Fiba World Cup 2023 Philippines

Ranked # 38 best basketball nation despite being considered 5th shortest in terms of height in the world... perspective. Despite the fact that we could've placed higher, still pound for pound.

Biggest loser in rankings among Asian teams are Korea (from 36 to 51), Taiwan (from 69 to 79) and next WC host Qatar (from 89 to 104)… Are Qatar deserve a WC automatic spot as host with that kind of ranking? While biggest winners of recent rankings are Japan (from 36 to 26), Lebanon (from 44 to 28), Bahrain (from 84 to 69) and Indonesia (from 85 to 74)… NZL almost make it to the top 20 team (no. Aq ranked team )too, while surprisingly china didn’t dropped down too much…

I may agree on you on this but there's only one host but I dont see Qatar improving tremendously despite having (talented players) from 2023 to 2027..And knowing Qatar's reputation to FIBA the last decade..

They can host the event, but they should give same treatment as to Indonesia… if they can’t manage to be top 8 in fiba asia cup in 2025 then they are not deserve to be there… just give that slot to one European team… European region should have more spots than the current one… that is also my main reason why I think Qatar might be the host for 2025 FIBA Asia cup… they might not even qualify for the main Asian event if they will not host it… their gulf rivals Bahrain and Saudi are more impressive than them already…

Gilas should take seriously the 2025 fiba asia cup… if they not, their rankings will go down further and they can’t get any good draws in any fiba competitions in the future if they are still in the bottom…

I’m happy for Indonesian basketball… they manage to work hard for their basketball program and it succeed already, topping much perennial Asian power Taiwan is already big achievement from them… while its a big warning for Taiwan… they manage to host Jones cup event but they can’t host Pre OQT last month… they didn’t priority FIBA and that will be the result… it’s hard to imagine that Indonesia is higher rank team than Taiwan… they prioritize wrong events that didn’t matter to FIBA… And we didn’t knew what will be the punishment for Korea and Taiwan after declining to participate Pre OQT last month… if they suspended then another meltdown again for them… they deserve that low rankings…

Robert, the Jones Cup is embedded in their culture and is part of Taiwan's sporting legacy already. It is not FIBA sanctioned but they take pride in hosting year in and year out.

As such, Jones Cup is the only international basketball tournament that Taiwan can proudly wave their national flag and be represented as Republic of China

This is the real problem, plenty of players with height but they aren’t as good when compared to international players of the same size. Pretty much development issue

I mean could you name a single skill which our players are supposedly superior to our international counterparts? "Puso"is not a skill. You'd think we'd be better shooters or passers to compensate for our height right? What happened to our hyped up 6'6 players and above? Most of them are uncoordinated stiffs who can't even clap and chew gum at the same time or have serious medical issues like gigantism ( look at their facial features). Our supposed "NBA prospects" are overhyped badly managed prima donnas. Our younger players are overstaying in the minor leagues well into their late 20s.

Still not really matter… they can put their Jones cup before OQT.. the dates already set before they held their own tournament… still their fault, And FIBA will not let that as excuse… Taiwan and Korea should deserve suspension for their non participation.. no one is above the law… Taiwan and Korea are not special teams internationally…

I think it’s time to close this very forgettable thread, it’s been a very emotional and frustrating journey since that breaking news came up that the Philippines as the main host won the 2023 FIBA WC bidding alongside INA and JAP. Actually this whole bidding thing started when FIBA announced the bidding calendar for 2019 WC and 2023 WC on April 16, 2014 wherein CHI won the 2019 slot on Aug. 7, 2015 while the relentless and obsessed PHI won 2023 edition on Dec. 9, 2017. Now fast forward, what happened? If SBP and his minions of biased media keeps on posting on their usual platform that overall the hosting was a big success and in fact as per press release by the Sec. Gen. He commended the National Federation for the job well done. On that part alone, I had no issue on that if we are only talking about the accommodation, security and the logistics among others as part of the overall promotions and marketing of FIBA WC hosting, there’s no argument there, I’m not mad that. But as a fan, my main focus/expectation is the work rate of our team, for me personally, that’s the main slice of the pie of how I gauge if the overall hosting is a success or a failure because taking care of the visitors is already given and obligation being a committed host to make sure they feel comfy and secured from the time they landed until the time they depart. But unfortunately, our stakeholders had a reversed plan pala, our basketball team is just part of the sideshow for the purpose of resetting the Attendance Record and it is reveal all over the interview(left and right) that indeed that the real team was only prepared and assembled few days before the start of the tournament despite these overall hosting agenda started in 2014. Imagine if our stakeholders had a grandvision to make a difference if ever we are handed the hosting(which we did) maybe we could go deeper and upset some higher ranked squads. Oh well, we are fed enough of the soapbox called PhiNovela and now we were anticipating the new season of that low level TV show.

Thanks live_evil for creating this thread at that time when we received the news that we’ve won the bidding and we felt very enthusiastic because we were expecting that the 8 yr. old SBP(at that time) will form a long term team in the same breath as the 1974 World Cup bound team and the NCC of the late Boss as per immediate instruction by the late Apo Lakay with Gintong Alay’s Michael Keon may provide some help just in case(stories I’ve heard from the old-timers from our neighborhood who experienced Martial Law at that time as young students and young professionals who are not politically instructed and motivated during the 70’s and 80’s). It’s been a roller coaster ride for this thread..no thanks to SBP we are not totally sold about your marketing and promotions of your Puso Puso mantra, we as fan wants a genuine grassroot development.
