Future Big Men Of Philippine Basketball

Best-case scenario is Ateneo de Manila. Tab might develop him into something like Baltazar or Tamayo, or probably (I hope I'm not reaching here) something better than both.

A 6'10" combo forward? That might be a first in Philippine basketball. Man. But at 6'7" or 6'8", that's good enough for combo forward. I think he just needs to work on his post game. Just use his length and develop some footwork.

Offensively, he could use Julius Randle and Domantas Sabonis as templates. Bigs who have perimeter skills and are good passers, but can also make a killing in the post.

He looks skinny. But he seems to have the work ethic to improve his skills. 6'11 that's Durant height. I hope he continues with his skills training.

This is where we hold an advantage over the Japanese. We're better at developing bigs. The import limits kinda help, like you had said, and I can concede that point. We just need to play our 6'6"-6'8" bigs alongside our bigger imports, and our bigs need to get used to playing the 4 (which is similar to the 5, if you look at it traditionally). Kasi, if we play our bigs behind the bigger import, wala rin, parang Japanese system na 'yan.

I agree. I mean look at the PBA, who are the players who don't have an outside shot. JMF, Greg, Gabayni. Even in UAAP and NCAA, I don't know any starters that don't have an outside shot.

Just need them to be able to play the power forward position, whether a traditional bruising 4 or a more modern, more perimeter skilled one, or maybe even both.

In as much as we would like to be optimistic that Fil-foreign young players like Caelum Harris & Mason Amos would pan out as serviceable modern day "fours" or even combo forwards for Gilas, iba pa rin ang feeling that Phi basketball can develop full-blooded Pinoy big guys with some wingmen skills or centers with perimeter skills. If trained properly & early (ASAP), Salvoro, Lantaya, Lepalam, Gagate, Demisana could be among those guys, hopefully.

Well said man, we need to start looking ahead of 2023. For now, there are no concrete plans being discussed by the SBP about beyond 2023. At least from your post we truly have a future. I hope the guys you mentioned will develop into combo forwards and etc. I am also very happy about Caelum specifically, he is ranked 27th right now in the USA based on a video I saw of him. He has a bright future ahead of him, I hope things will continue to go up for him. I hope Caelum will be in the NBA player in the future for his career and Gilas sake.

We now have the materials eh. I mean, having current & projected 6-foot-8/6-foot-9/6-foot-10 in the youth level is now common unlike 2 or 3 decades ago. I remember, during the early 90's, parang subrang big deal na talaga that we had 6-9 Marlou Aquino, 7-foot EJ Feihl, 6-9 Bonel Balingit & 6-7 Chris Bolado.

Pinoy basketball players are getting bigger & unlike those "tall" Pinoy players that we had in the 90's like Feihl, Balingit & Bolado who were slow, clumsy & not that skilled, yung mga current "tall" players natin are in the different level. Karamihan sa kanila nakakapag dribble, nakaka tira sa labas, aren't awkward or clumsy, & are mobile.

We now have the materials but what we lack is a good system. Having the current Gilas program headed by Tab Baldwin is a good start. But I feel, we still need significant improvement in the system, in particular how we develop or groom our young good size bigs. The idea here is for for the likes of Lantaya, Lepalam, Demisana, Salvoro, Gagate, etc. to join the Gilas program as early as possible. Unfortunately, some of our tall big young hopefuls are handled by the evil forces, hence they can't commit to the Gilas program as of now.

And now, we have 6'7"-6'8" players who can play the PF spot. Baltazar and Tamayo are just the beginning, but they're a great start, and both have played the 3 for Gilas.

I really hope we can train as many bigs as possible to play the forward positions, kahit 4 lang, and even a traditional 4 at that. That way we won't have as many bigs who are too short for the center position internationally, but can't play 4.

A No. of 6-9/6-10 mobile & with decent shooting center in the mold of Kim Jong-kyu, would be ok as well.

Lepalam and Gagate are with the La Salle system, and Lantaya is with Letran. That's gonna present some difficulty when Gilas asks for them.

Personally, I hope Lantaya becomes a good low-post player like Larry Muyang was. That's going to be an asset. A 6'9" guy who can post up is going to be a huge mismatch in PH basketball. I also hope he can play the 4.

^^^ Well said guys! All in all, I do hope that the SBP Gilas program will hire NBA level trainers to train these guys if ever they are part of the program. I am not sure about the trainers of Balty/Tamayo that made them capable to play the 3 and they did a hell of a job on them but if we can find better trainers of course than why not?

Only hope for the guys who cannot join the Gilas program like Jamskie addressed is that to hope that the development methods of the youth programs, college programs like La salle like IPC mentioned will finally improve. Hopefully they can hire international level trainers/NBA level trainers/Euro League Trainers to develop these guys. UP seems to be in the right direction if they will end up hiring that Foreign coach. I am sure that he will change the way UP develops players too.

Maybe SBP can talk with the handlers of Lepalam & Gagate for their possible stint with Gilas (ASAP) just like what SBP did with Justin Baltazar despite Baltazar being from La Salle? With Lantaya, maybe we'll wait nalang after he graduates from Letran before he can join Gilas (Pero para sa akin, medyo late na yun). I hope Salvoro ends up playing for Ateneo. The same goes with Demisana. I feel both Demisana & Salvoro are good enough that they can join Gilas at the early age of 18 (kahit training pa lang). I think Lepalam & Gagate would be ripe for Gilas training when they reach 19 or 20 yrs old.

Good news is, Demisana's in UP and Salvoro's in Ateneo de Cebu.

UP is actually quite national-team friendly, since they just let the GDL brothers join the Gilas pool for the Feb. 2020 window, and Tamayo and Javi joined for the June 2021 window.

Hopefully, more promising bigs go to UP or Ateneo. Good news is, UP got Demisana and Tamayo, while Ateneo got Kyle Ong. And I hope UP hires the foreign coach, or Monteverde, so they can further develop the bigs.

Going Blue, Maroon & Tamaraw would be good for Gilas prospects.

Huwag lang sila mapunta sa mga war freak - archers & knights.

I really hope that we will now continue to move forward with the development of our players. I hope that all of the basketball parties in our country will cooperate with one another! Without the unity, we will always be limited. I hope that finally all of the parties can work with one another for the betterment of Philippine Basketball. We have not 1, not 2 but a bunch of players that we can develop! We now have the pieces guys! All that is left is for the people with power (SBP,PBA,COLLEGE TEAMS and ETC) to do what's right.

SBP & Tab Baldwin being able to convince Baltazar's handlers (Delta) to allow him to train & play for Gilas was a significant achievement for Phi basketball. It showed that with good strategy & will power, SBP can circumvent the "evil" spots of Phi basketball. Ika nga eh, SBP has to learn how to sidestep a few landmines to get to its desired place.

There shouldn't be even any landmines in the first place but yes it is what is. That Baltazar move to Gilas at least is a great step towards unity! All of our best players/prospects should be available. We never know about the PBA’s commitment in the future but at least our best young prospects are going oversees with Fiba Clauses. Even Kiefer technically can play for us for November but I am not so sure about the specifics with his contract with Shiga. Baltazar’s move to Gilas also shows that we can possibly have the best young prospects commit for us in the future. Unfortunately for our Pros in the PBA, the situation is not as clear but I really hope that the SBP and the PBA can cooperate more than the Gilas Draft. If Bolick/Kiefer and the other guys can join then they should!

Whether UP or Ateneo, it's a win-win for me haha. I'm just a bit wary of UP after what happened to Will Gozum and his development. Seems like Bo could only think of using him as a C, here's to hoping the next coach is more of a visionary. Imo Gozum could have filled a Will Navarro role next to Bright at the very least.

In a perfect world, there should be no landmines. But Phi basketball is far from a perfect world. Long Hair obviously laid a lot of landmines in Phi basketball.

Goldwyn Monteverde's the new coach. I hope he can replicate what he did for Tamayo. Lina might be a start. Hopefully Monteverde can get him to play the perimeter.

I'm not a fan of either Ateneo or UP but since these schools (together with FEU) are National team friendly schools while Letran & La Salle aren't, then I won't mind that Ateneo, UP & FEU would monopolize the marque or good quality players in Phi college basketball.

Of course not that I condone such act, its just that whatever it takes to benefit Philippine basketball, National team in particular, then I'll take it.
