).
I have been in instanbul 3 times. Actually i go there quite often for business so i must admit that i feel at home there.
Mind you i do have roots from asia minor so i guess it is in my blood to like turkish food.
Syrian sweets are by far the best. So is their couzin..basically all levante countries..(Syria, lebanon, Jordan) have excellent food.
you have only been there 3 times but you already feel at home there? How many times have you been in your actual home then?![]()
Ah no,there's nothing in the blood,it's all individual.
I love finnish cuisine and I would have some problems passing off as finnish to tell you the truth.
But great, you should start a thread and maybe share some advice and tips with greek fans of waht to see, visit and eat in Turkey?![]()
But some of the whistlers and boo-birds will be expressing long standing, often politicised anti-Greek sentiment, and it doesn't help that PAO and OLY players are highly paid, perceived-to-be-spoiled/arrogant athletes that deserve some measure of come-uppance in their opinion.
The only scenario that I can see getting out of hand is if the crowd turned racist, and started doing monkey chants or throwing bananas at Big Sofo. I don't know the character of Turkish society, but I would hope that most Turks or fans in general would be above such racist behavior. Unfortunately, such incidents are a fact of life in some parts of Turkey.
It is very clear that Turkey rigged the draw. Instead of putting Greece to play either in Istanbul or Izmir where access is easy from all over Greece and Greek islands they 'miraculously' put Greece in Ankara, a place with limited access from Greece, no historical interest whatsoever and almost non-existing Greek community.
Also I have already read in several Turkish forums (I would post link but rikardur will ban me if I do) that they are already planning a hostile welcome to the Grece National Team.
They are already talking about making tons of dolmas (half with meat and half yalanci and even some yaprak dolmasi), souvlaki, yuvarlakia, boreks, lukums, kofte and plenty of baklava filled with nice sweet syrup and of course bricks of sheep feta peynir. Did I mention kokorec, kadaif, yogurtlu kebab and bottles of raki? Also they will be bringing trucks full of nice juicy Diarbakir watermelons to throw at Greek players and chikita bananas from some Latin American country to throw on Big Sofo.
The home crowd in Turkey will be cheering against the Greek team in every game they'll play. They will be in hostile territory from beginning to the end of the tournament. Majority of the people will definitely want to see Greece go down in defeat. Greece NT will be the team to beat in the WC in Turkey.
It's 100% true, and it's one of the interesting subplots to the tournament.
Even if Greece NT returns the internationally experienced core of the 2004-2008 team they will have never faced such a hostile crowd in international competition together.
Japan was mostly neutral, kind of hoping for upsets but not fervently anti-Greece.
There's no question Greece will be playing before hostile crowds during their tournament run, both from the Turkish fans and from fans of other nations. I imagine most of the hostility will emanate from people who want to see the favorite lose; in this case Greece, Spain or whoever else.
