I think Norwood's younger brother can play in our country because if he have some Filipino Blood in his veins he can always come here and play for our national team. :)

Norwood to pursue NBA dream
By Rey Bancod, Manila Bulletin
December 12, 2007

NAKHON RATCHASIMA -- Fil-American Gabe Norwood is one guy who loves to dunk -- never a layup -- but doesn't want to draw much of the attention if he could help it.

But if and when he makes it to the National Basketball Association (NBA), Norwood should better be prepared for the media frenzy back home.

The six-foot-five former guard of the Greg Mason University has not given up on his dream to play in the NBA after not being drafted this year.

"Certainly, I would love to play in the NBA," Norwood said Tuesday inside the Athletes Village.

"I wasn't drafted this year because my numbers in college were not that spectacular," Norwood said.

"Technically, I'm a free agent. That's what I understand. After my stint in the PBL (Philippine Basketball League), I would go back home and see how things unfold," the 21-year-old Norwood said.

Norwood said he's not discounting the possibility of joining the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) next season while waiting for his chance in the NBA.

He said he was invited once by a scout representing the Utah Jazz, but nothing came out of his tryout.

"It wasn't even held in Utah," Norwood said.

Philippine Basketball League (PBL) Commissioner Chino Trinidad has nothing but praise for Norwood whom he describes as a nice fellow on and off the court.

"I would love to have him in the team. He completes the team with his selflessness and energy," Trinidad said.

Norwood scored only eight points in the team's opening game against Cambodia, letting his teammates to shine.

But against Indonesia, the athletic do-it-all player showed a glimpse of what he can do, firing 19 points, including a vicious slam dunk toward the end of the game.

Through it all, Norwood has remained humble.

In an interview with Washington Post sportswriter Dan Steinberg last year, Drew Frank, his coach on the state championship team, said Norwood changed his life.

"Someone told me one time when your best player and your best person are one and the same, you can have a magical season, and that's what we had with Gabe," Frank said.

He told Steinberg that Norwood helped him understand what's most important about the game.

"Don't get wrapped up in wins and losses, enjoy the journey and just have fun," Frank said.

This week, Norwood has been having his share of fun.

"It's always an honor to represent the country. There's a little bit of pressure because we're the favorites, but certainly, we're having fun here," Norwood said.

hope he makes it. Playing on the nba or europe than the pba would make him a lot better player and asset to the national team. If ever this happens He'd be the 2nd fil am to play in the nba and if japeth and gian makes it, we'd be having 3 pinoys there.

Go Gabe! Follow you dream! Make it to the NBA!

Go Gabe! Follow you dream! Make it to the NBA!

It will be one of the most rewarding achievements in his career and for the Philippines if he makes it to the nba. I saw Norwood in one of the rp team's pratices at the arena in San Juan. He has great work ethic, and even in practice he was jamming the hoops! I hope he plays in europe or in the states once he finishes he's sea games stint, to further polish he's skills and get more experience coz this talent is one of a kind. The competitive level in the pba is good but will all due respect to the pba, Gabe's career growth would blossom more if he plays in high calider leagues abroad, e.g. the european leagues, nbdl or cba perhaps. Because in the pba he might play the 3 or some 4. haha let him concentrate on playing the 1 oo 2 position. He'll wreck more havock if he plays those spots, especially come the next asian championships or asian games. Good luck to Gabe "Phi(l) Slamma Jamma" Norwood!

if only he could prove himself a lot more internationally and drew attention. he didnt perform well during the fiba asia tournament. that couldve been a jump start for him. anyways i still hope he gets into the NBA!

with his skills and talent now... i doubt if he could make it to the NBA

yeah agree. no doubt he is a very good basketball player. however, if we take into consideration on what happened to his 3 prolific teammates at GMU namely:
Jai Lewis 6'7" Power Forward
Tony Skinn 6'1" Point Guard
Lamar Butler 6'2" Guard

They never made it to the NBA. They settled in playing in Europe for measly average pay of $8,000. How much more Gabe who was just an average player in their team though he used to start on some games for them?

Gabe's Position in PBL is PG/SG

He once recorded triple doubles at least back to back.

His stint in RP team last july's FIBA asia is his learning experience. He play bad defense against Rashiem Wright of Jordan. Well he learn from that experience. The next time The RPNT will play in FIBA ASIA championship he learn some of his lesson. Being Fresh grad and the youngest player of RPNT he's learning from the PBA's Best. He did some mistakes but those mistakes will not happen again for him

Try his luck next year's Summer league teams in NBA. He knows. He might play at NBA or in NBDL. He'll be tougher player once he donned the RP jersey. His skills might further Develop.

Gabe is one of the few Fil-foreigners who have played for US NCAA Div. 1 teams that have made it far in that tournament.

However, let's not forget that Gabe's numbers have not been that impressive there. There are a lot of other US NCAA Div. 1 players who have not made it to the NBA, hence Gabe's chances are not very good.

Not that I am dissing Gabe or something, but just wanted to keep our expectations of him to more realistic levels.

I think he will make a great PBA player, though, & in that regard, his future is set as far as the PBA is concerned.

If he's not lucky in trying out for NBA teams, he must try some other leagues in US like NBDL, CBA, IBL, USBL. Outside US and RP, Try NBL in Australia.

amen to that. i just mentioned that his 3 prolific team mates on that team didn't even make it to the NBA and not even doing good in the european circuit.

maybe those teammates became good players because of the playmaking skills of Gabe...Gabe drawing attention, moving the ball well, passing it to the right spot, thus giving his teammates a lot of room to score.

i think you failed to watch the 2006 NCAA tournament because you didn't see how Gabe was used by Coach Larranaga. his 3 teammates:

Jai Lewis 6'7" Power Forward
Tony Skinn 6'1" Point Guard
Lamar Butler 6'2" Guard

were the focal point of all their plays while Gabe sometimes came off the bench. Norwood only became famous when he receive an award from his school for being dedicated to sports and his studies.

Gabe's 2006 NCAA Stats

2006-07 George Mason Patriots 33 18.7 1.6 0.7 6.7 1.8 3.6 41 1 0 1

Do you think NBA teams and scouts will consider that stats to play for their teasms? Gabe is a good player but he's ability is not in the level of a current average NBA player. I am a fan of Norwood but I don't dream that much that he can make it to the NBA.

I am still hoping for him to play outside of the PHILIPPINES, his talent will be wasted and will not develop if he plays here...

if a Gabe Norwood can't make it to the NBA how much more of a Japeth Aguilar, whose team has 50-50 chance to make it to the NCAA tournament...

Japeth's chance to make it to the NBA if scouts are impressed w/ his defense..

oh, Gabe is the main defender of George Mason isn't it? He is the leader of blocks and steals.. so what are the chances to make it to the NBA?

Below are the top 50 scorers in NCAA's 2006-07 season where Gabe played his last year at GMU. Emboldened names are the ones being drafted or was able to play in the NBA this season as a rookie. Some of them remained in college but the seniors and those who declared and did not withdraw, played elsewhere. Do you think Norwood has a chance?
