i think its better to have a bunch of athletic and beefed up 6'6 than have a 7'0 lanky players. thats my opinion though.

how about you guys, would you rather have a 6'6 athletic bull-strong player or a lanky 7'0?

Whichever is close to reality for now we have 6'4-6'5ers train them to be skillfull. We have an athletically gifted but motor/raw limited 6'9 player. Slow 6'10 and soft 7 footer..we just maximize what resources we already had..

At that age, I'd rather have the thin seven-footer. A 6'6" player of that caliber will always be a game-changer at the U-18 level, but a thin 7'0" can always be improved. The 6'6" might reach his plateau by his early 20s. Then again, there are players like Charles Barkley.

depending on how athletic our 6'6 guys are.Remember they still have 6 inches disadvantage or maybe more depending on the wing span of the opponent. If those 6'6 guys has at least 40 inch vertical leap then why not..Height will always be might,it's a good start then they could train the guy to be extra athletic, teach him some basketball smarts and of course the basics. While the shorter guy has to double his effort in training and on he actual game.Lebron vs Yao Ming? of course everyone would go for Lebron but you have to think,How many Lebron James could the Philippines offer?

Do we even have, athletic, bull-strong 6'6" players?

I think that since this is Basektball, then the taller is always better. The taller you are, the higher level of play you can reach, like the NBA.

well for me i think we will be having a couple of those coming specially from the next gen players.

depends on how many 6'6 and what the skill is of the lanky player. outside of that, do we really have those in the pipe for the next 5 years? in the previous posts it seems anyone going above 6'3 posters here wants then to have guard like skills. given that, we will be left with no really post threat. i'll be happy if we have a robin lopez type player alongside Marcus then a 6'6 athletic bull strong player being forced to mix it up inside. that description is like melo during his stint in the US national team. hahahaha

i agree. my only point here is that we are training taller players to play relatively small positions just to be at par with our international counterpart. though we have shortage(pun intended) for our frontline, we should develop a good program to teach those with height but not that much athleticism proper post skills. having a good 6'6 post player together with the growing wings we have is a whole lot better than having good wing with unpolished bigmen. i dont know when we will have another batch of slaughter, fajardo, and AVO in college in the next 5 years so whoever we can teach, lets do it. of course, easier said than done with all the politics in the sport in our country.

I agree

I saw a new pictures of Kobe Paras and it looks like he is already taller than his older brother andre. On the same picture, kobe paras almost the same height of his dad Benjie and he is only 15 years old. I hope he will get a good training because he is the future big men of RP team. Imagine 6'8-6'9 version of benjie paras or even better,he will dominate asia.

Kobe plays the 2-3 position and I hope he sticks to that! DLSU has a great talent coming their way in 2 years

He could have had his growth spurt already and could reach 6'6 the most. Tall enough though for the 2-3 positions.

I feel Philippine basketball has a temporary crisis of big men right now. Mark Pingris is a bit fragile with injuries, plus that SMC issue which keeps him from participating consistently with the National team. Kelly Williams is sick, and has been a shadow of his former self. Sonny Thoss has proven to be ineffective against taller, heftier and more talented opponents, his weakness of having limited coordination exposed.

Ranidel De Ocampo is okay, but he's not really much of an inside presence, getting his shots from the outside. I think this is because he's not really that tall. I have seen him up close numerous times at the SM Mall of Asia, and what strikes me about him is his lack of imposing height. He is tall, definitely, but not imposingly tall, and if I were to guess his height, he would be closer to 6'3" than 6'5". I could be wrong, if somebody has the PBA's official measurements of him, kindly share it with the link. But if he's really not that tall, that would explain his being hampered in the paint at the international level.

Worst is the fact that the college big men standouts have failed in the PBA. Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Noy Baclao and Rico Maierhoffer were expected to be the next wave of big men to succeed the oldies, but that has not happened, and one wonders if that will ever happen.

So the veterans are spotty, time to look at the next younger players to see if they can help out the National team. Junemar Fajardo is going along well, albeit at a slow pace in the PBA. Greg Slaughter and Ian Sanggalang are crucial as I am hoping they will provide the salvation of the National team soon. If they don't, then we could be stuck in the plateau we have now until the next batch of big men arrive, and I don't see much in the horizon after these three. Locally, anyway. Maybe Tautaa or Standardinger, but those are big question marks also.

The Lasalle big men will be available re AVO and that Paredes guy . . . .But you are right, I don't see any bigs coming out of our youth programs.

The problem with our bigmen is that they're not athletic enough. I highly doubt AVO will be able to significantly contribute to Gilas. He's tall but he has poor perimeter shooting. Same is true with Norbs.

Tratter is a possible bigman for Gilas, and he actually plays the PF position if I'm not mistaken. Then again it would be a while before he'll be able to suit up for the NT since DLSU is expected to maximize the 5 year playable period. In the next five years there will be a wave of very big Fil-Ams coming our way. It's just a matter of convincing these players to stay in the Philippines after graduation.
