Filipino Ballers in the US...News and Updates

we have to face the reality that we lack bigmen that is good enough to compete internationally so we have to be contented with what we have right now and hopes our guards outside shooting and fastbreak pointswill make-up for what we lacked in inside scoring. toroman is realistic with the team he was forming, he need a bigman who can defend the post and grab rebound. he knows our strength our little guys.

simply put... we never had a pinoy 6'9 and above who is as athletic as japeth.

for that alone, i think he is special.

Yes i agree!!! special...with lots of injury that makes him more special.:):):)

Then, I shouldn't have posted that link in the first place. :D

Give Japeth some time. He came from an inury. It remains to be seen if he will make it to Yeng's team.

hahahaha. this debate is heating up....

japeth aguilar has been one of the most documented players here in interbasket. He used to have his own thread until it got merged into this thread (despite my protestations, hehehe). he's quick for his height, and his got hops, like a bong alvarez gifted with marlou aquino's height (ok maybe he can't slash like mr. excitement, but i hope you get the drift). on physical attributes alone (height plus athletic ability), he deserves an automatic slot in the RP NT. questions are being raised regarding his development as a player, his conditioning (after 2 years of injuries), and his confidence level.

skills-wise, japeth is not very far away from greg slaughter and junmar fajardo. but he is definitely quicker than both these guys. jervy maybe a better individual player, but a 6-3 PF just won't cut it in international ball anymore (with apologies to abe king, hehehehe). same goes with a 6-7 C even if he's the lord of UAAP big men.:D in international competition, jervy will be a very slow SF, while rabeh will still be undersized at PF. and we should start to look at the NT as a national TEAM, not an all-star squad. i mean, a UAAP MVP may not be as useful in the NT as a quick 6-9 natural PF.

again, japeth's putback slam showcases his athletic ability and rebounding prowess - 2 things RP NT badly needs. and the reason he's not filling up the stat sheets is he's not getting any PT. 4 rebounds in less than 10 minutes is like 16 rpg. and this was done in US NCAA D1. if you have no idea about the calibre of NCAA D1 teams (they're not exactly NT's), you should research the experience of our own Centennial team when they went on tour in the states some 10 years ago.

japeth needs a confidence boost. only a while back, not too few fans hoped he'd be the first full-blooded pinoy to reach the NBA. that may not be realistic now. but who knows? maybe after a year or 2 under toroman, he can blossom to become RP NT's starting PF with lines like this: 14ppg, 12rbg, 3bpg (elite fantasy league player, hehe). and he might just land a 10-day contract with the Grizzlies. :D:D:D

I just want to add, if someone like Andy Seigle was included in the national team twice why not include Japeth Aguilar who is much more versatile and athletic than Seigle. Aguilar will be an enormous help to the national team defensively.

It might be better if we'll just wait for Japeth to suit up for the National team in 3-4 months time from now...:):):)

Japeth will have to prove himself against the best the Philippines has right now. If he can prove himself to be better than Jervy or Rabeh, fine. Am not going to assume that just because he has height and hops, he is automatically better than those two. Jervy has time and again proven himself against taller opposition.

Ok, I guess we have misunderstanding here. Or mayber you are clouded by your too much optimisim or your imagination has abandoned reality. I just cited Rabeh or Jervy, because, first they are in the pool and I think they are the current barometer of big men in the amateurs.

I'm not saying that Japeth is not good or doesn't deserve to be in our NT. I still think he does. The issue is "shoo-in". He is not.

He may be good or has the potential, but still, it remains to be seen, and he has to prove it. At this point he hasn't proven anything yet, well because of injuries. It's not his fault. But let's be realistic with the situation rather than saying things about him, which he is not - yet, or imagining things he could do, which at this point or after 2 yrs under Rajko, he could not (14ppg, 12rpg, 3blks???). At best possibly 8ppg, 6rpg, 1blk after 2 yrs with Rajko for our NT.

I think we can end our discussion. You have your point and I have mine. I could see your point very clearly, and I hope you see mine. You just have to think of it and analyze. Agree?

no problem bro. while i still believe japeth is a shoo-in (atleast in toroman's squad), i respect your opinion.

in other words, i agree to disagree. :D:D:D

okay, i think it's best to move on and just wait for may to see if japeth can live up to all the hype (or prove his detractors wrong, as the case may be).

GO PILIPINAS!!!

I'm with you with this one bro,I think Japeth should be given a slot with any RP team that's being formed hoping that he will be healthy all the way through,I mean how many Filipinos that you know who is tall, atleast 6'9" and playing well in colleges in the States?not many if any right?I can only think of two, Japeth and Gian .Height thats what we lack and both of them have it.They are young and our future in international basketball.

GO RP TEAM!!!

Talk to a scout from Memphis....

I ask him about who are the potential high-major players in the class of 2011...

He identified 4 players...

Adonis Thomas and he describe him as the best sophomore in the state....He's being recruited heavily by major programs like georgetown...

Bobby Parks jr. is the second best player for him, he can overtake Thomas but he told me that he will not get much that respect because of the competition that he played against....

Andre Hollins best scorer in their class.....

Kendran Johnson

Ray is playing in division 2-A ,right? What is the best division in memphis high school basketball...

Ray's team will be playing Briarcrest on Friday night, they are the best high school team in memphis and I think they have 3 division 1 players....

one of them is North Carolina commit Leslie McDonald.....I hope Ray will be at his best on this game....Lol we don't the Tar heels coaching staff will be watching the game, and Roy Williams :D:cool:

hey nick, been in touch with Paul Alcordo of TheFilipino.com but could not get the contact info of the people organizing the Indiana Filipino Basketball League, appreciate if you can help me spread this around:

SBP USA regional director Caloy Allado announces that there is a Filipino-American Camp to be held in the US to search for probable national players of the Philippines. We are staging this Fil-Am All-Star camp scheduled sometime in April 2009 to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada. We will be having two categories:

a. Senior Level (19-26 yrs old with college ball experience)

b. Junior Level (15-18 yrs old with high school ball experience)

The final number of teams will be determined on the number of players that will be nominated.

The purpose of the Fil-Am camp is to identify potential members for the Philippine national team that will compete in the Asian Games in 2010, Qualifiying Tournament leading to 2012 London Olympics and other international tournaments in the next four years. The national coach and his staff will be present in the camp.

We would appreciate your assistance in spreading the news to your members/players and hopefully you could nominate players to this camp.

For further information, please call or email:

if Justin is really interested, do see the announcements I posted in this forum and have him contact Mr. Caloy Allado accordingly. In the coming Las Vegas Camp they'll be separating the men from the boys.
