Despite all Gilas issues, and SBP poor management, i actually thinks Gilas has a plausible chance of qualifying for the Olympics.
they should be favored to beat Angola
and have a chance of upsetting China in the classification round .
if JC gets hot in front of a home growd, and our bigs defend and rebound decently (don't get dominated) we've got a chance of upsetting China.

Let's face it , as usual guard play is what brings us to the promise land. We cant simply compete based on talent but have to beat better and bigger teams with superior team work and playing beyond are talent level

If everyone plays at 100% of their potential, yes we can beat China and Angola.

these are players to watch for Angola national team going to Manila:

Bruno Fernando
Silvio De Sousa
Yanick Moreira (KD look a like)
Childeo Dundao (the 5’6 PG)
Gerson Goncalves
Jilson Bango

Did Silvio De Sousa play for Angola in the recent King Abdullah Cup? The Angolan jerseys didn't bear the surnames of players eh. It also looks like Yanick Moreira wasn't with the team in the King Abdullah Cup.

Simply put, the current iteration has to be slightly better in everything required to pull of a win in a WC event, than the decent 2014 Gilas WC Team. Maybe an oversimplification on my part as our groupmates (sans Angola, but we'll never truly know) and potential 2nd/classification round opponents could have improved too in the years since and are much steadier in their preparations.

Let's also not forget the WC compared to 2014 has watered down , as teams have expanded.from.24 in 2014 to 32 since 2019. The expanded teams come mostly from Asia and Africa .

In 2014 with the exception of Senegal all are 5 or more opponents where from Europe or Americas, in 2019 we played a couple of games vs Asian and Africa . It's quite different really..

if getting second round isnt possible for us sweeping consolation rounds is difficult to pull it off too. Jordan has good chance if they defeat new zealand (oops) in 1st round...You dont want this going in to classification matches..

I see Gilas and unluckily china in second round and face off in a winner take all match

Its much ore difficult to beat china than dominican republic..(china scouted almost if not our players)

Obviously given NZ rival for lone Olympic spot is Australia, NZ chances of qualifying for Olympics via the World cup is super slim ( Gilas has a better chance )

NZ chances are higher via next year's OQT, if Adams , Waardenberg, Webster bros join and NZ host one of the OQT, I do think NZ has a plausible chance of making the Olympics.

foe the WC a realistic goal for the WC is to make the 2nd round or at least place higher than their 19th place finish in 2019. (For last 2 decades in this century NZ has placed higher than any Asian team for every WC edition 2002 to 2019.( interesting to see if it continues, I feel streak can end this August

Why id the Webster bros opt out on this world cup?

Angola struggling against Japan. No reason for us not to beat them. Unless Choke happens.

Angolan guards are SMALL just like the Japs.

No shotblocker for both sides.

Yeah… that’s why I can’t recognize them… even no scoresheet of performance of players (or just Arabic, w/c maybe I can’t found)… but for sure fernando was there and their 5’6 guard… they are the ones that I recognize them..

Well, your national team can make in Olympics in 2032, since Australia is the host then only team that New Zealand can rival for that spot is Guam… unless something changes happen in 2032 (maybe Olympic basketball will be u23 event at that time)…

The only problem for Jordan if they will get 3-2 record after classification is the quotient… w/ USA in their group, they need to win via lopsided in their games that supposedly they can beat.. otherwise, they can’t beat out either China or Philippines in that lone asian spot or Jordan has to pray that no Asian team can reach 3 wins after classification matches… for sure that they will lose lopsided to USA (maybe 60 pts or more) and Greece (since no Giannis, maybe a 10 pt deficit is enough for Jordan)….

Someone from Japan just got posterized. I think it was Yudai Baba. Monster jam from an Angolan.

Well, Whether that you hate chot or not… historically, Chot has winning record vs China all time since 2007 (4-2)…the only Filipino coach that knows how to beat China…

chot’s record vs China since 2007:

2007 Fiba Asia championship prelims : PHL 79 - China 74

2007 Fiba Asia championship classification round : PHL 76 - China 74

2012 Fiba Asia cup prelims : PHL - 68 - China 71

2014 Fiba Asia cup 3rd place game : PHL - 80 - China - 79

2014 Asian games classification round: PHL - 71 - China - 78

2017 Fiba Asia cup prelims : PHL - 96 - China 87

the other matches the includes Gilas vs china doesn’t include chot as coach of gilas are all loses…

2011 fiba asia championships prelims : PHL - 60 - China - 75 (rajko toroman as coach)

2015 fiba asia championship finals : PHL 67 - China - 78 (tab Baldwin as coach)

2018 Asian games prelims: PHL 80 - China - 83 (yeng guiao as coach)

But most of chot’s matches vs china are only team B or u23 teams (notably in 2007)… this is the 1st time that chot will likely face china that is their team A plays… all of our loses vs china that includes their team A are all loses, but of course chot is not that coach… we will see if chot still has the magic to beat China…
