I think CJ has a chance to start as combo guard to JC's PG. It depends on when and if Scottie can play. Newsome can be a defensive alternative to start. But it might depend on who between Japs and Kai starts. Jap has been doing a good job establishing our defense at the start. In that case CJ should start for more offense. If Kai starts maybe Newsome starts. I dont think there is a chance Kiefer starts. I think he will play minimal minutes.

Speaking of the point guard position, guys do U think Gilas would have performed better in that pocket tournament in China with a healthy Iskati Thompson? I think almost of all of us here would agree that Iskati can orchestrate better than CJ Perez. We all know that Perez is a natural 2-guard who was compelled to play the point in China becoz Iskati was injured.

yup definitely. i think scottie is better than keifer or even to some extent better than perez in the PG position.

My death super speedy versatile 5
Clarkson
Parks
Dwight
MALONZO
AJ

too bad, this would likely be Chot’s death five

Kiefer
Pogoy
CJ or Parks
Clarkson
Japeth

hope Chot realizes that your death five has the lenght and agility to match up against DR and to some extent Italy

Replace Kiefer with CJ , remove Parks, slide Clarkson to the 3, and put Malonzo at 4, it is still a good five.

Perez - 6'2
Pogoy - 6'2
Clarkson - 6'4
Malonzo - 6'5
Edu - 6'10

This five may be short in height but different story if you talk about their length.

I believe that this team can go toe-to-toe with the Dominicans. IMO, our team is built like the Mexicans and some other South Americans teams.

Spain is one of those teams that don’t need many nba players… their local league (ACB) is one of the tough leagues in the world… Aldama, Hernangomez bros, Garuba who I think is one of the toughest big man rotation in the tournament… while ever reliable veterans Sergio Lull and Rudy Fernandez will be the veteran leadership with the team… I don’t think they will be out easily… they are I think better than Canada, Germany, Slovenia and they always have France numbers every time they meet…

Point is, media doesn’t like teams with less NBA players because it doesn’t get clicks.

As a Liga ACB fan, go Bar

Spain is the top fiba world ranking, and most consistent eurobasket top finishing team. It plays excellent basic spartan basketball. It obviously doesnt care who the personalities are on the other side of the floor. It takes an all-nba elite stars team to handle them well.

if the top pba players even come near the focus, abilities and size of the top 24 spanish players, we wouldnt be worrying about who will get selected in the final 12.

Spain is one of the very few teams which doesnt even need nba players to finish very consistently near the top. A us team without 6 nba all stars will be kicked around by other top ten teams.

Does the phrase "consistently good" go well together with a coachot team? Why, all his selections always come under public suspicion for lack of world-class focus, abilities and size.

Is there anything inferior in this hereunder spanish pool?

Yeshkel ranting the absence of the big wings and shooters that were part of Tab's team. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3pRRf6WkxQ . I would like to add Bollick. We lack ceiling in our PFs after Edu. We lack shooters. And we lack a bigger PG. Why not just invite the best and see who performs best right? Or are we earmarking the slots to PBA players?

Since that historic 2017 decision, look where we are right now were still cramming with less than 2 weeks before the start of the actual conclave.

I don’t think putting Scotty 2 Hotty in the narrative of a final 12 is a wise decision considering it’s less than 2 weeks before the actual war and we cannot afford anymore last minute decisions just to please the bicolanong chualay. The dude was inactive for quite sometime now and the late arrival of our trump card is already a concern as far as cohesion and chemistry of the team are concern. And now entertaining the poor soul whose hand is still fresh and tender..Oh c-mon now!! enough said.

I feel the final nt will still be strong enough, and not an embarrassment like the previous coachot unano teams.

Adding key missing small forwards like amos, balti and balungay, among others, will definitely be an asian championship caliber team. I assume though that steady big stalwarts like jc, aj and kai will be there, and passing-with-3point shooting destroys the dribbling addiction of national coaches.

Fajardo and aguilar are still good but aging players. There are 6'9 and taller local college players that need rapid skills development to replace them. Kouame is already overdue for consideration as a local player based on fiba decisions. He or some other athletic seven footer must be the naturalized player. That 7 footer tolentino from hawaii has some legit skills, and could also be applied for as a local player later.

Jc will not always be around. But i think we have enough 6'4-6'6 local guards who can diligently emulate his hard work.

Geo Chiu looks serviceable and he's now 6'10, plus Michael Philipps. A bigmen core of Kai,AJ,Chiu & Philipps should be good enough for the next 15 years. 3s & 4s like Amos,Tamayo,Ballungay,Malonzo,Lopez & Harris look good on paper.
And for our backcourt Ramos,Koon,Winston,Bayla,Heading & my suggestion for the next naturalized Sedrick Barefield should be Okay.

I agree with Yeshkel's takes on Baltazar, Tamayo, Jordan Heading & of course his take on who should coach Gilas in the World Cup. But on his take on Matthew Wright, I strongly disagree.

What impact did Wright make on Gilas in the last 5 years or so? He was doing well in the PBA & recently in the B-league, but when playing the FIBA game, Wright's presence was hardly felt.

Besides, Wright isn't that young anymore. I would rather have a younger & developing player like Rhenz Abando in the World Cup than another aging player like Wright in pool/team.

Don't forget AK too, with AJ,KAi tandem that would a good frontline two 6'11 and a 7'2 that's Euro size,I wouldn't mind them sliding AJ to 3 once in awhile.Geo should be good enough as a backup on SEA GAMES level, and some windows qualifier.

I really don't get our obsession to have a size at par with Europeans. Even if our players are as tall as Europeans, if the skill level and laterals are not good, then being tall has no use at all. Just superficial.

For me, I would rather look like a Mexican or a DR team because that will be more realistic than be like Spain or Serbia.

I will stand with my 12:

C - Edu/Aguilar/Fajardo
F - Malonzo/Oftana
F - Ramos/Parks
G - Perez/Pogoy/Abando
G - Clarkson/Newsome

I will put emphasis on skills, length and athleticism over height alone.

Size matters the most at the 4-5 positions, so we can’t afford to be undersized in those positions.

Skill, mobility and athleticism matter more. These three can override size easily.

For a 5, I prefer an AJ Edu or Japeth-type of bigman.

For a 4, I prefer a Kelly Williams, Jamie Malonzo-type of forward.

For me, our game against the Dominican Republic is an eye opener. Size is not everything in basketball. Without superior skills and athleticism, size means nothing but a big/tall body.

For me, AJ and Japeth have an ok size for a 5. Japeth is 6'9 while AJ is 6'10. Malonzo, though undersized like Pingris, has a high motor and length which I find it to be more valuable than being just tall.
