This is what happened if you expose your 13 y.o. 6'6 son to social media. like the case of this kid Owen Calanasan

Commenters going to comment like:

"Wag kang Bano"
"Train like a modern big"
"Mag train ka maging guard"
or "You the Next Kai"

to be fair, the first comment is great advice!

Been thinking: Would Balti continue his development into a versatile switchy defender at the 4 spot if he joins the PBA, or would he be asked to bulk up to be able to defend big, hefty centers?

He's already kinda unique defensively as a big who can switch to the perimeter, which has been valuable to us internationally. Needs to keep that skillset wherever he goes.

i think it still depends where he ends. methinks he won't bulk up as i think his current weight is the most his frame could carry. guys like belo, troy, oftana, arwind didn't have to bulk up in the pba despite playing as bigs.

what i hope is that baltazar isn't forced to solely play as a traditional postplaying big.

Nah. Arwind is not a great post defender. In the early years of the Fajardo SMB he would be targeted by opposing post players. I don't know what happened but it lessened. But now and then you see him being man handled in the paint like by Troy in his last stint against SMB.

But Arwind was RSAs favorite he got a lot of leeway to chuck 3 pointers when he was still learning to shoot. He would have 1/6 or 1/9 3 pt shooting games and no one would comment on his inefficient 3 pt shooting. So I dont know if Balti will not be forced to play more on the inside in the PBA. International leagues dont have as many low post 4s and he can defend 3s. So Balti has a chance to get decent PT internationally.

never said arwind, or any of the guys i mentioned, were great post defending players. i was just pointing out that not all lanky forward centers were forced to bulk up. those guys i mentioned are just examples of forward/centers who were not forced to bulk up to defend heftier bigs.

kai under DDO system? to give you idea watch kai’s u17 games and the “coach” of that team is the son of current coach of gilas and observe how the son uses kai..

Good point bro. Makes me think that if some posters here have been critical about coach Tab as they feel Tab hasn't utilized Kai enough in Kai's stint with Gilas senior team last year, then what makes these posters think that Kai would be utilized better under Chot Reyes with his DDO system?

Yes. What Im saying all of those guys have weaknessess. Arwind was able to have success at PF because he played with June Mar. Troy is inconsistent even in the PBA. Oftana plays 3/4 but he is still a rookie. You are right Balti has a chance to keep his current physique but he cannot be main guy. Maybe the 2nd or 3rd guy. Rosser might be more useful than him in the PBA scene. If he will be taken as 1st pick there will be a lot of pressure for him to produce. Just look at Belo. He added muscle took the pounding and blew out his knee.

yup, he can enjoy major success in the pba despite not being the "top dog" of a team. i mean, scottie isn't ginebra's main local. arguably, he's not even the 2nd or 3rd. but he's probably the MVP the season and arguably the new face of the league hehe. if he turns out to be a taller RDO or a more offensively polished Pingris, i would consider taht a major win.

I actually like Coach tab as a coach. Very limited sample space to judge on how he used Kai. Since, Kai was just a late minute hugot last year.

But getting that aside. I wonder how Coach Chot will use Kai. If he will let Kai play as a Modern Big, or just an Abangers. Also, if he will give Kai Post touches.

Josh Reyes Make Kai an Abager when he was young and under develop. I wonder if the more experienced father coach will do the same mistake to the new and improved Kai.

We may see Kai this Fiba Asia Cup. But if not, (due to Nba or NBL or G league or Overseas Commitments)

maybe we will see Kai wearing gilas uniform. In 2023 pa.

Again for those who shortchanged Tab. He allowed Kai to attack Korea's NP in various ways. He was allowed to attack on the 2nd break. He was allowed to face up. Actually we saw Kai do more things on offense than in several games playing for Adelaide. Kai was able to put the ball on the floor and make plays. If that is not maximizing Kai, I don't know what is. Again, Kai's problem is stamina so you can't blame Tab for limiting his minutes when it was obvious his defense was getting slower the longer he was on the floor.

Yet some people feel coach Tab didn't maximize Kai's potential (kulang daw sa playing time si Kai) & they also think that Kai wasn't getting enough touches under coach Tab.

Maybe thess fans think that coach Tab should have given Kai around 32 mins. playing time & be the focal point of Gilas offense.

I think that will come for Kai. Maybe in 2027 WC.

2023, maybe the offense will revolve around JC(if NP), Dwight, Thirdy, Kiefer, and thirdy. DDO e.

But I hope Kai will be involved ofc. Especially if Kai will be at least an NBA or G league player already that time. (Sa 2023 ah)

I think Kai should play 32 minutes a game, foul trouble permitting. I expect Clarkson to be our NP so Kai needs to be able to take most the center minutes.

You're referring to a Kai Sotto playing for Gilas in next year's FIBA World Cup, right?

Well, when I said "Maybe these fans think that coach Tab should have given Kai around 32 mins. playing time", I was referring to Kai's stint with Gilas during last year's 3rd window qualifiers of the 2022 (originally 2021) FIBA Asia Cup.

Coach Tab had a reason for not giving Kai lots of playing time in that window as Kai had limited practice with the team prior to that window. It just so happened that some posters here whined so much & hit hard on coach Tab as maybe they think that Kai should have gotten about 32 mins per game & should have also been given lots of touches .

I want to see this in Fiba Asia Cup if (Kai will play there instead of summer league)

And obviously in 2023. If JC will be the NP.

Let's see how will Kai responds.

More than unfamiliarity it was Kai's stamina that limited his floor time. Tab actually didn't commit to giving Kai a slot immediately because he only had 1 practice. But his ability to pick up the system convinced Tab. He had the license to attack Ratliffe any which way he way he wanted. This was the only time I saw Kai bring up the ball and attack immediately. Some complain he was not passed to when he was sealing. He lacks the strength to make those plays even when sealing. Worse they could tap the ball for a turnover. The best idea really was for him to use his handles and attack from outside. Then use his length to have multiple follow-up attempts.

With the way things are going, it looks like 6’7 is going to be the average local big for this decade.

That means we will have to stick to PF/C naturalized players like Ange or Andray.

6'7" bigs won't be a problem if they're taught to play the power forward position, like Carl Tamayo and Kevin Quiambao were. Even Justine Baltazar. Train them for mobility first and not heft.

well, the writer of Hardcourt (PBA Annual) disparaged RDO, YDO and Mick Pennisi for playing in the perimeter despite their height and the fact they are bigmen.

i don't know but the mentality of Filipinos in playing basketball is dragging the country down in terms of development.

I agree, we are very immature in terms of keeping up with how the game has evolved. But going back to regular programming, i hope we can see through the devt of this current crop of batang gilas where they can grow in the game together. I have high hopes.

wow, they're still publishing those? last time i bought the PBA annual was way back early 2000s.

I hope that our mentality in terms of bigmen will change after a generation, especially that kids today are exposed to modern bigs in the NBA like Embiid, Jokic KAT, KP. Too bad, our coaches would still emphasize on the traditional post/back to the basket set up as its a easy win especially with the dearth of bigmen and the emphasize of coaches/managers on job security

The post should be a weapon for a few bigmen, but that shouldn't come at the cost of reps at PF. Our best 6'7"-6'8" bigs, ideally should be able to play at least both bigman positions, like for example Carl Tamayo. Not mobile enough for 3, but is a natural 4 for FIBA.

Ayun, they can use the modern bigs like Embiid and Jokić as a template. They shoot threes, yes, but are kinda mobile, and mix-and-match the shooting and their post-up game.
