Italian football was always going to require a superstar to replace Roberto Baggio. It got not one, but two. Born in the mid-1970s, Alessandro Del Piero and Francesco Totti both made their Serie A debut in 1993, and this would prove the first parallel in their magnificent footballing careers.

Since, they have both given 15 years of infallible service to clubs with whom their name is synonymous. They hold the record for both appearances and goals in the respective histories of Juventus and Roma. They have won almost 150 Italy caps between them, and performed crucial functions as the Azzurri won the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™. The winners' medals they received in Berlin's Olympiastadion rest among their stunning collections of honours.

Del Piero's include five Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia, UEFA Champions League and Toyota Cup apiece, an Italian Footballer of the Year crown and a Capocannoniere. Totti's accumulation is stunning. He inspired Roma to an unexpected league triumph in 2001, and has two Coppa Italias, the European Golden Shoe and an unprecedented five Italian Footballer of the Year awards to his name.

The resplendence of these two iconic forwards brings FIFA.com to the latest topic in our 'Have Your Say' series: if hypothetically, Del Piero and Totti were to retire today, which of them would go down as the greatest player?

Del Piero by far...

Totti? Hmm..isn't this the same player who gets away with spitting on cops because they consider him a "god" ?

You clearly dont know mch about them!
I think both are great players, but to me Totti is slightly the better player.
He can do such great things and decide the game by his own. Del Piero also can do it, but sometimes he seems lost on the pitch. Totti has a great vision.
But the thing that will always shadow the career of Totti will be his behavior which is unacceptable for such a great player.

What I like about Totti is that he once collected all the jokes about his stupidity in a book and gave the money to charity. Nice act of self-irony ;)

I'd prefer Del Piero as a player, though, since he's all about the finesse. Totti is great, no doubt. He's more dynamic and physical and has a simply stunning shooting technique. But I think Del Piero has more opportunities in terms of dribbling and passing. Heck, tifosi even used to call the area where he plays "zona del Piero" :D.
Also, Del Piero has had more success overall and is now in much better shape, while Totti had like 3 awesome seasons and hasn't been dominant for like 3 years now.

Totti's behaviour might be disgraceful, but Cassano has been even worse. The Roma team with Totti, Cassano and Mexes equaled a guaranteed red card :D .

Totti is hated for his personality, but overall he's a better player than Del Piero. He's much more versatile and creative.

They are both Italians, so quite frankly both sucks. But if I have to choose I would pick Del Piero - he doesn't spit at opposing players, plus it's impressive to see him playing so well again, since he had 2-3 poor years some time ago, and majority of the pundits/fans expected him to be washed and go.

The question was "Who is a better footballer?"

Your answer is "Del Piero, because Totti spits".

Doesn't make much sense does it
