To be honest, Matt may not have an opportunity to play for Gilas. Oyr Bigs are getting stacked. Though, I hope he stayed for us rather than Japan in National Team.hehw

It is the same thing why Jericho Cruz ultimately chose to play Guam over Gilas - because the guard position is already stacked that Gilas does not need his services.

We can really say that a player is sayang if he is like Jalen Green, Kemaka Hepa or Sage Tolentino.

Probably just me but non-homegrowns aren’t sayang to me. They were never ours to begin with. Usually parang fallback na lang ang pinas, if they did have the option to play for their home country (not their parent’s home country) but they still choose us it’s like they’re doing us a favor. I see no reason for them to choose the PH. Ang sayang homegrowns like Wesley So or Yuka Saso. But I get it though, sayang because of their skills or potential. Dalph got invited to play for Italy but still chose the PH, don’t know if he would’ve been benched over there. Really helps that both his parents are filipino and was raised to speak Tagalog at home. I’m not sure if Hepa and Sage are also 3rd gen. I think Hawaiians have a different culture.

That 6'8-6'9 Pingris has been on my bucket list for quite a while.

We already got our 6'8 RdO in Carl Tamayo.

We just need a 6'8-6'9 Pingris.

Any takers? Money is on Geo Chiu as he already has the upper body strength. He just needs to establish his presence on the paint.

Personally Nah. He doesnt have the motor of ping. And I dont think he will ever have it. ( Would be nice if he proves me wrong)

Maybe in the future in 2030s

Mobility as well. Ping can even defend wings and guards in the perimeter.

For Geo Chiu could be developed into another Dennis Espino-type of player. Imagine a 6'10 version of Espino giving a phantom punch against some other national teams' marquee players ala Takehiko Orimo. I'm pretty sure that all those players will get erased. I'm just kidding. Hehe

A 6'6"-6'7" Ping is probably more feasible, as they're a little more mobile than 6'9" players here. At least we have some mobile 6'7"-6'8" players here. Best candidate for me might be Raven Cortez. However he plays for La Salle and hence, hard to get.

Chiu could develop to be a good two-way low-post player, though. He already has a good attitude, and fights on the block and on the boards. He just needs an offensive game, which he could still develop. Probably an Espino-type guy, which is actually good. Espino was a good two-way player. Had moves in the post and a good midrange jumper, and could protect the paint and the rim.

ofcourse, sayang sila. we could turn them into locals but we either missed them or they just don't realized the privilege of being a pinoy player especially now that pinoy players are in-demand in Asian leagues as well as NBL. per yuka saso and wesley so, no offense meant but i don't see them as sayang maybe because i am not into their sports the same way i love basketball, rugby and archery.

Arana, Basti, Cholo, Quiambao, Ice Hontiveros, Briones and Tuffin are the players in my wishlist.

Anyway, done watching some highlights to see the glimpse of Ladis Lepalam's game. My initial take about him is that his ceiling and trajectory could be like Poy Erram, which is not bad at all.

A kind of a 3 and D big who has some skill in the post. That's actually not bad. His upside might be higher than what Erram is right now, considering that Erram developed only later.

Now to get Lepalam to be able to play 4...

For one, Erram didn't get the National team training & FIBA game experience that Lepalam most likely will get at a young age. Erram was far from being a good National team prospect when he was on his early & even in the mid-20's. He's obviously a late bloomer.

To be fair to Erram, he got his opportunity late. That's kinda why he was a late bloomer. It was only when he was 26-27 when he got ample opportunities with Blackwater. Imagine na lang had he got his earlier. He might have had a higher upside, I reckon.

At least Erram is a capable Gilas player now.

As for Lepalam, at least he is getting his shot now with Gilas, far earlier than Erram. He might develop well, and increase his upside.

This YouTuber wants a training camp for our bigs to develop their skills:

He mentioned a few bigs like Justin Arana, Jimly Lantaya, Kevin Quiambao, Erlan Umpad, Raven Cortez, Arman Demigaya, and Jay Pangalangan.

Meron na nyan dati eh, Higanteng Pinoy ata or something to that effect. I don’t know why it didn’t pan out. Lack of findings/sponsorships maybe.

I remember it was Air21 sponsored program with the old BAP, Graham Lim era. I think not just big men, but also bigger guards and forwards. I don't know if they'd produced any quality player from that one-off program.

There was also that Big Man Camp led by coach Norman Black together with a No. of PBA coaches. Pero just like the other program for big men development, that too didn't continue.

Which only indicates Philipine basketball stakeholders' lack of interest in player development. Save for the Gilas-1 program under coach Rajko Toroman & the current Gilas program under Tab Baldwin, wala talaga tayong program for development of young players. We want finished products. Gusto natin bumili lang ng bumili ng ulam na luto na.

Meron, but is controlled by the mafia. aka Delta, Ateneo GS / HS, San Beda Gs/HS. La Salle GS / HS to name a few. Then they will be poached by unscrupulous agents masquerading as guardians, then will be sold to the highest bidders ( aka Universities)

It's one of the downsides of our culture. We don't look at long-term development and want quick fixes. Not just basketball really but every sports discipline faces this problem. That we rely on fil-foreigners is pretty much a testament to this.

true. there was already a program for that but the sponsor is always associated with a school and they always end up using it as a platform to recruit. so what happens is that those big men who are associated with other schools they are not allowed to participate anymore. so wala rin.

Erram showed a glimpse of his potential as a rookie with Ateneo. But with Rabeh Al-Hussaini at the helm he played just second fiddle. In his last 2 years or so with Ateneo, he played behind the shadow of the more illustrious Greg Slaughter. Truly, he didn't get much opportunity to show his potential. Hence, didn't earn much stock when he jumped to the PBA.

Imo, Our Bigs Must Develop the FF:

1. Rebounding and Blocking (Primary Role for Bigs)
2. Shooting (Either Midrange or 3pts will do)
3. Mobility ( For Defending Perimeter Players from Pick and Rolls)

Agree. Huwag ipilit ang tres kung wala talaga. A big man with a decent 15 to 18-feet jumper would be good enough.

Think of a Junmar Fajardo with a medium range jump shot of a Dennis Espino. That would be awesome. A Greg Slaughter with a mid-range game of a Japeth Aguilar would be a more lethal offensive big man.

4. Refined handles for a big, meaning he can go coast-to-coast or attack close-outs, similar to what Kai has shown from time to time.

Personally, I'm already OK if all of our bigs that stand 6'6"-6'8" are able to play the PF position, which can still be occupied by a big if needed. That way, they'll be a bit less of a liability at either spot, and will increase their chances of playing internationally. Modern big skillset or not, they'll be useful if they learn to play the 4.

However, I might give an exception if the big is 6'4"-6'5", so long as they have the talent of RDO, Patrimonio, or Ramon Fernandez, or the defensive versatility of Ping (who was also talented in his own right). Yep, their talent will have to transcend position in order to compensate for being undersized.
