Filipino Players in Foreign Leagues

When Thirdy entertained the idea of going abroad years ago, the goal for him was to be available for FIBA competitions while developing his game... that was before the SEA Games Silver and he hasn't been called up since. With Cone and this SBP, it's clear that just like Abando and a host of others, they're not on the same boat as a Dwight, Kai, Edu or even Carl and KQ for that matter if they end up abroad. Does he have a legit shot of making a Gilas squad? Probably not. Do things change if he's in the PBA? Depends where he ends up. If this deal with BC Dubai pushes through, it still won't change the fact that he's not preferred for international competition despite being the most exposed to it.

Thirdy's talent is not in question but his fit is.

Add to that their loss to Indonesia with his brother. People seemed to have lost faith in them. It's those moments where they should have stepped up.

But yeah.. He's just 27 years old and he can still prove SBP that he's worthy of inclusion. I'm rooting for him.

"Be so good they can't ignore you."

Who knows, he might be the guy UAE will recruit for their national team that it should be for Quiambao.. if UAE recruit him, if I were thirdy then I will accept it without any hesitation...

He already represented us in FIBA competitions.

Can he even change allegiance?

I know you can if you only did at U19 level.

Thirdy's handles as well as where majority of his points come from (inside the paint) are reasons I wouldn't consider him.

Just watch his scout videos, majority ng mga attempts nya ay turn around post up plays against bigger opponents.

That and CTC's premium on size means Thirdy has to compete with Dwight and Newsome for a guard spot. Very hard kasi marami ng players in the 6'0-6'4 who can play it better than him.

That's true. Even if Thirdy plays in the Euroleague, if CTC deems him not fit for the system it is what it is.

Even France cut their NBA players in favor of European league players mainly because of fit.

Eric Gordon and now Thon Maker did it.. and with UAE money plus they are under "developing basketball nation", this is possible.. UAE basketball is not yet a threat anyway, so no one bats an eye if they did it... Thirdy can stay atleast 5 years in Dubai for residency...

Pump the brakes and pardon me for not backreading about this earlier.

Who said they were playing in the Euroleague or even the Eurocup? I couldn't find any reputable source that says they are (unless your English comprehension is so bad, but that's not uncommon here) other than some guy's basketball blog. If that's your source, I'll come back to this post in September because it's another layer of politics with TV rights and "long term licenses" involved that I won't pretend to understand. The Euroleague that we think we know has 13 permanent clubs that play in their own countries while the rest is given to whoever places in the Adriatic Basketball Association League plus those who do well in the Eurocup.

BC Dubai will be an ABA League expansion club that will play home games in Dubai and away games in the former Yugoslavia (Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia). That's not even half of Europe. They can get relegated to their 2nd Division exaclty like the B.League and have a Domestic Cup exactly like the Emperor's Cup where those 2nd Division clubs play ABA League clubs for an old trophy like European football in knockout-tournamet bracket format.

In that league, they'll have to earn the right to play in the Eurocup or Euroleague. Red Star (Crvena Zvezda) and Partizan almost always are 1 and 2 giving them Euroleague auto wildcard slots while Budućnost of Montenegro and Cedevita Olimpija of Slovenia got 3rd and 4th giving them Eurocup slots this year... those other eleven teams that don't win a lot produced the likes of Jokic, Boban, Kukoc, Bodiroga, and Petrovic as youth team players and get minutes as teenagers playing with grown men before they're scouted to play elsewhere.

it's blatant online, i think the common pinoy cannot distinguish the difference between the actual Euroleague and a European league that is why a lot of them think that Thirdy will play in the Euroleague instead of a European league

the average pinoy basketball fan thinks the euroleague is an actual league, like europe's nba.

IMO PH should also adopt a relegation system. 2 worst teams in PBA are relegated to the MPBL, 2 best MPBL teams get promoted to the PBA. Prevents tanking and farm team practices to proliferate

The MPBL is a different corporate entity.

What you may be suggesting is that the PBA should first create a relegation division. They cannot relegate a PBA team to a non-PBA owned entity or corporation.

I know. it's just a concept of what PBA might want to adopt to add spice and excitement to the league. these two separate entities co-existing is good for Philippine basketball but I hope someday they find a way to merge, bring high level professional basketball to the masses in provinces and massive gate attendance every game.
