Filipino Players in Foreign Leagues

Juan buffed way too soon. Common trend for guards now is putting premium on speed/quickness rather than heft. Look at how Pinto and Banchero opted to be lighter. They were not overweight a la Paul Lee but they sacrificed some muscle mass for increased mobility. The way the game is played today (fast paced ball and player movements), I think Juan is better off 10-15 lbs lighter.

Kiefer is at 8th place in assists with 5.5 APG and 6th place in steals with 1.6 SPG.

Well, he's a guard, And we are better at developing guards rather than bigs.. Where Jayson Castro developed his skills and being the best PG in Asia from 2013-2017? PBA diba.. PBA is the best route for him because Pinoy coaches know his skills and his position, there are some players here that he can match up and motivate himself to be best again (likes of Pringle, Mikey, Bolick, etc....) And as for his availability in Gilas, He has a choice, he will ask coach Tab to join again and go thru Gilas draft or straight directly to the PBA thru regular draft...

Castro and those guys you mentioned were already good before they entered the PBA.. even TR, LA , Lee etc are already finished products before entering the league. College and foreign leagues already prepared them that's why they're good from the get go

B1 should do.. he could’ve choose b1 from the get go but the euro coach of earthfriends prolly promised something about 1gdl about liga endesa stint that’s why he took that offer even though 1gdl is b1 league calibre player..

According to Mikee Reyes, it was Tokyo Z that push the B.League to allow dual citizen players as long as they played as a local in FIBA tournament. JGDL sign with Tokyo Z as a sign of gratitude to them. If not for the sacrifice of JGDL, Dwight, Parks and his brother will not be able to play in B. League

Castro develops his shooting and playmaking skills in PBA. He is definitely a special player and has been an import with Singapore Slingers but still raw and mostly use his quickness to beat defenders. He became multi-faceted in PBA.

Yeah, we're a guard-oriented country, that's why we're good at developing guards. Our best players are often guards, to the point that 3-guard lineups have become common in the PBA. Scottie Thompson developed here, as did Castro, Bolick, and even Kiefer. They became better-rounded in the PBA.

Juan might have to develop here first, and have some discipline. Develop his playmaking and probably defense here.

I agree with this. Matching up against the starters every practice is nothing to scoff about. He will play in the actual games if he performs well enough at practice. Being benched in NBL games is not necessarily a bad thing. It's a start. Jock Landale looks slow in the NBA but was a Finals MVP or something in the NBL. Kai doesn't need to be Porzingis athletic to get playing time. He just needs to be fundamentally sound on defense and offense. He shouldn't go for highlight dunks if it robs him of energy to run back on defense. Or if it causes knee problems. He just needs to be steady on D and don't push his body too much.

agree, that's the problem with hype, it gets on your head. Hope Kai stays grounded and stick to fundamentals and concentrate in becoming a better role player instead of the next porzingis

As for bigs naman, I hope that some will enter overseas leagues eventually. True, we're better at developing guards than bigs, but we have developed bigs with good skillsets as well. Just lacking in size until now, as the present generation has been producing good-sized bigs in both positions. I mean, Paras, Patrimonio, Ildefonso, then Japeth, Sangalang, June Mar.

Now we have a new generation of up-and-coming bigs spearheaded by Tamayo, Baltazar, and Kai. Kai's already in the NBL, and Tamayo and Baltazar look good enough to at least play rotation minutes in the B.League or maybe even KBL. Hope more bigs can be good enough to play overseas. Playing overseas might help our bigs learn to play at least the 4, because the 5 is usually manned by the import (depends on the team, but still). Kemark Cariño, for example, has split time between 4 and 5 for Aomori, although a lot of that time has been at the 5. Maybe some other bigs might learn or play the 4 position overseas, although I hope with a higher degree of success (as in rotation or starter's minutes).

true, objectively Kai is in a great position, he has a guaranteed 2 to 3 years contract (with 6 figures $$$) to improve and possibly be NBA ready at a steady pace. It's the Hype Train of most pinoys that's creating all the unnecessary pressure on him. Let him improve at his own steady pace and enjoy the game

i see him as a quality guy for 36ers next season.. a possible starter or off the bench guy with solid minutes like 15-20.. humphries might not come back to adelaide next season..

Buddy Peezones this one's for you

Back in the late 2010's some of the posters here compared Japeth Aguilar to Chris Bosh. I think Kai is better than Japeth at 20. Let's see if he gets some major playing time in his 3rd game.

melbourne united is the next game. the defending champions and melbourne is on a roll right now.. he will get playing time if it’s already lopsided..

Well, there are only things that Japeth and Chris Bosh are similar - first is they are both 6'9 in height and, second, they both have smaller heads (literally).

In fairness to Japeth he became a much better player under Coach Tim Cone.

Japeth is "only" around 6'7 I think. Totally different games. He doesn't have half of Bosh's moves or BBIQ. The worst comparison I read here is the one comparing him to KD based on a single pic..

In fairness though he has matured a lot and is more comfortable in games. But still far from the player people thought he'd ended up as

Davao Tigers joining the ABL...Will we see Ping and Simon playing in the ABL? McCullough, Balkman and Brownlee as imports?

https://tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/davao-tigers-to-take-over-alab-franchise-in-abl/229867

Davao-Cocolife has gotten a franchise for the upcoming season of the regional league tentatively scheduled to begin next month.

The development was confirmed to Tiebreaker Times by Tigers team manager Rey Alao.

“Si Rocky [Chan] nakausap yung ABL at we confirmed our participation,” said Alao.

Davao’s new home league is the Pilipinas Super League, which is targeting a March 11 start date.

Alao sees no problem in this as the Tigers are looking to add more players to their already stacked roster as the team is also supported by both Cocolife and the San Miguel Corporation.

“Long-term yung usapan namin dun sa mga players namin at baka pagusapan namin nung PBA na kung puwede namin gamitin yung players na hindi ginagamit,” said Alao.

“Sana pahiramin din tayo ni Boss RSA (Ramon Ang) ng import at yun yung pag-uusapan nila ni Gov. Claude (Bautista).”

The Tigers have a cracked roster headlined by Jerwin Gaco, John Wilson, Paolo Hubalde, Robby Celiz, and Billy Ray Robles.

Completing Davao Occidental are Keith Agovida, Joe Presbitero, Marco Balagtas, Emman Calo, Bonbon Custodio, Gab Dagangon, Chris Lalata, Irven Palencia, Allan Santos, and Joseph Terso.

Arvin Bonleon, Davao’s head coach in Filbasket, will still serve as the team’s chief tactician. Current assistant coaches are Manu Inigo and Matt Makalintal.
