That's why putting Oftana is better choice right now than Pogoy or any small guards, since Oftana can play multiple positions, And he can shoot 3s too.... Pray for Scottie's fast recovery... If not, then expect Kiefer will be the main PG of Gilas, I know more Gilas fans doesn't like him....

we need length at the 3 really bad

he’s not the phenom without dust, post fiba suspension keifer is just average-above average PG, i would rather have rj or bolick over him. But he’a a token mvp boy so he’s in the roster

His game has really really detoriated. He used to be one of our most explosive guards and one of the reason I used to like him better than TR is that he is much more athletic and doesn't need a lot of moves to create separation. He's not even starting material anymore .

Remember when they called Bolick the Kiefer stopper. How's times have changed..

Its seems their really going to play Japeth some PF. Lets see if it works in the last tune ups. With Erram out it seems Edu takes the last spot. Chot is saying he’s healthy. I hope he’s correct.

Without Brownlee, I think Chots penchant for going small at SF will be a problem. I think JB being able to play 3, 4 and maybe 5 helped Chot a lot in the Euro tuneups. JC will be too small at SF.

The PF and SF rotation is still a big question mark. The C I think will be Kai then JF. But if Kai still cant practice, Jap will start at C.

The PF slot will be an experiment. I dont think Chot will overplay Dwight and play him at PF a lot. So if Jap starts at C I think Malonzo will start at PF for the tuneups at least. Then Dwight at SF. SG will be earmarked for JC. PG will be Kiefer or Newsome.
If Kai starts, Japeth will probably play PF.

Actually one of my biggest frustrations in this Gilas pool/team is not having Justin Baltazar & Carl Tamayo who I think are the best natural fours in Philippine basketball right now, and the thing is, they are still developing/improving (especially Tamayo). Jamie Malonzo for me is more of a combo forward or a tweener. Not having younger "fours" like Tamayo & Baltazar for the World Cup only means a missed opportunity for those two players to further improve & hone their skills in the world stage. While Tamayo begged off due to sore knees, Baltazar on the other hand was not invited to the pool in the 1st place, and I wonder why? Politics? His handlers won't allow him to play for coach Chot?

with kai-chot saga with possibly kai out, the possible final 12 could be:

bigs (5) - Japeth, Junemar, AJ
forwards (4/3) - Malonzo, Oftana
wings (3/2) - Dwight, Parks, Thirdy
guards (1/2) - JC, Newsome, Scottie, CJ

Thirdy over Abando. Sorry guys, Gilas needs heft that can defend Italian and Dominican players.

I think his handlers will allow him to play. If Tab was able to convince his handlers I'm sure Chot and company can. I think Chot has preferences for his teams. He likes two type of forwards. An athletic energy-type or a super skilled shooting type. Most of his favorite Gilas forwards can be categorized into these. Pingris, Norwood, Williams: athletic type; RDO, CDC: shooting type. Tamayo falls into the skilled shooting type. This is why he picked him for the 23 on 23 and in the current pool. Unfortunately, Baltazar falls into a gray area. He is mobile for his height and as a homegrown but he is not as explosive nor as fluid as Chot's athletic type. He is skilled but is not skilled or good a shooter enough to fall into Chot's shooting type. Unfortunately, Baltazar's strength in defense and versatility does not fall into Chot's priority of either athleticism or above average offensive skill for forwards.

He would rather prioritize Edu, despite his injury history, because Edu's athleticism falls more into his type. Same as Malonzo and Dwight as a 4 falls more into his athletic type. Japeth as a 4 is something he doesn't want to do but has to because of lack of size and health in the 4 spot. Which is unfortunate because Balti does have a combination of height and health that our other 4s lack.

Athletic type: Malonzo, Oftana, Dwight, Thirdy
Shooting type: Oftana, Abando, Parks

Take note we're talking about guys who can play the 4 internationally here. Both RDO and Pingris could play the 4 internationally. Among these guys only Malonzo and Dwight can play the 4 internationally.

While Baltazar isn't as athletic as Kelly Williams, Malonzo or Pingris, he is not wanting in athleticism. I think by Asian basketball standards, pasok sya sa banga. Balti is more athletic than Tamayo. I think in terms of skills, Balti has better 3-pt shooting than Tamayo but the latter has better handles than the former.

The way I look at it, both Tamayo & Balti are upgrades in terms of height to many time Gilas stretch-four Ranidel Deocampo. Both players enjoy at least a 2-inch edge in height over RDO.

I think under coach Tab, Balti did better for Gilas than Tamayo. Maybe we can attribute that to age, Balti being older than Tamayo.

why not Abando over newsome or CJ?

Abando doesnt have the laterals yet to match up on Dominican and Angolan wings.. but what Abando brings is that he might become a maba like in offense facing a home crowd..

CJ is so underrated in ibn.. he was overrated in 2019.. but the first step of cj is next to JC..capable defender to due to his physial gifts

My 12 is similar. But sorry no Thirdy for me. He is too short to be a 3 and doesn't shoot well enought to be a 2. He or Abando will be my pick if Scottie can't play though. I like Abando because he is a good spot up shooter. Newsome, Ramos and even Kiefer are not good 3 pt shooters for their positions. Even CJ is a reluctant 3 pt shooter. So depending on how the final tuneups go it will be either Abando or Thirdy for me. If it looks like the 12 need more shooting I will take Abando. If it needs more defense and ball handling, I will take Thirdy. It is funny though that a few years ago Thirdy was the UAAP superstar and Abando was just an upstart. Thirdy was even the first homegrown to play in an international league. Thirdy is actually the better defender and the better ball handler. But Abando even in his rookie year had one thing that Thirdy didn't, good 3 pt shooting. For a 6'2/6'1 basketball player it would be hard to be effective internationally if you don't have one. This is Abando's bread and butter despite all of his other skills substandard internationally for his height.

1. Kai - C
2. JF - C
3. Jap - C/PF
4. Edu - PF
5. Malonzo - PF/SF
6. Ramos - SF/PF
7. Clarkson - SG/SF
8. Parks - SG/SF
9. CJ - SG/PG
10. Newsome - PG/SG
11. Kiefer - PG
12. Scottie - PG/SG
13. Abando or Thirdy - Scottie replacement

why not Abando over newsome or CJ?

Newsome and CJ can bring the ball down. Abando can't. Although Newsome and CJ are so-so at the three point line, I will still take them over Abando, who is underskilled to be an off-guard (lacks laterals and ballhandling skills) or a point guard (lacks playmaking ability, laterals and ballhandling skills) and too undersized to be a small forward. He is too thin even against Dominican and Italian guards.

Imagine him guarding Gelvis Solano or handling the ball with Victor Liz on his face.

what do you expect from King of Hot Takes , ,my words are like its the gospel truth SADIK, he was like that in PEX that's why he ran here to spout his nonsense, he left that forum because he was the butt of jokes among the posters because of his hot takes, overhyping and he often fights with other posters

I have no idea what you're blabbering about.

Good video on AJ Edu by Bakits https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssfiUaA0bhM.

Good: Still sound defender. Still mobile laterally despite all the injuries

Bad: Offensive touch has gone specially outside.

It seems the knee injuries have affected Edu's shot. He was good in Batang Gilas from outside. In his first year in college, he did not have a good percentage but his form was not bad. But after the injuries, his form looks like it has no chance of getting in.

The good thing about this is we can rely on him for defense. The bad thing is he won't be able to play PF because he has zero outside shooting. So it means Japeth is our sole option at the big PF role. Junemar + Edu or Kai + Edu will be almost impossible because of zero spacing, unless Kai or Junemar start hitting 3s in actual games.
