Fiba World Cup 2023 Philippines

I hope it's limited only to FIBA-fit players. I have only Perez,Terrence, Bolick, Oftana, and possibly Arvin Tolentino in mind. The rest should come outside the PBA.

To be honest, The Only 4 Players I will consider In Coach Tab's Core as Shoo ins (Locals Only) are:

Kai, Dwight, Baltazar, Tamayo.

Honestly, only TNT player who have an impact is Kib Montalbo.. While Troy and Erram still contributed not just points, but not as impact as Tamayo or Baltazar... Pogoy was badly outplayed by Thirdy and Ramos (but he's not yet 100%, so he has some alibis out there).. But they still representing our country, so don't be harsh on Chot, TNT and SBP... The real battle is the 2023 WC...

I agree and I only see 5 of them worthy to be called in that real battle. None of them come from TNT.

Pangmalakasan. And you still have kai, edu, NP, Carl, Balti & ( 2 coming from the pba). Assuming carl and balti would play overseas.

The two PBA guys on my mind are Bolick and Oftana.

Bolick is included already on the first 5 mentioned.

Same bet here. Bolick and Oftana are the only PBA players worthy for Gilas.

So from this conversation, we'd have this lineup or pool for the WC:

Guards: Bolick, Dwight, Mikey (if approved as local)/Kiefer, (Clarkson)
Wings: Thirdy, Navarro, Oftana
Forwards: Tamayo, Baltazar
Bigs: Kai, AJ, (Kouame)

Decent lineup, but let's see if this is the best, or we can find better.

I'd replace Pogoy with Oftana. Going with size and upside here. Honestly, I'd add another playmaking guard, which is where Kiefer comes into play. Dunno who Kiefer will replace, though. Perez or Troy?

In regards to Baltazar and Tamayo. Only 1 of them will probably get a consideration. But since Baltazar is the more experienced player, I would go for Baltazar.

I think both should be in. We'll need some at the forward positions. In my opinion, Tamayo's better for FIBA play than Troy or Erram at the 4, at least from what he's shown. Erram does provide more rim protection and interior D, though.

If the cut would be in favor of Erram or Oftana or Navarro, or even Japeth, that would be fine with me, honestly.

I'd leave Troy out first, because the only asset he has offered is activity on the boards, which Erram and Balti can provide, and both are better defenders.

It's tough to choose between the remaining three, though.

Erram and Baltazar almost play the same position with the latter having the better offensive skill set. Troy will be a close 3rd.

Tamayo has not play enough in seniors play. Not enough reps.

Lopez is just an athlete at this point. Lots of motor. But he lacks experience and reps to play a combo or hybrid forward in a Chot Reyes syatem.

tamayo and baltazar for sure.

i do wish that gilas will have like months and months of training in europe and australia leading to 2023. but at this point i dont think it would happen. maybe they will just hold practice games with PBA teams leading to 2023.

I think the most improved is Thirdy, among the three. Oftana has spent considerable time being Yeng's go-to defender on SFs, and sometimes SGs, but dunno about his shooting. Efficient player, though. Navarro, I think has stagnated.

He tied Caidic' record I think for most 3s made by a rookie in a game. His shooting is fine. I still think all 3 should be in the pool as they are completely different players who each bring something unique to the table

Thanks for the reassurance re: Oftana. Remembered that he was shooting well this conferenxe before the injury. At least we get a floor spacing wing. He might fit Chot's dribble-drive. Just needs to tighten his handle?

IF u ask me early last year. I would not even included Thirdy. But I guess he deserved to be at least in the pool with his improvements and production.
