France NT 2009

first Parker had to go to the states so Spurs doctors could examine him, then he returned..
then Batum had to go so Portland doctors could examine him and now he will return..
what the f*ck.. do americans think we don't have good enough doctors in Europe

Noah came back to Chicago 3 weeks ago to do some weight training.

The french staff negociated to have him for 2 weeks to prepare him for the future (after all, he has zero experience of european basketball), but it never went further than that. The Bulls wanted him to spend his summer doing weight training and weight training he is doing.

Batum is supposed to come back today. He will miss today's game, but there is no real damage done yet.
I guess the Blazers probably wanted him to rest for this somehow meaningless game, just like Parker was called back only to make sure he would rest instead of playing against Italy shortly after his very minor injury. (the french staff proposed to not play Parker until the Finland game, but the Spurs didn't listen to us according to this blog)

Thank you

So, in other words, no Noah for France. For years, I have been supporting the need of a contributing big man for the French and Noah has been just the best idea for this team. Too bad he isnt gonna make it once again

Of course and although they look really good in the three games I watched them playing, Noah could be this upgrade in the paint that could get them among gold medal contenders, joining only Spain and the (hypothetically healthy and full of character questionmarks) Slovenians

Yeah, Noah would be a welcome addition to the team. He is way more needed than what I thought he would be. Both Traore and Koffi were really great this season and I expected them to make his absence forgettable.

However, Koffi really struggle to play at his level with the national team (I hope he won't be Kirksay v2.0 : a player who ruled in France, but never fulfilled all the promises we saw in him) and Traore is even below Petro in the hierarchy and doesn't play. (so far in the qualifiers, he only played the garbage time of the third game)

Without doubting the quality of Noah, which IMO is nothing more than a solid NBA center at this moment of time, Ian MAhinmi and Johan Petro are arguably decent acquisitons on the C for any NT. In addition, i think Turiaf played C vs Italy. Henceforth, i can't see why France should have quarrels at the center position.

Pretty hard to have a really good opinion about the level of our front court after playing against teams which are really weak under the rim, in comparison with the best NT's in europe.

The main issue was pointed by Collet during one press conference : we need some plays from our pf/centers in order to bring some danger inside when we are facing zone defense. And diaw can't be the only answer there, we really need some decent centers to provide screens, court vision and back to the basket plays.
We can think that collet will try to break them with his well known passing game but it's not always efficient (and it can generate many to's) and we definetly need players inside the paint that are able to create offense without struggling in defense. Even noah does not match this perfectly.

The main loss is probably moiso but hell, we can't fix what was done in the past.

Anybody know French?
What Parker said there?

I've seen this in another forum, and according to the guy who posted this link, he told smart things including self-criticism, which give hope that he'll involve more his teammates today.

He says that a 2 points win or a 4 points loss is almost the same and the more important is that the second match is at home. We need to make a big match like them at home.
For 2 days, the players are angry and vexed and we need to transform that in positive energy.
He thinks the french players inside have made a great job defensively but him and the other guy on the wings have to play much better defense.

Then he reponds to all the critics against him in the french press that he was playing alone and they have lost because of him. He says he won't change his playing style. He says that the journalists always try to find something to justify defeat but he thinks he has made the same match than against Italy when they win by 20 points. That's clear he can try to involve a bit more his partners in the beginning that's clear but he won't wait that Boris moves his ass that's clear. But he can help his partners to enter in the match that's clear and that's a part of his point guard duty, that's clear. He can show more patience in the first quarter.
(I'm just mocking a little bit a tic of Tony Parker :D )
Then he says he wasn't completly aware that his partners were not in the game because he was playing great, so even the others were giving him the ball all the time. He thinks that's his role to give easy basket to Boris and Nicolas to help them find their rythm. During the first quarter only him and Turiaf have the ball in their hands, so that's not easy for others to enter in the game. And we absolutly need Nicolas and Boris to win.
He says Florent Pietrus is the best defender they have and they need him without early fouls. Tony will put the pressure on his partners to make them take their responsabilities. He says Belgium is a good team and if other french guys don't take their responsabilities, that's finish but he has no doubt they will make a great match.

That's a quick and poor translation, sorry.

 to Florent Pietrus who has said something like this : "Except if we turn off the lights, there is no way they will come close to us."

Go Belgium. I'm mad at the way french players (except Parker) and french press treat Belgium as if we are Andorra or Feroe Islands and I hope we will give them a good lesson. Hey, let us dream again a few hours. :D
If they lose that's only because of their legendary arrogance and disdain.

Seriously, there was no arrogance from people following basketball in france, especially considering that the 1st game was right after the loss against finland.

In fact, many people here were either upset or worried about the capacity of this team to bounce back, and the 1st game did not sweep the issues.
On the other hand, belgium medias & fan always like to point out "our" supposed arrogance carefully picking the good sources (generally the pro nba morons - in the sense that they don't know sh*t about euro powerhouses or competitions - who are holding some forums in france) and they barely rely on biased articles to build up some "patriotism". The picture was quite easy to see. Still, kudos to belgium for having well prepared the game (even if scouting and aiming at parker was not the most ingenious move in basket history ^^)
Anyway france struggled, scared its fans but they will be in poland. We will see how they will advance in the competition as they will have a little advantage having participated to this qualifier. I just hope they will push enough to finish in one of the 2 1st spots before the 1/4r final, even though i think we will see a lot of surprises in this euro (poland, israel maybe, latvia mostly).

Congratulations for your win and your qualification. You have a great team, by far the best in the additional tournament of course but also extremly inconsistent. If reaching the 1/4 is really your objectif, then you are very modest especially considering that you have been very lucky with the draw.

About the rest, well you will agree that basket is not a sport that passionate large audience in France and it seems to me that the "pro NBA morons", like you call them are in fact the large majority of the limited basket-ball audience in France (or maybe the pro-A fans are just very secretives). Big french media are only interrested by the NBA so I guess they fall in the "pro NBA morons" category. Such title as "Juste une fois !" on sports.fr, isn't it contemptuous? Or is it funny ? but only for the french then.
The treatment of Basket-ball by France-télévisions is especially ridiculous. Once, their "journalists" even proclam Tony Parker was one of the three best basketball player in the world. I don't know who are the other 2 but how hilarious is that? Ronny Turiaf is in the top 10 certainly. So, I have no doubt that there is a lot of french fans who have some common sense but I doubt they are a majority. When I say these french fans speak of Belgium like Feroe islands, I'm not far from the truth.

That's again worst in Belgium of course. National team games aren't even broadcast on television and 90% of Belgians probably don't even known we have a national team in Basket-ball. So there is definitly no patriotism around the national team and by the way, there is almost no patriotism at all in Belgium. In sporting event, frenchs sing their "awful" national anthem all the time (that was again the case today) while in Belgium, most people don't even know it (including me and the former prime minister) and make fun of people who sing it.

Good luck in Poland.

Well as i said, you refer to the medias not necessary known for having specialists to treat basketball sharply.
Anyway i won't deny that we still show some arrogance in many areas (would it be sick humor or general knowledge of other teams's threats etc) but you really underestimate our lack of confidence, even for people rooting for french nt till years if not decades (considering last year and this year's unexpected losses, i don't need to develop a lot). And we know what ignorance can bring (which is why i called them "nba morons")

I won't comment the "patriot" part as belgium is a real special case but it seemed to me (from reading belgium media like lesoir & watchting a report from rtbf) that there was a special interest in your team for this qualification game against us (and your game was sold out quite fast in antwerpen). About us singing our n anthem, that's pretty common here (occurs in football, handball, & other sports) and that's more used to unit in the stadium and for ourselves than it's aimed at the opponents (if you felt like this)

Good luck as well for the future, even if you have more promises for girls basketball obviously imo (especially when hervelle, lauwers & vds will retire).

ps : i am from lemans, so we (at least the fans in who's city he played ) learnt early to respect belgium players (doum being as kind & cool outside the court as he can be fierce and sharp shooter on it).

ps : corrected a few mistakes

I also think that the celebration of the French team in the end showed that they didn't take the qualification for granted.

I must admit that it is weird to hear about countries where people don't even know the anthem...

It's probably true that most french supporters sing their national anthem without even thinking of the lyrics and aren't targetting the opposing team with it (otherwise it's scary) but still I find it quite shocking especially considering these lyrics. These lyrics were maybe relevant 200 years ago but we are in 2010 soon, we are trying to build unity in Europe and now these martials (and racists: "impure blood") lyrics are awfull and even quite disgusting, they have no place in sporting events and need to be changed. At this level, I'm sorry it's more nationalism than patriotism in my opinion.
When France is playing football match against maghreb countries, they boo it so much that you don't even hear the french national anthem anymore. I can understand why they do that and I know that some french agree it's time to change these lyrics.

It's not surprising that the lotto arena in Anvers was soldout because France is always a special match up (ambivalent feelings) and there is a public for basket-ball in Belgium. The arenas are relatively big and the attendances to belgian championship are good, way better than in Russia. But the common people haven't any interest.

Thanks for your encouragement. I think with a complete team (with VDS), we have a chance to qualify for the next eurobasket (which would be great for us). Probably the last one because as you say VDS and Doum aren't getting younger and the future don't look too bright. Let's hope for a better draw than Turkey and France.

They were taking the qualification for granted before the first match. The players recognise it in their post match declaration (cfr Nando De Colo and others also) but also in the declarations before the match as soon as Belgium qualify instead of Bosnia. Then Belgium staff enter in this game, saying qualification was impossible for Belgium even if they didn't believe that at all. Belgium staff has flattered their ego and it works. The only reason they lose against Lebanon, Finland or Belgium is because they take these teams very very lightly.
When they show respect for the team they face, they are a top 5 team in Europe but look at their results. Their attitude is very similar to team USA in the past (when they were losing).

The issue, imo, is that most of our players are "cannibalized" by the NBA (and i don't think it's limited to our country, countries without real basketball tradition suffer the same - cf germany, belgium vs m'benga or even parker for being born in belgium etc). They think nba, they eat NBA, they sleep NBA (to a certain extent ofc ^^)
Most of our best players do play there and the medias in france have an easy access to the report material (videos, itw's etc) they need to cover an event or any article/subject. Cherry on the cake, when you have your leader who is married with a famous actress or when a potential center is the son of the most appreciated french guy, you can easily draw the consequences...

We badly need much more players with some responsabilities in some of the best european teams & championship to change this kind of attitude and it will take some time for sure. But we have some prospect that might end up sooner or later in those european powerhouses. Something that will help lowering the lack of knowledge of the european players of many of our players. Something that will also contribute to our level of play and to improve our "elite pool"
I don't think i am far when i think that many times when our nba players speak with their teammates or american medias, they tend to consider that france, considering their number of players in the nba, is by definition a major powerhouse in european basketball. Ofc that's biased, but our players are young and not necessary well aware of the level of european competitions (see above)
