FIBA, the world governing body for basketball, announced that vuvuzela will be banned for the 2010 World Basketball Championship, world's biggest international basketball event to take place in Turkey this August and September.

Vuvuzela, a deafening plastic trumpet which emits a sound equivalent to 127 decibels, is an instrument based on South African horns. It had become a controversy at the recent 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa after it received complaints from television viewers and players.

FIBA banned vuvuzela at halls during the upcoming championship due to health risks, Turkish Basketball Federation said in a statement posted on its website.

FIBA asked fans not to bring these controversial instruments to games and warned that security teams would confiscate vuvuzelas at the entrance of halls.

FIBA has become the first international sports federation to officially ban vuvuzela. The ban includes also other air horns.

FIBA Secretary-General Patrick Baumann said that vuvuzela was not suitable for indoor use. Baumann said the noisy instrument could also cause problems for communication of referees during matches.

2010 World Basketball Championship will take place in four Turkish provinces --İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir and Kayseri-- from August 28 to September 12. It is expected to draw 350,000 spectators and over 1 billion TV viewers.

On a side note, did anyone do a double take at the "1 billion TV viewers" part? :p

Thank goodness about the Vuvuzelas.

About the 1 billion viewers, either they're alarmingly optimistic about Chinese viewership or they have no sense at all.

Could it be? Did FIBA finally do something right for a change? How can this be lol.

I hope this includes those damn little horns that were in use in Poland, they are damn annoying as well.

stupid decision..
if you want to enjoy the silence go to theatre...
should they ban drums as well?
what is next? clapping?

LOL are you for real?
yes, I am.. I don't have a problem with those..
besides, tell me on which basketball game did you hear vuvuzelas..
does are mostly sirens in cans..
now we will be hearing deafening sound of sneakers on parquet.. especially on NT games.. great..

You can always buy yourself a vuvuzela and blow it yourself at home while watching. :)

I'll admit that I hated the vuvuzelas at first, but they've "grown on me." It's a fun fad that won't last very long, but why ban them? If I wanted to sit like a rock at a sports game, I'd watch tennis.

They probably don't mean unique TV viewers. They just mean 76 games * 13 million TV viewers per game = 1 billion.

I don't understand this mindset, Vuvuzelas are barely in any basketball game, so why would it's banning lead to Basketball being like tennis? It's banning doesn't effect crowd noise at all. It only prevents the game sounding like an annoying ever present hive of bees.

Vuvuzelas are, like, a cultural thing. You wouldn't understand. You're from Detroit.

So are they like a mourning wail for the city of Cleveland every time something horrible happens? How in the world does this pertain to Turkey? :p

Yeah, very good decision, especially for the bold part. There were no vuvuzelas so far maybe but those horns are terrible in every way imaginable. Especially little kids like them, and they make you feel guilty as you want to slap their head and throw them all down the stairs.
