Fiba World Cup 2023 Philippines

Italy barely playing any defense and US almost did not reach 100pts. This US team is that weak.

USA scored 129 against Serbia in the 2014 Finals.

Cam Johnson from NBA scorer to Mr. Scoreless.

I agree. The focus on perimeter offense and switchability in defense has marginalized the bruising center in the NBA. In fact it is only Jokic who you could say is a center that throws his weight around in the NBA. It works with the Nuggets because they had years to build a team that maximizes Jokics strengths and compensates for his weakness. He plays drop defense but everybody else can switch. It is like a super charged SMB team. With a strong slow center and 4 switchable guys who can drive and shoot the 3.

Ironically, I think the key to defending Jokic is simple. Put a strong big guy on him. Thats what I think LA did against Denver in 2020 when they had McGee and Howard. AD is more of a finesse center. He doesnt have enough strength or bulk to bump against Jokic. As a result his offense suffers. He also slows down by bulking up to play center. It is still not effective against Jokic and he gives up his advantage which is actually his speed for his height.

Jokic will have Bogdanovic, Micic, Teodosic and milinutinov as starting 5 plus you have Pokusevski, Jovic as your 6 and 7 man… plus marjanovic as back up center for Jokic… Serbia is a complete team… their coach is only problem… but who cares? That line up is very strong and they have the best player in the world right now? They are not afraid even against best of USA team…

Group B, F and G are the weakest group… Serbia have easy route in their group matches, same as Slovenia and Spain… Italy was defeated by DR… it’s the match up that Italy can’t match USA because they don’t have post up bigs, the way Lithuania did vs USA 2 days ago… Germany can match USA, since they have Theis to post up soft American bigs, plus FIBA Schroder is unreal in these tournaments… Latvia doesn’t have bugs to match USA… it will be easy finals for USA if Latvia upsets Germany…

Correct, this disappointing loss for Italy doesn't mean we were the weaker group. It was just a bad matchup for the Italians paired with a great shooting night from the USA. I just wished btw that italians shot like this when we faced them haha. maybe we had a chance

Italia shot poorly the whole tourney, at least below par average wise. Yeah, we were “unlucky” (along with Serbia) to have caught them in their better shooting nights. Huge disappointment is their starting 4 Achille Polonara, who is playing way below expectations.

That said, the Italians actually overachieved. This is a rebuilding team that’s (in my opinion) about to become a Euro powerhouse in about 4-5 years from now.

Coach Tab: I think the thing that probably surprised me the most is also the thing that annoys me the most. And I don't think that it is absolutely our coaches' fault. Which means its correctable. Further, we should never have a single-import that is given of all the rules-latitude that the import was given here by the referees and by the administration of the PBA and I do believe that it is based in the desire to have superstars. As a marketing tool for the PBA and of course, the imports that come here are so very outstanding players and they become superstars because of their statistical performance... so many.. examples, situations.

So, I.. the question that this begs to me, why aren't these guys, superstars, in bigger leagues and leagues where they can play 10 months a year and earn, significantly greater salaries over the course of the year than they earn here? Why aren't they?

And the reason is they aren't given the regulatory advantages by the referees that they are given here. So, in other words, putting it on layman terms, a foul for a PBA player, or for a local player, isn't a foul on an import.

And the foul of an import, that same foul on the local players, isn't a foul. So, our local players are competitively disadvantaged in their ability to compete against the import players. This is not the case in other countries. And you ask yourself why one PBA coach after another when they start their games, 48-minute games, they don't match-up the imports against one another. Why is that?

Well, it is tactically smart, tactically sound, because they can afford the fouls cause they know the import produce so much offense for their teams. but that's not so bad is the fact, and this gets back to my original point, gets back to the fact that if you are a PBA coaching you don't tactically run your systems through the import, you're pretty stupid! Because they are given all the advantages.

So, PBA coaches are smart lad. They are good basketball coaches. but they could be much better if they were forced to coach much more, I believed. I think then, they would show their real talents. But I think that, because of the way our imports are treated here, it is not sound thinking for a coach to not exploit what is obvious to every PBA coach and that is to run your offensive systems through your import. Because you get an extra-ordinary numbers of free-throws through the imports. You get an extra-ordinary number of easy basket opportunities through the import. And you get an extra-ordinary numbers situation, where the local players literally get out of the way of the imports.

And so, you know, I think that system... It creates a fault landscape for our basketball coaches and our basketball players and I think it needs to change, sooner rather than later.

to simplify we are technically better than Leo Austria but we cannot beat him because of being cuddled by the PBA

put your money where you mouth is accept the be betting challenge of Kaireem . it might not happen but you don't really see what Team A of team USA will look like, none from this world cup lineup might make it if they decided to go at full strength, Jokic might be the best player in the world and Serbia has bunch of good players but a full strength Team USA is still levels above, and Serbia has not won a single major FIBA tournament yet even with Jokic

I dont know what happed but he ended with admu and had short gigs with gilas before being kicked out. I think he was in the pba for a short time as well? Happy to be corrected.

For his career, might be better if he moves. Dont know what else ph has to offer aside from the admu job due to the strained relationship with some of the stakeholders. But if he is happy with admu, e di go.

then again he can still keep the ateneo job while being the indonesian head coach. tab can also take on the program director role and train indonesian coaches just like what he did for gilas.

I'm not really comfortable with the idea of Tab coaching for one of our rivals. Imagine all the insider info and scouting reports he could share.

I agree with you. Tab knows our guys inside and out. Again, he will create a pool of young tall but quick players. They will probably lose early but they will have consistent development. It may come quick or slow but they will become well rounded defensive unit. Add DMX and a new NP similar to but better than Kouame then we will have our hard counter even with our B-league guys. This will be the realized form of his Gilas 2021 team with DMX playing the Balti role much better and the new NP. Well Kouame's blend of physical attributes, work ethic and coachability is not easy to find but with Indo' s resources I'm sure they can find one.

Letting Tab go is really a bad idea. He has been in the Philippine basketball landscape for the past 10 years. I bet that he already familiarized himself players' and coaches' tendencies here and he will bring that knowledge wherever he goes.
 
As much as some fans would like him to stay, if he feels there are better opportunities for him elsewhere, then we should just say thanks, good luck, and let him go. I think he did what sbp paid him to do given the restrictions he faced. If sbp calls him back to service and he accepts, e di good, if not, then atleast he was part of gilas history.
 
We simply are not developing high school players that receive interest from overseas major leagues (Div1, Euro/Ozy academies) at the rate others are. And the it definitely translates to the.level of competitiveness at FIBA. (This is so Obviously clear). That is really the biggest difference
 
Tab's biggest legacy to Philippine basketball was triggering the Asian OFW leagues movement, the impact in improving our level of FIBA competitiveness is evident with our best eligible players (Dwight , Kai, AJ, Abando, Kiefer ) all belong to that pathway.
ironically it's this same change in landscape (Asian league exodus) that kicked out Tab.
Which begs the question what really is the objective of the SBP stakeholders, is it really basketball progress or commercial self interest?

FIBA rules is very different than NBA rules… 2nd, a prime Kobe, Lebron, KD, Melo, etc… just only won 5 vs Lithuania in 2012 Olympics and 8 vs Spain in 2008 Olympics… a full force Serbia or Wemby led France is on the level of those Lithuania and Spain squad of the past… and by the way Serbia won silver medal in 2016 Olympics w/ Jokic by the way… need some research first before you post… aside from KD, old lebron and defensive liability steph (in fiba setting), other USA players are not impactful as those 3… morant, Zion, harden, Westbrook, lilliard, etc… are flops in fiba… they will be exposed there…
