Date change in COCABA Championship
CANCÚN (Campeonato COCABA) - The Central American Basketball Confederation decided to allow the organizing committee of the COCABA Championship to change the date of the tournament.

The event that will be played in Cancun at Gimnasio Polifuncional has been confirmed from August 10-14. Originally this event was scheduled to be played from August 5-9 but some problems didn't allow to start it on that date.

This event is the first step in order to qualify for the 2012 Olympics in London. The first three teams will play in the 2010 Centrobasket Tournament which is a qualifier for the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship.

Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Jamaica, British Virgin Islands and Cuba qualified for the 2010 Centrobasket Tournament.

The organizing committee thanked the authorities for allowing the date of the tournament to be changed.

The eight participating countries in the COCABA Tournament are: México, Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

It's ridiculous that they can change the dates so close to the start of the tournament, surely teams had already made travel arrangements, not to mention players based in the US or elsewhere, lots of the guys in this tournament are not pros and can't just change their schedules on short notice.

Just goes to show you that some regions and areas still have a long ways to go. I believe that this tournament's initial start date wasn't even set until a month or two ago.

Report on some of the US-based players trying out for the Belize team:

http://www.7newsbelize.com/sstory.php?nid=14533

This caught my eye at the bottom of the article:

And you did hear correctly, 20 year old Kyron Stokes is the nephew of Milton Palacio though the two have never met. They will meet for the first time next week when Milt along with Sony Watson, Marlon Garnett, Darwin Carter, and Alex Carcamo are expected to arrive.

If all those guys show up, this will be a very strong team...I don't think Palacio has played for them since the 1999 Centrobasket.

Considering the timing of the announcement of the tournament date change and the announcement that Najera and Watson would be playing, I wonder if the tournament was really moved in order to accomodate their schedules. And to throw off the schedules of some rival players.

Another article with quotes from the Belize coach and some players:

Panama will be missing players in the Cocaba Tournament: Jamie Lloreda, Gary Forbes, Ernesto Oglivie,Dionisio Gomez and Jamaal Levy wont be playing while DJ Pinnock is coming in shortly before the tournament starts.

Mexico is waiting on Lorenzo Mata, Romel Beck and Gustavo Ayon. I doubt that Najera and Watson will be playing in Cancun.

And while the team is ready for blast-off, reports to our newsroom are that all is not well in Basketball-land as the organizers of the tournament in Mexico have reportedly mounted a last minute challenge to the nationality of a number of the Belizean players.

It’s patently bogus because section 23 of the constitution makes it clear that they are all Belizeans by virtue of descent – since every player on the team has at least one Belizean parent. But the FIBA organizers – who may be not too happy with the threat of an unusually talented Belizean roster – have taken a different interpretation of the constitution. We understand that last hour efforts are being made at this time to have the constitutional position officially clarified by government’s legal advisor.

Regardless of what happens, the team departs for Cancun on Sunday on Maya Airlines and the matter of who makes it unto the roster will be settled – or unsettled - by Sunday night.

Costa Rica team:

Daniel Simmons
Cristian Chavarria
Clifford Smith
Jefferson Dixon
David Carnegie
Pablo Alvarado
Felipe Wing Ching
Jackie Acuna
Hernol Gardener
Jeffry Spencer
Alonso Sanchez
Gabriel Quesada

No Henry Martinez but Smith and Gardener are back for the first time in a while.

Honduras:

Jose Luis Lopez
Albin Cacho
Octavio Matamoros
Mario Amador
Omar Steven Cacho
Jerry Echenique
Cesar Estling
Erlin Marlin Gonzalez
Pedro Salazar
Michael Martinez
Joseph Flower
Selvin Miranda

Watching Belizean morning show through the internet (brought to you by One Barrel Rum--"it keeps the economy moving and it's smooth taste keeps you grooving") and there is still a dispute over the nationality of the players. Someone is claiming that they have more than one naturalized player while the Belizeans say that all the players have Belizean parents and are entitled to citizenship from birth.

Allegedly there is at least one other team whose players are also being challenged.

Belize basketball's legal advisor is "flabbergasted by the sloppiness on FIBA's side".

Hello guys!

would have a few questions...

Belize realistic chances 3.placed or no? Panama,Mexico, and Costa Rica clearly better than Belize i think...

today match:

Panama-Guatemala. ok ,Panama many missing, but destroyed today poor Guatemalan team?

Mexico-Honduras. Two years ago,Mexico won 100 points,today same?

Costa-Rica and Belize clear win or hard game?

I new the forum, sorry many question, but waiting for the answers. THX :)

seems that there is no FIBA livescore available for this tournament... or am i wrong ??

and there will be links to live stats running across the top of the screen.

If everyone has all their players I would expect Mexico and Panama to be the top two and then Belize and Costa Rica to fight for third, Belize has a good lineup but mostly guys who haven't played for the team in many years or not at all. El Salvador and Guatemala could maybe pull off an upset, Nicaragua and Honduras are probably the two weakest.

FIBA-Americas having trouble with their live stats today...Nicaragua-Belize game froze in the middle of the second quarter and nothing from the U16 women. They have taken the links off their site.
