I haven't seen much of Justin Arana's game, but in the few games of Converge that I've watched it seems he doesn't have a 3-pt shot. But if he does have a medium range shot (15 to 18-foot jumper), then that's good. Also, I've seen his stats & his rebounding average is impressive. For instance, in last season's Philippine Cup, he averaged 7.8 rebs. per game in only 23 minutes per game.

It's his defense I'm a bit concerned with, not really the offensive skillset. At 6'7" in shoes, he has to be mobile to go along with his strength.

Thanks for reminding me on Bolick. Mikey's ineligible and is 32, but we can use an NP.

Long-term wise, I don't get the sense of forcing a lineup composed of mostly aging/old players, especially if it's against Taiwan and Hong Kong. Unless, the PBA can be open to some of their younger players playing in the windows. Schonny and Tuffin can contribute, and maybe Mamuyac and Tio can be potentially good pieces. Maybe Arana if he can play PF in FIBA. At 6'6" without shoes and a 6'9" wingspan, his size is best for 4.

I think its the thought of a poster here that after Gilas' gold medal finish in the 2023 Asian Games basketball, PBA & SBP would decide to send a PBA-select Gilas team to the 1st window of the Asia Cup qualifiers & won't enlist any B-league players in the Gilas team.

I think it would be an unwise decision by the SBP & PBA if they will force a PBA-select national team in February while ignoring all those B-league Gilas players. Gilas fans would cry foul if guys like Kai Sotto, Dwight Ramos, AJ Edu, Rhenz Abando (of KBL), etc., would be left out.

I think Arana was already with UST seniors in 2015, how old is he?

His strength is literally strength. Would be good to test if he could translate that internationally soon.

I think he can do well against Taipei and Hong Kong. His serious test will come from the Tall Blacks.

If Arana can play good defense, then I think he would be serviceable for Gilas. He could be some sort of a Mark Pingris.

He's getting Pingris comparisons. Ping was able to translate his strength internationally. If Arana can also do that, then he will be a good gilas player.

Taller version of Pingris. But I see semblance of Dennis Espino's game on him.

Bolick is itching to go and likes that extra competition,Mikey can be in one of the games specially if Brownlee is still a no go.They gotta insert some of the college standouts that had played in Batang Gilas before,I'm a little more confident now on the 2 and small 3 position internationally, the big 3 if either Tamayo or Baltazar or both can play the combo forward.

Its becoz Pingris had exceptional defense & his energy & tenacity were really up there. Ping was what, 6-foot-4? But he can defend big guys who were 3 to 4 inches taller than him. I remember Ping holding his own against the 6-foot-8 Korean-American big guy during the historic Gilas-South Korea semis game in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship.

Hope Arana's defense & tenacity would be somewhere close to that of a prime Pingris.

With Mikey's shady reputation, would you like him in Gilas uniform? I would rather try a Stephen Holt.

And Ping was also a good switch defender. At 6'4", he needed to be quick too for his defense to be truly an asset. Good for him that he had the good combination of quickness, leaping ability, strength, and motor.

This despite of Ping's shortcomings in offense. 3-pt shooting was non-existent & he didn't even have a mid-range jumper.

Money is a big motivation for this guy and SMC signs him, then they wanna showcase him.Stephen Holt is your backup if Mikey can't really play.

so far, it looks like he likes money. i dont blame him as his window of playing is starting to close. maybe less than 10years to go. other than money, what else makes his reputation shady?
if he gets paid and he delivers, whats the problem?

Maybe asking more than what he deserves is the problem. In short, greed.

While we know that professional basketball is mainly about money, there's a distinction between asking the amount one deserves ( yung sakto lang) & being too greedy. I feel Mikey Williams is more of the latter.

My point here is, if for instance Mikey ends up playing for any of the SMC teams in the PBA, if U invite him to play for Gilas, he'll demand a huge pay from the Gilas sponsor/s. And that pay could be much much bigger than each of the other Gilas player gets. For instance a Scottie Thompson gets 100K to play for a particular window, Mikey on the other hand would demand 800K.

I don't think he can demand more money than the standard pay for all SMC players that plays in any window,he won't have a choice once he signed with SMC,they owned even his soul until that contract expires.
