Greater Accra basketball League: Hoops win against Holy Family in Over Time 78-85
May1, 09: Two days after spoiling the debut of T'Youth in Ghana's top league, Hoops was up against Holy Family. Another new team in the league who defeated DC Dynamics in their opener. Both teams meeting for the first time and undefeated in the opening stages of the league. One side will have to leave defeated. The first quarter started on a slow note which Hoops took 9-12. At the break, Coach Thompson was angry that his boys were not as aggressive and wanted them to step on it in the next quarter. At half time the score was 25-31 with Hoops still leading. Third quarter the lead not changing as it ended 38-47. With victory looking certain, the players not been as aggressive as the last two quarters, saw Holy Family closing up and Hoops in foul trouble with I. Mbah and S. Oladipo fouling out through controversial circumstances with seven minutes left. Holy Family briefly took the lead and was up 66-65 with ten seconds remaining. A three pointer from K. Dewee of Cape Coast Hoops saw the team take a two points lead with only five seconds left. This made the bench to rejoice which led to another controversial technical foul call by the referee against Hoops giving two free throws and possession to Holy Family which they made tieing the score 68pts apiece. This sent the game into overtime with Hoops outscoring Holy Family 7-17. Final score 78-85. H. Mensah who came in in the third quarter had 23pts, 7 asts and 2 stls while I. Mbah had 15pts, 8rbds, 2blks. K. Dewee and E. Malouta each had 8pts while S. Oladipo had 7pts, 3rbds, 2asts. Match Roster: H. Mensah (G-6'0"), K. Baffoe (G-6'4"), E. Malouta (G-6'1"), S. Greater Accra Basketball League: Hoops defeat Tema Youth in first match 73-72
April 29, '09: Yes, the premium basketball league in Ghana has started. This year is expected to be full of fireworks as all teams vow to show up and play their best. This showed clearly when the boys from Tema making their debut in the league met Hoops. The match was a cracker from jump ball to the blast of the final whistle. Fans at the Lebanon House all agree that this was one of the classic basketball matches they have ever watched in Accra. First quarter ended 20-15 in favor of Hoops. At half time, T'Youth led 33-38. The third quarter showed both sides playing exceptional basketball as both sides wanting to send the signal to upcoming opponents they were a team to be reckon with. T'Youth won that quarter 49-52. The final quarter was the hottest which saw S. Oladipo of Hoops making two crucial three pointers which saw the scores tie at 62 and 67 respectively. Tema Youth lead with 7pts with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter but the hard fighting spirit of the Hoops players did not die as they fought on scoring an 8-0 run in the final minutes. At the final whistle Hoops won 73-72. This brought tears into the eyes of the lads from Tema as the victory was whisked from under their noses. Ifeanyi Mbah of Cape Coast Hoops scored 25pts, 11 rebounds, 2 steals and 2blocks, while C. Mammie had 16pts, 5rbds, 2stls, 2 blks follow by K. Dewee with 8pts, 7rbds, 2blks, and 1ast. Young sixteen year old, Reginald Agbeko, making his debut had 7pts, 4rbds and 2blks. Hoops roster for the match included: H. Mensah (G-6'0"), K. Baffoe (G-6'4"), N. Tandoh (G-6'3), E. May 8, '09: Cape Coast Hoops blowout against C.Y.O move them on top of the GAABL standing with three straight wins. The boys from Cape Coast were too strong for their opponents and could had easily taken the points to more than one hundred but decided to slow their attack as they are anticipating their toughest challenge come May 16 against defending champion CEPS Braves. The match against C.Y.O. saw the team using most of its second string that had not yet played or had enough minutes in the past two games. Top scorers like I. Mbah, K. Dewee, J. Amu were rested for the next big game. The match which was a one sided affair saw hoops leading the first quarter 3-20. At the half time the score read 8-35. Strong defense and swift attacks saw CYO struggling to meet up in the third quarter which ended 17-54. At the final whistle it was a complete annihilation of CYO who went down 22-78. C. Mammie had 27pts, 7rbds; 2assts. E. Malouta had 17pts, 3stls, 1asst, 1rbd. Young and sensational Reginald Agbeko had 12pts and 8rbds. Leading in rebounds was also another youngster, M. Mensah with 9rbds three of which were offensive rebounds. He also had a monster dunk in the game and two blocks. S. Oladipo had 7pts, 6rbds, 3assts and 1stl. M. Dadson contributed 2pts, 5rbds and 2blks. See video

Dec. 19 '09: The Grand Finale of the D'Elite Stomp the Yard Hoops was held at the Legon Campus in Accra. The ten males champions and ten female champions teams from the ten communities were all in attendance. It was the battle of the titans and basketball fans from all over Accra and also outside of Accra were in attendance. The three courts on the campus ground were all used for the games which started at 10am and finished at 10pm. It was a whole day of class basketball at its best. Hoops was in Group B along with Magic, Atoms, Humble Rastas and De Wolves. Group B were Tema Youth, Legon Lions, Yotive, Panthers and Dream Team. Hoops won three and lost one in the group stages to advance to the knockout round on top of their group, defeating Yotive in the knockout round to set for a final showdown. Humble Rastas who came second in Group A defeated the Tema Youth boys to meet Hoops who earlier beat them in the group stage. In the final they were no match to the attack and defense as the boys who were smelling gold did not let their foot of the peddle beating them for the championship. It was total celebration in the Hoops Camp. If one can right recall, Hoops won the first tournament of the year in Tema and has now won the last tournament of the year in Accra. The other event of the day which many were waiting for was the slam dunk competition. Saykan Bestman of Cape Coast Hoops won the event after jumping over a car in his final dunk. That sent the crowd into a frenzy. Watch his dunks video. We are the Champions and we thank all our fans, supporters and well wishers for been there for us through out and we wishing all a merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

LEBANON HOUSE- To put it simple, everybody was surprised. Many of the fans at the game still held the believe that TY would win this game even in the last minute only to witness the biggest upset of the season.
C.Y.O harassed TY at the low post very well
It was a game of strength, athleticism and well structured play versus undersized, determination, will to win and a very fundamental game. C.Y.O played the most fundamental game one could think of making very good use their quickness on most of the runs. Most of C.Y.O's players just stood to the occasion playing vital roles on the road to the win. Both starters and subs came into the game with the same positive attitude to pull the surprise. Rasta, Sarfo and Onana were just on fire for C.Y.O.
The truth is Tema Youth didn't play bad, they played very good basketball but they over stuck to their offensive play which involve a lot of post up game. But then C.Y.O was playing zone defense so there was no way posting up would have helped the situation. A lot of ball movement and shooting would have helped to them to open up the C.Y.O defense.
C.Y.O led the first and second quarters. TY was then able to square at 54 at the end of the third quarter. TY failed to take advantage of the draw and C.Y.O broke away again leaving TY to rather try to catch up to everybody's amazement.TY then got into foul trouble with four of their starters fouling out at crunch time.
Then came the daily match day saga of complaints of poor officiating (watch out for a feature on officiating soon)
But after all said and done "Amazing Happened in Gh Basketball"

Cantonments - Yotives came into the game knowing that they had to win. They had lost 6 out of their last seven games played and are on the brink of possible relegation to the second division come next season. Warriors also were coming from a one game win after previously loosing closely to TY in the "best match of the season so far".
Yotive started out strong getting buckets early in the first quarter. Most of the damage caused by Yotive was a result of Richmond's sharp shooting on the day. He hit 4 treys in the game, two of those in the first minute of the first quarter. Warriors' Ezekiel Odonkor showed up late and couldn't be in the starting five. He came in wit about 5:30 left on the clock and made Warriors' first 12 points getting to the end of the first and at the beginning of the second. But Yotive still managed to take the first 9 - 12.
The results of the first quarter caused the already talkative coach of Warriors, Abeiku Solomon to become more animated. He just couldn't sit down. He yelled out instructions to his team all day Yotive lacked a good bench and they suffered for it from the second quarter on. They just couldn't match Warriors strength and aggressiveness. Paul Eta was himself all day for Warriors. he played very tough on the defense grabbing a good number of boards for his team. Ezekiel and Varranda also played their usual stepping up when their team needed them most. It was now a no show for Yotives as the third started, they were unable to match the Warriors no matter what they did. it was a 63 - 39 blow out by the end of the day.
Are Warriors now ready to face Tema Youth? ....many questions could be asked about both sides before that crucial encounter ensues.

LEBANON HOUSE - Tudu based Magic meets Mataheko based Holy Family tomorrow at the Lebanon House (named the evil forest by the Magic team). Magic is looking better right now with a team PPG of 53.7 compared to the 49.7 of HF. Beefing up their squad at the mid season with two hard working forwards (Daniel Danso a.k.a dee double and Ataa Anu). They also come into this game having won their last game after loosing to CEPS the before. It is very certain their 40 point blow out of the Jets has really increased the confidence and morale of the team. The entire Magic team just stood to the occasion that day. With Tsatsu, Theo and Francis Blocking shots, Ivan and Jordan knocking down shots from range and everybody else playing their roles well like they did, HF will have a lot to ponder over on both ends of the floor. They are currently placed 7th on the standings with 11 points and only separated from Holy Family at the 6th position by a 10 PD.

Time to rebound...the entire game was full of strong and physical defense
LEBANON HOUSE - The Magic team can certainly continue to call Lebanon House the "evil forest". They are 4 - 4 at their home court. They won their second straight game there after a 3 game loosing streak at the prisons court in Cantonments.
This game for me, over lived its expectation. It was fun filled and competitive through the entire 40 minutes of action. Both teams started the game playing very good quality defense not allowing any cheap shots under their watch. The game was aggressive on both sides of the floor and was becoming sought of barren until Magic's PG, Jordan knocked down two pointer 3 minutes after tip off that set things off. HF won the quarter 8 - 6. Mainly due to the fact that Magic's players made a couple of bad defensive decisions.

Magic simply took charge from the second quarter, quickly taking a 6 point lead early to leave HF trailing all day. Magic's players once again rose to the occasion apart from dee double who didn't have a very good day and had limited playing time. Their front courts performance was just amazing, they held HF's big man to less production the entire game. Rebounds were their job for the day, if u ask me and more importantly they hit those high percentage shots in the paint on the offense as well.
As predicted in the preview, HF had their own problems to deal with, Germain played full time with a not so well healed rib injury, Djimatey played bad on the day, their coach got angry with the team ( and was seen sitting away from his team without any chit chat after the game)
and most of their players just failed to perform.
Djimatey was too selfish on the day. He just didn't have trust in any of his teammates. he ran the fast breaks alone barely dropping dimes, shot 0-7 from behind the arc and still didn't stop shooting. For us here we think, he killed his team slowly.

But then it wasn't over until it was over, Holy Family tried somewhat of a rally with about 3 minutes to go on the clock. They switched to man on man defense to try to limit the Magic's scoring and rather ended up over fouling(Rodney had 4 fouls in the 4th; the only quarter he played in). But then it was too late, magic was also running their own unseen rally. Tsatsu Blocked a Victor Ziga lay up to start the rally and from then Magic was out of range for HF....

Magic now prepare to meet C.Y.O...are we in for another upset?...I don't think so because the Magicians from Tudu seem to be getting their stage work together after a very bad campaign last season.
