Greater Accra basketball League: Hoops win against Holy Family in Over Time 78-85
May1, 09: Two days after spoiling the debut of T'Youth in Ghana's top league, Hoops was up against Holy Family. Another new team in the league who defeated DC Dynamics in their opener. Both teams meeting for the first time and undefeated in the opening stages of the league. One side will have to leave defeated. The first quarter started on a slow note which Hoops took 9-12. At the break, Coach Thompson was angry that his boys were not as aggressive and wanted them to step on it in the next quarter. At half time the score was 25-31 with Hoops still leading. Third quarter the lead not changing as it ended 38-47. With victory looking certain, the players not been as aggressive as the last two quarters, saw Holy Family closing up and Hoops in foul trouble with I. Mbah and S. Oladipo fouling out through controversial circumstances with seven minutes left. Holy Family briefly took the lead and was up 66-65 with ten seconds remaining. A three pointer from K. Dewee of Cape Coast Hoops saw the team take a two points lead with only five seconds left. This made the bench to rejoice which led to another controversial technical foul call by the referee against Hoops giving two free throws and possession to Holy Family which they made tieing the score 68pts apiece. This sent the game into overtime with Hoops outscoring Holy Family 7-17. Final score 78-85. H. Mensah who came in in the third quarter had 23pts, 7 asts and 2 stls while I. Mbah had 15pts, 8rbds, 2blks. K. Dewee and E. Malouta each had 8pts while S. Oladipo had 7pts, 3rbds, 2asts. Match Roster: H. Mensah (G-6'0"), K. Baffoe (G-6'4"), E. Malouta (G-6'1"), S. Greater Accra Basketball League: Hoops defeat Tema Youth in first match 73-72
April 29, '09: Yes, the premium basketball league in Ghana has started. This year is expected to be full of fireworks as all teams vow to show up and play their best. This showed clearly when the boys from Tema making their debut in the league met Hoops. The match was a cracker from jump ball to the blast of the final whistle. Fans at the Lebanon House all agree that this was one of the classic basketball matches they have ever watched in Accra. First quarter ended 20-15 in favor of Hoops. At half time, T'Youth led 33-38. The third quarter showed both sides playing exceptional basketball as both sides wanting to send the signal to upcoming opponents they were a team to be reckon with. T'Youth won that quarter 49-52. The final quarter was the hottest which saw S. Oladipo of Hoops making two crucial three pointers which saw the scores tie at 62 and 67 respectively. Tema Youth lead with 7pts with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter but the hard fighting spirit of the Hoops players did not die as they fought on scoring an 8-0 run in the final minutes. At the final whistle Hoops won 73-72. This brought tears into the eyes of the lads from Tema as the victory was whisked from under their noses. Ifeanyi Mbah of Cape Coast Hoops scored 25pts, 11 rebounds, 2 steals and 2blocks, while C. Mammie had 16pts, 5rbds, 2stls, 2 blks follow by K. Dewee with 8pts, 7rbds, 2blks, and 1ast. Young sixteen year old, Reginald Agbeko, making his debut had 7pts, 4rbds and 2blks. Hoops roster for the match included: H. Mensah (G-6'0"), K. Baffoe (G-6'4"), N. Tandoh (G-6'3), E.
