Norwood to play for RP in FIBA Asia Championship

Norwood to play for RP in FIBA Asia Championship

US college star may play for RP five
By: Rey Joble
HIS name does ring a bell as he has made quite an impact in the US NCAA while playing for George Mason.

But who is Gabe Norwood?

Norwood, an American collegiate standout, has a quarter of Filipino blood and is excited to learn about the possibility of representing the Philippines in the Olympic qualifying FIBA-Asia Championship.

He played for the national team handled by coach Chot Reyes during the Filipinos’ several tune-up matches in Carlson, California and quickly impressed everyone with his flexibility and athleticism.

And he is seriously being considered to join the SMC-RP squad along with Fil-Am rookie Kelly Williams and former PBA MVP Willie Miller.

But there’s a hitch.

Norwood has yet to avail of a Philippine passport and has to fix this problem the soonest possible time to join the squad in Belgrade.

The Nationals will stay in the camp in Belgrade from June 12-20 in between tune-up matches with the bigger and stronger European players.

“We are still fixing the exact date of his arrival. Malamang, he will meet us in Belgrade,” said SMC-RP assistant coach Aboy Castro.

Once a visitor in the country with Athletes in Action, a sports ministry that allows athletes to communicate their faith to those in other parts of the world, Norwood and his squad played six different teams sent around the world.

Norwood made the obvious choice of traveling to the South Pacific to go back to his roots in the Philippines.

“I was blessed with the opportunity to travel with Athletes in Action to the Philippines. We played against numerous college teams and the Filipino National Team. Being one-quarter Filipino, it might give me the opportunity to be part of their Olympic Team in 2008,” said Norwood in one of his interviews.

An intelligent athlete, he played in all 35 games in the 2005-06 season and was sixth on the team in minutes played.

While Norwood is so excited to suit up for the Philippines, Kelly Williams appears to be less interested.

Buddy Encarnado, Sta. Lucia’s representative to the PBA board, has reportedly allowed Williams to join the RP squad, but the Fil-Am rookie swingman, top overall pick in the last PBA draft, is still thinking whether or not to join the team.

I think most of the April 17 newspapers carried this story:

US-based cager being eyed for RP five

By WAYLON GALVEZ

ASIDE FROM meeting its objectives in a two-week training camp in the US, coach Chot Reyes may have found his 12th man for the national team.

Reyes, who arrived Sunday night with members of the RP five, said yesterday that he will meet with his coaching staff to assess the performance of Fil-American guard Gabe Norwood.

The 6-foot-5 Norwood, who played point guard for George Mason University, a US NCAA Division 1 school which entered the Final Four two years ago, suited up for several games for the nationals.

"Yes he (Norwood) could be the 12th man but that’s got to be decided by the coaching staff," Reyes told the Bulletin.

"We’ve been keeping in touch with him since last year. We already know that he’s a Filipino-American. We met his family in Los Angeles, and there’s no doubt, dugong Pinoy."

Reyes said that the 22-year-old Norwoods’ grandparents hail from Pangasinan and Tarlac.

"The player we need (from the PBA) won’t be released by his mother team, that’s why we have to find elsewhere. Gabe is an excellent player, and he proved he can fit with other players," added Reyes.

Yes he is! :)

Believe it or not, you may argue with this...

I think our NT is already pushing the panic button..

Gabe Norwood is a bit skeptical about his RP team stint..

He hopes to get the most out of it..

His handler envisions Gabe Norwood as an NBA Player..

Let's just hope that RP Team will help uplift his career...

as what project888 fears, saints13 posted some images that can be beneficial to scouting eyes:D

here, from picture 1) & 5), norwood does Manu Ginobili in protecting the ball. so Karim will have an idea where to swipe the ball lol

while pictures 2, 3 & 4 shows that he can dunk easily. so our opponent may plan to remove the rim

Those pictures are available in the internet..no big deal :)

It's a shallow way of scouting by looking at pictures alone, if you want to hide players, why don't you let them wear a mask or something :D

I didn't post this pics for the scouts, its for the fellow Filipinos here.

Gabe Norwood is in a Final Four NCAA division 1 team, it's easy to access infos and pictures about him on the net.
