I know it's very longshot, but wouldn't it be amusing if the ones who make it to the NBA were our guards?

We don't produce that many guys above 6'8+.

So, statistically speaking, guard and wing players should be where we have the best prospects.

Bulok lang talaga ang sistema dito.

That could be true, but also statistically consider the number of competition.

Like in football, we have the size for it, but so does the rest of the whole world so the competition population suddenly just rose exponentially.

The taller the player, the lesser the competition, just like in Kai's case (roughly speaking, he has to outplay maybe 1,000 7-footers, while a 6-foot guard has to outplay maybe a million).

What we need to do is develop our few extremely tall players the correct way. They already won the genetic lottery and narrowed down their competition, it's just a matter of following through with correct development.

everyone should train as a guard first. bigs with guard skills are very hard to defend.

It’s more probable for a guard to make it since there are so many of them. Especially with a basketball crazy population, however despite this, countries with less people consistently produce nba talent. The development environment needs to be better especially at an earlier stage.

Ooh, our man has a good head on his shoulders, would open up possibilities for Remy outside basketball. he should finish it asap because his prime years are now here.

Haha So, KQ is just 6'4" (rounded). I laugh at those saying that he can play center in FIBA. Are we back to the 1980's? Tamayo can be serviceable at the 4 spot in Asia but has to go 3 against Europeans and Australians.

I knew this all along when I stood next to Mike Phillips and little me sized him up at St. Lukes. There's no way that KQ is 6'6 when I can clearly see that Phillips is taller than him on TV... and I've had 6'4 and 6'3 classmates in school decades ago. Those who insist KQ was taller than 6'4 definitely don't know anyone taller than 6'2... and I don't have to mention what I think about the Philippine Star and its perennial bullshitter.

Now we gotta unfortunately thank Chot freaking Reyes for taking KQ out of the post and on to the wing. Seeing those UAAP juniors clips of Kai's AHS years vs a stacked NUNS team with Tamayo, Quiambao, and Abadiano... they were really hell-bent or tiring Sotto even if it meant attacking the basket and getting stuffed. I'm convinced if nobody saw how versatile KQ was for those makeshift Gilas teams under Chot, KQ would have been another Prince Rivero.

Well I remember him being listed at 6'8 and people were debating what his real height is. Most pegged him at around 6'5 to 6'6. Being lest than 6'4 though he would really have to play the wing. Even the much maligned Rosario was measured at 6'5 something

KBL officially measured him at 6' 4.75"... someone "rounds" it off to 6'4" (yep someone rounded off 475 to 400)...and now he's less than 6'4"

Most level-headed people had him at 6'5" (which turns out to be pretty close and is probably the case after a stretching session). Meanwhile, no one's bothering to measure/mention his wingspan and hand size.

No the source of this corrected himself. It is now 6’3.75. He’s just 6’4. Carls latest info is 6’6.5. A bit taller from the previous statement a little over 6’6.

Carl’s height makes sense I think given Balti’s PBA measurement is 6’6.75. Balti looks shorter than Carl when they are side by side. I think Balti when measured standing up willl be shorter than 6’6.5.

Then if that's accurate then yes, he's less than 6'4".

For me though, hopefully someone measures his wingspan and hand size. Those are more impactful.

It will be difficult to justify putting a 6'4" guy at 4.

Exception is if he has the physical attributes, defensive versatility, and motor of Marc Pingris, and maybe having the offensive versatility of Ranidel de Ocampo.

When coach Tim said that KQ is so versatile that he can play as a guard, wingman & as a big man, I think such statement was just a hyperbole & should not be taken literally.

I don't think KQ has the quickness & the handles to play as either a point guard or shooting guard. In Philippine college & our domestic leagues KQ can play as a 4 & perhaps even as a center. But in the FIBA game, he would be undersized to play as a four, moreso the center position. Perhaps against some Asian teams with not so big/tall big men like Taiwan, Bahrain, UAE, KQ can play the four for Gilas.

So for me, KQ's most comfortable position in the FIBA game would be the 3 spot or the small forward position. His improved 3-pt shooting is his calling card playing in that position. I hope KQ's quickness & laterals are good enough for the 3 spot.

Handsize and wingspan will only really matter if the one who has the long arms plays against others whose heights do not dwarf him. KQ at 6'4-6'5 can guard guys up to 6'8. But beyond that is asking for trouble. Chito Loyzaga against that North Korean will show that. Watch the Yeshkel breakdown. Chito's defense was spectacular when he was able to irritate the North Korean and have him not get position. But those moments when the North Korean giant got the ball in the right position meant an easy basket. It is actually a combination of height, wingspan, strength, and handsize. No way KQ is gonna bother Zhou Qi. That is why an eligible QMB is a must because of his combination of size and wingspan. Commentators have even used the word Pterodactyl to describe QMB.

Who are the players he's competing with at the 3 spot? Ball handling and defence IMO are his bigger question marks.
