Future Big Men Of Philippine Basketball

A strong PnR big like Bam Adebayo would do wonders for us given that we will be guard-centric for years to come and 6'7-6'9 are the most probable height ranges of our future big men.

Just look at Korea's bigs since the Seo Jang-Hoon and Kim Joo-Sung days. Very reliable PnR bigs with a soft touch from the perimeter.

I notice our local bigs are still stuck with the dominant centre mindset. Very unrealistic as we are unlikely to produce 7'1 wide-bodied bigs in generations to come. Hell, even West Asian teams like Iran, Lebanon, and Jordan are struggling to produce these types of centers.

I think coach tab"s system is balanced. it is not like coach chot's dribble drive that is really a major "guard centric"

Well, we have Kai and Aj who can do both postup and PNRs. So not much of a problem in Bigs. hehe.

As for the PF, it can be varied to Stretch, PNR Roller, or Low Post Players.

Alongside his good PnR play, Bam is also a versatile player. He can switch out and defend the perimeter, shoot a few midrange jumpers, and handle and pass the ball.

A big that has his skillset, especially on defense, would be an asset to the Gilas program.

Just rewatched Yeshkel and Hoops Highlights breakdown of Coach tab's System.

For Bigs, these are I think neccesary on coach tab's System.

Offense

1. Have an outside Shot - The Centers and Power Forwads must be a pick and pop threat. I noticed in coach tab's system that Kai, Kouame, Baltazar, Tamayo, and Go have a lot of open looks outside.

2. Can attack/drive from the perimeter - Now, if you are not a very good shooter, you must be capable of Attacking From the Perimeter. (As a Big)

3. Knows How and When to Screen, Roll, and Cut - Self explanatory

4. Capable Low Post Big - especially if there is a mismatch

5. Rebounding - Self explanatory. "Whoever controls the rebound, controls the game"

Defense

1. Capable to Decent PNR Defender - Common International ploy is attacking the Bigs by Guards in PNR. Switching I think is still the best defense to pnr, but you need switchable players for that.

2. Rim Protection and Intimidation - Of course. One of the main job.

Luis Scola too.

Neither are necessary tall for their position but they are very effective.

I don't think we have the genes to produce a player like Bam. Even though he's only 6'8 he has freakish measurables and is very athletic. We've seen how even the seemingly ordinary pinoy sized NBA player like Barea run through even our supposedly strong and athletic guys. And Bam is on a different tier athletically..

A player like Bam would probably be an NP.

Players with the height and frame of Almazan, Erram, Troy could be developed into this kind of player. Reliable roll men that could be good finishers.

We have plenty of 6'6"-6'8" bigs. Instead of relegating them to rebounding and paint protection, we might as well try to use them, and in the process develop agility before adding weight.

I forgot about Scola, man. He had great moves inside, which compensated for his lack of height (although he's OK-sized for the 4-spot).

He's another big for our up-and-coming bigs to learn from. Skill and footwork in the post than pure power. Hopefully Carl Tamayo can develop to be a similar player. Maybe kids like Seven Gagate as well as Brix Versoza, Donjie Cornejo.

So, We have 2 17 yrs old Vaccination Discoveries. Hehe.

Brix Verzosa - 6'8 17 yrs old from Cotabato. Commited now to play for San Beda High School. ( I read Brix is only Grade 11)

Donjie Cornesio - 6'7 17 yrs old from Bohol. (Being offered/recruited by EAC and FEU). Looks like EAC is leading the bid. But we never know, I think more schools will try to get him if he don't commit to any school yet.

LOL. I feel like we will discover more in Vaccination areas. These are 2 prospects in span of 2 days.lmao

Here's a video on these two prospects, with a special appearance from Drex delos Reyes:

Says here that Brix would go to Beda by this month to continue his training.

Donjie, on the other hand, idolized Steph Curry, and he liked to shoot, and he just learned that he has to operate down low due to his size, and he had to learn post moves.

Take his projected height with a grain of salt, but if this kid would end up as a 6'8-6'9 guy I think he'll be a very serviceable big forward (even in FIBA windows) if developed correctly

The mere fact that the community coach want to inculcate to the kid to dominate the inside because he wants the lad to maximize his presence within the paint only proves the basketball philosophy/perspective of this country on the grassroot level…the so called Leo Austria approach on Junemar…oh well.

To me, it's fine that a 6'7"-6'8" big learns to play inside, as long as he can play PF. A post game can be an asset, especially when matched up against more finesse bigs.

A problem will occur if that kid can only play center, and that will eat into his playing time, since imports in college and the PBA Commissioner's Cup usually play center.

The thing here is if the kid turns into the usual traditional big guy who doesn’t know how to dribble the ball to save his life in front of a solid defender, doesn’t know how to shoot mid-range jumpers and freethrows ala Rich Alvarez, Richard Del Rosario and Enrico Villanueva who until their last PBA games had a horrible work rate at that area. I hope that community coach reads my posted remarks and not be onion skinned but if the handlers only wants the kid to play only in the PBA, who we are to dictate his Jurrasic way of training but if their plan is to consider playing for Gilas on a regular basis then train the kid how to dribble the ball to save his life and his perimeter game..that’s my take on that kid.

Just develop all. Both perimeter and Inside Game.

His height and build will be useless if he do not have inside game too.

But yes, Like In US or Europe, Any height of a player must be taught all skills. both perimeter and inside

Yeah, teach them all skills. General rule for any position. However, in my opinion, as I repeatedly say, a 6'7"+ big can be a low-post guy so long as he can play the 4, traditional man or more modern, perimeter-oriented.

As for the kid, OK naman as a post guy. Look at his build. And he's probably mobile enough to play PF and can grow up to 6'7"-6'8".

He's gonna play for the Letran Squires this coming NCAA season, based on the video I just sent. The Letran senior team has a deep bigman roster.

Hope he gets developed to play both 4 and 5, not just the center position. A mixture of Muyang (low-post skill, midrange jumper) and Fajarito (ability to play both 4 and 5, can run the break and handle a little) would be nice.

Another issue we have to clean up in developing PnR bigs is spacing. Either the other guys' shooting isn't respectable enough, or they tend to clog the lane, forcing the big to try to create his own shot inside.

We may need to make PnR easier for bigs whose skillset is better tailored for PnR than post play.

Example of making PnR easier is Gilas PnR plays with Kouame. I mean, the PnR is better spaced, and the lane is less clogged. Easier to score or kick out.

I think we can develop Ladis Lepalam and Kemark Cariño to be good PnR finishers in the same mold. Hopefully we can use them as good PnR roll men in the future, and find them. Jimly Lantaya can also be a similar player.

We just need to help them finish easier in the PnR so they don't have to create their own shots as much.

Another video on young bigs:

Featured are Adrian Sollano, Ramon Salvoro, Mason Amos, Seven Gagate, and Kobe Demisana.

Sollano - training as an SF; 6'7" at 16, can grow up to 6'8" or as high as 6'10"
Salvoro - training as an SF, not a traditional big
Gagate - more of an inside operator, but learning how to operate outside as well
Demisana - almost 6'9" according to the video; decent handle and passing, can operate from the perimeter; however these days just limited to drills and can't play 5v5

This YouTuber reiterated his wish for SBP to have a training camp, although it's not just for bigs.

I hope these kids eventually become Gilas material and develop to their fullest potential.

I think Sollano, Salvoro, and Demisana could be a Justine Baltazar type with better handles. Hope they can exhibit versatility on defense as well.

Amos could be a Fil-Am version of Tamayo.

Gagate can be a throwback low-post PF/C who happens to have a perimeter jumper, somewhat like Eric Menk with a better 3-point shot.

So, all these kids are eligible for the FIBA Asia U18 tournament. Hopefully they can show out for that, or at least make the training pool.

Um am I the only one who can see some similarities on these boys' facial features? I hope they don't have any hormonal problems

Hope it's just because they're thin.

However, I think Gagate's not likely to have hormonal problems. He doesn't look like he moves like someone who has gigantism.

Salvoro and Demisana. Looks like. They have that cleff Chin.

But yeah, I hope that do not affect their game.

Even Gagate and Sollano looks a bit similar to me but at least they have good builts and not as thin as Salvoro and Demisana.

I know most Ibners preached and favors small ball. But a part of me that these Big Men are proving their worth in this pace and space game era of basketball.

After monster performances by Joker and Embiid tonight, I decided to check their, and other nba big men season stats so far. And here they are:

**Big Men Stats**

**Giannis** - 28.6ppg, 11.3rpg, 6.1apg, 1spg, 1.5bpg, 53.3% FG, 28.8% 3pt FG, 71.6% FT

**Embiid** - 28ppg, 10.6rpg, 4.2 apg, 1.1 spg, 1.4 bpg, 49.4% FG, 37.5% 3pt FG, 81.7% FT

**Jokic**- 25.9ppg, 13.9rpg, 7.4apg, 1.4spg, 0.8bpg, 56.9% FG, 39.7% 3pt FG, 78.9% FT.

**KAT** - 24.3ppg, 9.2rpg, 3.7apg, 1.1spg, 1.2bpg, 51.9% FG, 40.8% 3pt FG, 80.7% FT

**Porzingis** - 20.2ppg, 7.9rpg, 2.2apg, 0.8spg, 1.7 bpg, 44.2% FG, 35.4% 3pt FG, 87.9% FT

**Bam Adebayo** - 18.6ppg, 10.2rpg, 3.2apg, 1.3spg, 0.5bpg, 51.7% FG, 75.4% FT

**Jonas Valunciunas** - 18.4ppg, 12rpg, 2.4apg, 0.5spg, 0.9bpg, 52.2% FG, 42.4% 3pt FG, 82.3% FT

**Ayton** - 16.8ppg, 10.6rpg, 1.5apg, 0.8spg,0.8bpg, 63.7% FG, 71.3% FT

**Gobert** - 15.9ppg, 15rpg, 1.1apg, 0.8spg, 2.3bpg, 71.3% FG, 68.6% FT

Their Size, Mobility, Versatility, Athleticism, and Shooting(For some of them) makes them still dominant or useful in this basketball age.

Vučević is among that company as well, although his numbers and efficiency are down. 16.3 PPG, 11.1 RPG, 3.5 APG, 1.1 SPG, 1.2 BPG, 43.9% FG (32.8% 3PT), 71.4% FT.

Jarrett Allen also belongs there. 16.3 PPG, 10.9 RPG, 1.4 BPG 69.5% FG, 69.7% FT.

Evan Mobley is an up-and-coming big as well.

I'm one of the small-ball advocates, but only in the Philippine basketball setting, and in developing players. That said, nice to see that the bigs are back. Post play is becoming a staple for some teams, too, and bigs are getting the ball on PnR.

Would like to see a Filipino version of Embiid, but able to play the 4 position. A 6'7"-6'8" PF/C with Embiid's skillset would be nice to see. It's fine if that Filipino ain't as athletic and tall as Embiid, just his skillset. Ability to post-up, shoot, defend the paint, and pass.

Jokić could also be a model for 6'7"-6'8" Pinoy bigs. Good handle, can post, pass, and use his instincts to anticipate PnR passes, which is why he averages over 1 steal a game.

Some more 6'7"-6'8" Filipino bigs are more suited as cutters, lob threats, or PnP threats. Bam, Porzingis, and Allen are the play styles they should be looking at. We'll also have to make PnR easier for them, though, by spacing the floor. Just ability to finish and skill in the PnR is enough, as the athleticism and length of Bam, Allen, and Porzingis isn't realistic at this point.
