Rewatching the game between Australia and Venezuela, you will notice the superiority of Australia in these aspects - size, heft, skills and coaching.

Actually, I am pretty surprised how hefty Australian players are.

mills is the shortest.. and boomers are going away with mills size type guards..

giddey will be the lead guard moving forward..

thybulle played some PF alongside with reath.

"and boomers are going away with mills size type guards.."

- they can afford to do so.

"thybulle played some PF alongside with reath."

- with Giddey, Ingles and Exum. you will not mind it. hahaha

This is actually the norm already for FIBA, (NBA.SFs are FIBA 4s) Carmelo, KD , Tatum and Ingram are all NBA.SFs but FiBA PFs.

Cooks , Reath are centers

Galinari actually played alot of center for Italy

nZ center- Fotu and PF - Delaney. This is the modern gsme ..

NZ PGs Izayah and Cameron are big and strong

that's why i don't mind inserting Malonzo at the 4 since he has the length and athleticism to play it. actually, it is where his game will be maximized, instead of playing him at the 3 for a longer time.

NZL actually has always been small, Issac Fotu 6'8 has been the main center, Not Loe (limited mins), Vokona 6'7 is another undersize big.
6'10 Wetzel (NBL 2nd team candidate) is unusual for NZ.

The thing about NZ bigs is they're athletic and versatile

contrary to thought the scout reputation of Asian Bigs is nol lack of height, but lack of speed and athleticism . This is Asia's general weakness.

even this iteration of Gilas has taller bigmen than New Zealand. the difference, though, is like what you said - lack of mobility. among the 4 Gilas bigmen (centers), it is only AJ Edu that has the mobility that can compete beyond Asia.

After this World Cup, I believe that we have seen the last of Junemar and Japeth with Kai and AJ will be their replacements. However, if both young bigs are not available, then who will be the other available bigs?

Ideally the two should retire from FIBA duties after this WC (Heck Japeth had no business to be part of the team back in 2019, JMF was so-so), but, knowing SBP and the PBA, they'll insist including Junmar for the next iteration of Gilas, by 2027 JMF might be a 8 time mvp and is only 37 years old which is young for PBA standards (Heck Kelly and Asi were part of Gilas in their 40s)

Japeth should retire already… gilas already have their replacements for him… thanks for his services… but I think junmar might be serviceable in 2027… especially we don’t know if Kai and AJ are available on that occasion…

Senegal beat top ranked African team Nigeria in their OQT match up yesterday… it means is gilas capable to upset even DR and Italy too? The Nigerians who played yesterday is almost their team A…

Absolutely, Malonzo loses his advantage if he plays 3,
Malonzo is actually Gilas only true FIBA modern 4 in the pool.

That is why Tab was fast tracking converting Carl and Baltazar to swings , (which is essentially FIBA modern 4s)

I actually think that Japs still has a role to play this WC. Remember, in order to protect Edu we avoid playing him at C if we can. Like it or not Japeth is our next best overall defender. Of course Kai has the potential to start. But his defense has holes in it, particularly at the perimeter. Remember in the China tuneups it was only when Japs started that we had a good rhythm to start the game. Pop used to start Bruce Bowen as SF. It was to start the game with a defensive tone. In our case, with JMF starting we gave up an lead early. Not so with Japs. The only problem with Japs is he checks out of the game offensively when he can't score early. We can take that I think. We dont really need Japs offense that much as long as he keeps up the D specially at the start of the game.

The Boomers even fielded this five:

F Xavier Cooks - 6'8
F Joe Ingles - 6'8
F Dyson Daniels - 6'7
G Dante Exum - 6'6
G Chris Goulding - 6'4

No natural bigs but still tall and pretty versatile.

For me, Caelum Harris and LeBron Lopez will be the understudies of Jamie Malonzo here.

With Harris, Lopez and Harper, Jr., Gilas will have a good supply of that kind of player.

Wasnt Baltazar playing SF a key in our almost defeating Serbia even without Dwight? We need tall SFs to match up with the tall Euro SFs at least. Even JC will be outmuscled by Euro SFs I think.

Also, it just might be me but despite Malonzo getting all those boards at PF in the tuneups he looked over matched, particularly against taller frontlines. It looked like Dwight was better in bodying up taller guys because of his more muscular frame.

switchable too.. CG with the only not good defender on that 5..

next week monday they will face france NT and georgia prior to World Cup in Japan..

The team also miss josh green and jock landale..

knowing thybulle, he got some steals playing the 4..

True, Junemar could be a insurance big come 2027 and could get spot minutes to guard the post against tall/bulky players. Proved that we qualify to the WC

Again, has anyone seen Angola play? I think our final 12 should be based on who will match up best against Angola. Nothing about politics, not about who's the better player... but about who will be effective against Angola. Winning against Italy is a pipe dream, and against DR a notch below that.

If we don't have much info on Angola and if Senegal indeed is a close approximation, then we should look at who was effective in our games against Senegal and who was ineffective.

I hope the Gilas coaching staff is scouting Angola diligently, does Gilas even have a scout?
