Philippines 71 – Ramos 16, T. Ravena 9, Brownlee 8, Perez 7, K. Ravena 6, Abando 5, Erram 5, Aguilar 5, Fajardo 5, Malonzo 3, Newsome 2.

Quarters: 29-14; 49-35; 64-59; 81-71

With Hachimura out of the World Cup, how do you think a Gilas team with about 2 months of preparation & with Clarkson & Kai stands against a Hachimura-less Japan team in case these two team clashes?

PHL will be advantage vs Hachimura less Japan.... They were slaughtered by Iran twice last year w/ only Watanabe led Japan team... And if many says Iran are already weakened squad since Haddadi is already twilight in his career and lose to Jordan in QF last year's FIBA Asia cup, who also lose to Gilas on their home in 5th window w/o JC then you will know the answer....

Makes sense for Rui. His Olympic experience screwed him up mentally. Had to miss a few months of the season.

Rui is always not committal to Japan since 2021 Olympics... He never get any contact or communication w/ JBA officials since then...

Damn I thought maybe one of two were 20, 21 but half the team is 21. I know this is not the final squad but it doesn’t look good when half this team is probably in the final lineup. Not to mention a few months left to build cohesion.

Gilas players

Junemar - 6'10 (33)
Japeth - 6'9 (36)
Erram - 6'7 (33)
Brownlee - 6'6 (35)
Malonzo - 6'5 (26)
Dwight - 6'4 (24)
Thirdy - 6'2 (26)
Abando - 6'2 (25)
Newsome - 6'2 (32)
Perez - 6'1 (29)
Kiefer - 5'11 (29)

I think Gilas is as tall as those players from Estonia, even taller. However, this team looked old and slow, considering 5 players are already in their 30's.

I think AJ Edu (22), Kai Sotto (21), Jordan Heading (26) could give this team some youthfulness while Ray Parks (30) and Jordan Clarkson (31) could give this team some scoring options.

Too bad, Tamayo (23) is out. Kouame (25) is still in the Philippines, I believe.

For me, it is not the size that is important but the proper mix of youthfulness and experience. Junemar, Japeth and Erram have no business to be part of the pool. These guys are already old and slower than their usual. Newsome should remain since Gilas has a shallow PG rotation while Brownlee is the contingency in case Jordan Clarkson decides to opt out. IMO, Gilas should now bank on Kai-Edu-Kouame frontcourt trio.

- Taavi Jurkatamm has been a pro for two years.
- Joonas Riisma has been a pro for three years.
- Kasper Suurorg has been a pro for six years.
- Mikk Jurkatamm has been a pro for five years.
- Sverre Aav has been a pro for two years.
- Kristen Kasemets has been a pro for four years.
- Ron Pehka has been a pro for nine years.

Yes, many of them started their pro careers - two of them started their pro careers at age 15.

Don't be deceived by their age. They maybe young but many of them have been gaining pro experience since their teens.

I watched the replay of the 3rd quarter of the Gilas-Estonia tune-up game. At around 6 mins. in the 3rd quarter, I saw Junmar bungled an easy undergoal stab. Man that was a gimme! An easy shot right there that Junmar throw away. Halata talagang na intimidate. I think that has been the problem of Junmar in the FIBA game - he easily gets intimidated by the size of the opponent. Nasanay kasi sa PBA against 6-foot-6 local bigs in which he could easily overpower. But if matched up against 6-foot-9 & above bigs in FIBA, nag iiba na ang laro ni Junmar.

That's the reason why I was puzzled when Junemar laughed at AVO one time when AVO attempted to muscle his way to the basket during the garbage time. He has been almost like AVO in international competitions. He has a few good games but, for the majority, he s*cks bigtime.

Basically our big men is a huge question mark for WC level, the game vs China classification round could be the playoff game for the sole Asian Olympic spot, can we realistically win with the bigs we have available, this is the big question mark.

Do remember we had Blatche previously.. especially a 2014 NBA level fit Blatche.

Iran possibly have a chance to steal the spot in Asia for Olympics... Brazil might be higher rank than DR but the latter is more stronger especially if KAT suits for them... And Ivory Coast is very beatable for Iran... Another thing, If they can't make it to the 2nd round, They will have another chance since they will likely beat Lebanon (possibly w/o Arakji) in classification game... If Iran and either Gilas or China gets 2-3 record after classification, Only quotient will decide who will take the Olympic spot in Asia... That means Gilas should not give up early in case if they were blown out early against Italy and DR... They need to lessen the lead into manageable quotient system (12 - 15 pt loss is already achievable)... If Gilas lose to Italy or DR in a very big margin, Their chances on getting Olympic spot will be lessen... They should get any points even garbage time to less the quotient loss points they have...

Preinjury heavy Junemar actually can score against Fiba competition using his floater off of one leg. He used it to score double digits in many games culminating in the Oz game. But post leg break he doesnt trust his one leg anymore. Those floaters, the PBA eurosteps, are actually what made him a dynamic scorer. Unfortunately, those moves, it turned out put undue pressure in his legs. Who couldve known that weighing close to 300 pounds, playing close to 40 minutes would put undue pressure on his legs.

Light Junemar could have been more of a mid range guy, like what he showed in some games in 2014 WC. But yes not under the basket. That is why JF was always an ill fit in Chots abangers offense. Ironically he had a decent scoring game in the OQT under Tab.

I say good luck with that. But I agree, a less than 20 points loss against Italy NT will be big for us. They have always kicked PH NT's ass (whoever was the coach) dating back from the 2002 tune-up game.

I am surprised on how beatable estonia eas considering teams like us Japan chose taipei as their first game..the team we faced is quite high level

Yeah.. Any European team is always a quality team... They should find more opponents from Europe to strengthen their quality before the WC...

I say even the 3rd tier teams in Europe would be very difficult opponents by top Asian teams. Iceland for instance is no slouch. Iceland beat a Gilas team with Dray Blatche & Tab Baldwin as coach in a pocket tournament in 2015.
