So it’s basically Luka (hopefully), Murray(hopefully), SGA, Edwards, Ingram, Jaren Jackson, Brunson, Bridges, KAT, Markenhan, Jonas, Clarkson, Rui(I think),Gobert, DS, and Fran’s Wagner as best players this WC.

it would be much better if one of Giannis and Jokic played, and KP was solid but frustrating not seeing stars in this WC and pretty other WCs the past couple of years.

considering the culture here more stars would’ve loved it here.

and to think both Giannis and Jokic played during the windows and at the Eurobasket. so, for now Luka is the highest profile NBA star in the World cup. Makes you think if these b stars are enough to sell out MOA and the Araneta. Luckily Phil Arena is off the table

i thought the opening will be at Phil Arena?

I think USA will see great crowds and maybe DR with an all star like KAT will draw great interest.

IDK if Slovenia, Canada, and France can play in Manila, but they probably will draw great interest especially Luka.

IDK which country has best fan support but Lithuanians have a great NT fanbase. Hopefully they make it far too.

NzL potential beatable opponents based on power rankings

Look all beatable- Greece is now 15th (after Giannis without)
Nz is 17th , just behind Mexico 16th

And ahead of Montenegro- around 20th.

Of course Jordan and Egypt are 25 plus...

5 games (with exception of US and of course Lithuania) are all winnable, and arent even huge upsets.

But Giannis less Greece beat Luka led Slovenia… they still have power in their current line up… remember, they are playing in Europe… NZL can’t even beat China…

If FIBA can match FIFA or be clear cut second best tournament in the world, it needs to develop better parity and USA has to hopefully stop dominating every tournament and you can’t do anything but hope other countries catch up.
I honestly would work with Olympics to either expand the teams to make it like the FIFA WC or make Olympics under 23 again.

Olympics is kind of watered down when it’s like a two week tournament and only 12 teams.

Only way FIBA World Cup will be bigger than Olympics is that they should put Olympic basketball as U23 event… I think it’s time already since players will not commit every year… and w/ load management era these days.. even those players can’t even complete a season in their professional leagues (whether it’s nba or any pro leagues abroad)… and I don’t like 12 team Olympic basketball event since but limits the participation of other countries that deserve to play there… w/ more than 30-40 teams can be competitive every single day… NBA already pushed the idea before of having Olympic basketball being U23 event since NBA can’t get any revenue from there (Mark Cuban is the one who proposed this), because all of the revenue always going to IOC…

no matter how hard fiba tries to copy fifa, fiba can’t have the same authority fifa has.. i mean look at fifa whenever theirs a major tournament, no problems of lending of players (world cup, euro cup, qualifiers) but look at fiba.. major stars declining left and right and no major stars even in qualifiers..

fiba world cup won’t be the same as fifa world cup..

FIFA will not be bigger event today if they not gamble the idea putting the Olympic football being Under 23 event… I’m sure if Olympic football is free for all and no restrictions, the likes of Messi, Ronaldo or Mbappe will play for Olympics every single event and they might not participate some of World Cup events since it will tiring for them to play every single tournament… playing for Olympics is legendary, that’s why many athletes dream to play there… FIFA knows this, they gamble to put Olympic event a U23 because they see that athletes can’t commit every year in every major events… they think that there can be only one event that players should be focus for… I think FIBA already see this scenario now… I’m sure NBA and Euroleague will support FIBA’s move if they put Olympic basketball a U23 event (the reason they will support is that they can get some revenue shares in their World Cup while they can’t even get atleast 1% of revenue in every Olympic event)…

This is one of the reasons why ICC (cricket) don’t make an effort to put the sport cricket in the Olympic event since they know if cricket is in Olympics, many athletes will ignore ICC World Cup and will focus to play in Olympics… there are rumors that cricket will be in 2028 Olympics but I don’t think ICC will support this one… they will lose revenue especially that cricket will be at Olympics… and w/ less countries only plays cricket, that is a bad idea for ICC to push cricket in Olympics…

NBL is helping young prospects to make it into the NBA. The same is true with the leagues in Europe. I mean why not develop the leagues there into global ones like the NBA? NBA needs competition, not the other way around.

The only way is that offer big stars big money to join to their leagues… and I don’t think they can offer that huge money since the revenue in their leagues are less compare to NBA… maybe Saudis can start that? They have the money by the way, although I doubt it since basketball is not that big in KSA…even CBA trying to bring some NBA players but they only get 2nd rated NBA players… near retirement TMac and Marburry are the biggest names CBA get in the past….

This year's world cup really feels secondary.. sort of a B-tournament.. not much hype and all.. heck, I was expecting a grand showcase of new kits for major brands (nike, adidas, UA, etc..) for respective national teams but no.. there aren't any..

I guess everyone is looking forward to the 2024 Paris Olympics (back with fans and spectators unlike Tokyo 2020.. hope we really qualify..

Still better cast than 2019 edition… the biggest star in 2019 is Giannis only… Jokic is not a star back in 2019, same as Sabonis, Tatum, Mitchell and Brown… the next big stars after Giannis in 2019 is Gobert and Kemba Walker (back then he was an all star).. So big improvement from 2019 to 2023… Luka is the biggest star will play, but there are other players who are already all stars such as SGA, Edwards, Markannen, Halliburton, KAT, Gobert, JJJ… and Canada , Australia, DR bring their almost team A squad… it just unfortunate that most of the stars are injured… if Giannis is not injured, he will play for sure, same as Sabonis and KP…

Speaking of Mark Cuban, he also proposed before that the NBA teams/owners create their own world cup

Well, for sure many are disappointed but I think they are still watching because we still love basketball at all… and this is still better than NBA regular season games… every FIBA games are always crucial like a playoff atmosphere, since every games counts… especially for groups E and H… I think even w/o major stars, this edition might break the 2019 all time viewership record that they get… last 2019, they have 1.5 billion viewers who watch in any videos (YouTube, TV, social media, etc…)…

actually this year, if you look deep into it, despite a lot of stars not participating, this will be a very competitive tournament.. anyone (of course from the upper echelon of elite teams) can win the trophy.. and these are still high caliber world-class teams.. pretty sure this will be a joy to watch..

but being the premier event of FIBA, this year lacks the marketing and hype really..

is this purely FIBA's fault or SBP is liable as well?.

I’m sure mark Cuban didn’t knew that fiba World Cup already exist back then… let’s be honest here, fiba World Cup before (formerly fiba world championship) is not even televised back then.. I think it’s only 2014 or 2019 edition is the first time that the tournament was televised in the market… and I think this is only first time that fiba World Cup will be televise by ESPN… ESPN is not covering fiba World Cup back in 2019… so that’s already improvement… and fiba & nba already have partnership via courtside 1891 to be livestream in social media platforms…

Star power yes of course, but I think fiba is doing well despite stars are not there… this is beyond their control… but of course they should take more effort to convince the stars to join… maybe prize money should be involve too… or fiba has to make a move now, I think many fans and even players will support the move make the Olympic basketball as U23 event… for fans it is yes, I’m sure with the popularity of fifa World Cup, many are curious that why basketball World Cup is not as big as fifa when it is both world cups… fiba has the leverage already since basketball is already the 2nd most popular sport and the support of fans between basketball and football/soccer national teams are almost same.. example, when nikola jokic decided not to participate today for Serbia, he was being bashed right now by Serbian fans by being unpatriotic even thou he is healthy at all… in Spain, more than 11k watch the tune up game vs USA last Sunday and the crowd is wild cheering despite being underdogs… 2nd, with social media is already there, fans already appreciate the fact that World Cup should be the main event, not the Olympics (being influenced by FIFA’s version of World Cup)… in Olympics, there are many sports discipline that viewers being shared, unlike World Cup, it is only pure basketball event… and last for the players as well, with load management era these days.. it is not applicable to commit for their national teams every year… it is should be only one event that most of basketball players should be focus for international event… for now it is Olympics, but if fiba do the right thing and make Olympics as U23, things will be change since for sure and players will shift towards fiba’s main event moving forward…
