Understandable IMO. Watanabe too I believe is a free agent and is looking to get paid as he's on his late 20s already.

I dunno why people are questioning his decision. It could cost him millions of dollars. If ever a pinoy player makes it in the NBA and is negotiating with that kind of money and is being sought after by the big market teams everyone here would be celebrating.

Bad news indeed for japan but good news for every Asian teams.. especially gilas… this is big blow for Japan… they will be the Asian version of Canada, best team/line up on paper but can’t be completed in any international competitions.. don’t tell me about that he will prioritize Olympics since Japan is not good enough to qualify for Olympics via OQT… they will wait again in 2027-2028 cycle if in case they are available that time… but for sure we will never know if Japan still interested in him in the future… that means the Asian spot for Olympics will be toss up between Philippines, China and Iran (yes because they have also a favorable group)… Lebanon will likely w/o arakji due to injury, jordan are messed up with their groupmates… and japan that also have group of death scenario plus they will play w/o hachimura

Hachimura begs off

https://www.spin.ph/basketball/fiba...l-world-cup-a795-20230627?ref=home_featured_1

The Japanese Basketball Association announced the unavailability of Hachimura in a press release.

The release said Hachimura is still working on his NBA contract. The Los Angeles Lakers forward becomes a restricted free agent this offseason.

"After comprehensive consideration, we have accepted his wishes and have decided not to invite him to the Japan national team this summer," said the JBA in a statement.

Actually this is BS… the free agency dates are from July 1-10… the World Cup is in August… I think hachimura has other reasons why he doesn’t want to play… rumors that he doesn’t want to play for Japan due to some reasons regarding with his appearance, some of his teammates doesn’t like him and he hasn’t contact any JBA officials since 2021 Olympics… there is having not good relationship between Rio’s camp and JBA officials (ala holford and DR situation)…

I think NZ pathway to Olympics is through the OQT,
and hopefully Adams and Mojave king play in OQT.

The likely 12 would be if they dont get other players
1. Kai C
2. Japeth C
3. Edu C
4. Malonzo PF
5. Ramos SF/PF
6. JC SF/SG
7. CJ SG
8. Abando SG
9. Newsome SG/PG
10. Scottie PG
11. Kiefer PG

Among those in the pool but not in Estonia I would get Carl and Heading for Abando.

With the lack of PFs in the pool I think they would try make Edu play PF. The Kai Japeth pairing was clunky. I dont think Edu as PF will work also even Poy. They might get Tratter from the PBA.

If healthy will Parks and Heading make a Chot team?

are they that much better than Newsome and CJ if they come in late ?

Parks for Abando & Heading for Newsome. I actually liked what I saw from Newsome in the recent SEA Games, but I think he will just duplicate CJ Perez. Also age is his downside if compared to Heading. Agree about Tratter, I think he is a good replacement for Carl Tamayo. Not saying they have similar playing style/capabilities.

And yeah, I won't pick Junmar in the final-12 man roster.

With Hachimura out of the World Cup, how do you think a Gilas team with about 2 months of preparation & with Clarkson & Kai stands against a Hachimura-less Japan team in case these two team clashes?

We play Estonia in a tune up match in a few hours.

Anyone know what kind of team Estonia is fielding?

If the plan is to add additional soul for our ill-fated FIBA WC bound team after their European sojourn, I’m still hoping that the likes of ff. should be included in the training pool because were also preparing for the coming 2023 AG as well.(assuming those SBP heads wake up in right side of the bed in the coming days).
6’8 Justine Baltazar
6’2 Maverick Ahamissi (FIBA eligible)
6’5 Abu Tratter (I also agree on his inclusion; FIBA eligible)
6’7 Brandon Ganuelas Rosser (AG eligible)
6’2 Sedrick Barefield ( AG eligible)

Seriously!? 6'5" Tratter in the worlds!? haha A big who is 6'5" on a good day to go against the best of the world?

for the sake of providing warm bodies during training that is why I choose Abu as one of those souls but if worse come to worse and some of our suppose final 12 aren't healthy enough to compete because of some unforeseen events a few days or weeks prior to the actual day of the tournament, we have no other choice but to include him.

The 4 importtant players of Gilas is holding the team hostage.. brownlee cant play with the team

Gilas already down 20 to the Estonia YOUTH team - most of their players are no older than 21.

Chot Reyes is the worst thing ever to happen to Philippine basketball.
