If we are looking for a wing that could defend the sf position really well, then Oftana is your guy. He has both the quickness and the laterals to keep up even with smaller guys playing the 2 and reads passing lanes well. Wouldn’t comment whether he’s a better wing defender than Dwight as I haven’t seen enough of Ramos esp in his latest NCAA D2 stint wherein he is already listed as a small forward.

People who are concerned about Oftana’s wing skills due to him playing primarily the 4 in Beda simply hasn’t seen enough of him. I don’t think you could ever see someone of his height run the floor like he does, perhaps not even in the PBA. Dillinger maybe, but Oftana offers more ceiling thanks to his reliable 3 ball (at the 40% range, last humblebola stats link somebody posted months back).

If we are to spend the np slot on eligibles to address the “perceived” lack of depth in the 3 spot, I think we better not. Let’s give first this kid a shot, along with Paras and Ramos. I am positive they could hold the fort and save ourselves an NP slot we could use for the likes of Clarkson.

Just like Clarkson, Calvin Oftana has a background in track and field(100 meters dash)..

Failed to see the Oftana shooting stats but came across this article instead. Good read.

Nice takeaway regarding Oftana is that pundits regard his defense as his calling card. The writer believes he can guard the positions 1-4 “astoundingly”, but for gilas context it is enough that he does really well guarding the 2/3 and offer some kind of resistance vs the pg and pf spots. Very few players not named Gabe Norwood could lay stake to that claim.

Also intriguing is the writer went on to say Oftana might come as a surprise to be in that list. That goes to show how underrated he is...! Dickel should really insist on his take on Oftana and have him on the pool. GIVE THIS KID A CHANCE TO PROVE HIMSELF. If he’s not worth it, then so be it.

NCAA star players(current and former) are underrated compare to UAAP star players. And also homegrown talents are also underrated compare to Filipinos-raised in abroad..

Definitely not at this extent. CJ Perez was already making noise even as a cut player from Ateneo. The Beast was arguably the most popular collegiate player in his Pinatubo trio heyday. Scottie Thompson was a household name in college hoops, together with The Bus Driver.

Perhaps this is just the beginning for Oftana, fresh out of the shadows of Bolick and Mocon. It doesn’t help that he is as meek as a lamb and you’d find it hard to see him involved in a controversy or scuffle.

It probably has something to do with the perception that RLs are just good system players who relies on 'imports'. Except for Bolick who's got a colorful personality, the masa can't really relate to them.

They should play in Japan B-League if there will be an offer from B-League's teams. Rhenz Abando, Anton Eusebio and Cavin Oftana to play the 2 position, Koko Paras the 3 position while Baltazar the 4 position..

Just at a level of competition, will B League give the level of competition that are players will need to be competitive in World level competition.

Of the write up is yrue then we may have found a legit sized 3 and D defender, Him, Kobe and Ramos will more than make the shitnout of the lifenof opposing SF...Oftana has the length, Kobe has the strength and Ramos has the quickness to more than answer the call to fldefend the wingers by committee and relieve Clarkson of the duty in order for him to focus on offense...

Ayun. If our wings aren't serviceable by themselves, they can be at least serviceable by committee.

Japan B-League may not be a world level competition but they will consistently play against imports with no height restriction and B-League has a real off-season. Also big possibility that Koko, Calvin and Anton will play as a swing(2 and 3 position) and will got to use on playing motion offense and not one-on-one offense or bara-bara systems of some PBA teams..

You can rest assure that piece regarding Oftana is not exaggerated nor biased. Batungbacal (the writer) is an Atenean and I think he gave everybody a fair shake including UST’s Abando.

Watching Oftana’s games and video clips would also give you enough sample size for the eye test. He is a lot quicker even compared to smaller guys who play the wings and forward spots in the PBA. Guys like Ferrer, Belo, Pogoy, Trollano, Borboran etc would have a hard time keeping in step with him both in open court and half court sets. He is a legit wing with a wide array of skillset.

Japeth will not play for Baldwin led teams.. He's in trauma after he was benched by Baldwin in 2016.. Japeth's days in Gilas is over now.. It will be Greg vs Junmar for the back up spot for center position.. I think also we need another stretch 4 aside from Troy.. could be Baltazar is the guy for that spot.. or could be JP Erram.. While many here don't like Kiefer eh I will put him over Bolick.. Kiefer is better playmaker and good defender than Bolick.. We need a playmaker in the line up..

Wouldn’t say Kiefer to be a better defender compared to Bolick. In the WC opposing PGs can’t turn the corner vs Bolick and he is very good laterally he can stay in front of his man. Kiefer is the more physical defender, but fundamentally, Bolick is better.

In the end, Kiefer just might get the nod because of familiarity. For me though, given the time frame, I would choose someone that has already proven he can help the team in that level, and that’s Bolick.

Agree on Baltazar. Put him in the pool and baptize him already internationally.

But Kiefer is the captain on this program.. He has so many hater, including here at IBF.. but he will be in the final line, whether we like it or not...

I don’t think that’s set in stone. There is just one, real captain of this program and that is Tab. It is still a long way to go, and with the abundance of option in the PG slot, I think everyone has to earn their spot in the final lineup.

Heck, one can argue even Tab isn’t assured of his place for the 2023 WC. One more controversy and he might not end up losing something bigger than his TnT job.

Pre injury Bolick has sneaky athleticism. He's really quick and agile.

The problem is we don't know if he's still the same player. Especially with this pandemic which might have affected his rehabilitation

That's interesting , we need athletes, the earlier we expose him to FIBA and the wing position full time the better

i'm 100 % confident if Oftana is as advertised he will be invited, in discussions i always hear MVP pushing for San Beda players to be included , Oftana will be no different

Because of common backer, not suprise if there will be Mendiola based players in pool. Logistics/transpo to Katipunan will be a concern. Kung ako sa kanila, just take the LRT2 to cut time.

Of course! Since High School he has been practicing with TNT eh.

reality is any coach would want a PG who actually has been running their schemes, how do you get the team familiar with the proposed system and play if you don't have a player that actually practices with the team for prolonged period (ang hirap naman yun, parang old sistema ng PBA hugot

Did we watch the same 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup? Because there were only 2 locals who played creditably, Bolick and CJ Perez. And there was a certain "playmaker" who, almost everyone cursed very minute he was on the floor, not for any personal reasons. His idea of playmaking is going iso every closing moment of a quarter.

I don’t see how the phillipines can compete at this 2023 WC. I think it will be a similar result to 2019.
Pity the tournament wasn’t held in 2027 where I think the phillipines would have climbed the rankings a little by then.

Actually, this 2023 WC qualifiers will be the perfect time for us to focus more on player development and exposure. We're the hosts, so we can't be eliminated (unless FIBA imposes a condition for us to qualify as hosts). Once the right players get exposure and seasoning, we may have a slight chance of competing.

We have two years after the Asia Cup, and some young players show promise. Just need to help them develop into quality players fit for international play.

And, yeah, come to think of it, we have a better chance of competing in 2027. That is, if everything pans out.
