Alabama is a high level ncaa program..

Alabama is more of a football school. Current quarterbacks in the NFL came through Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide like Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Hurts and Mac Jones.

Without going through google, the only NBA player comes first on my mind that came from Alabama is Robert Horry.

it might be hard getting a way with Newsome and Thompson against better teams or on the road. That’s not enough shooting.

This version of NZL team was weak in defense, especially the guards, both Brit and Webster are weak defenders , traditionally NZ press , not this team, coach who just had 2 practices in Manila to prepare said focus was to introduce offensive system and relied on their non NBL players Brit and Corey.
overall an acceptable 1st outing for NZ with 2 practices, but fans will not be forgiving if they lose In February..
NZL needs to add pieces in the 4 year cycle , and it's simply not most of these players, except 5. Corey Webster is retiring next year so need a replacement shooter . Team also missed physical low post bigs Wetzell, Fotu , Manenga , and defensive forwards Te Rangi and Dalaney absence forced them to use inexperience Brown (30 mins )

Its not unusual for NZ to shoot well, they really hunt for 3's. In 2019 World cup they were 2nd in pts scored avaerage

All credit to Gilas, they have arrived and are a world level team now ( 2nd tier Americas level)

2023 World Cup : finished 22nd among 32 teams

Reuben Te Rangi (C), Izayah Le'afa, Finn Delany, Taylor Britt, Shea Ili, Yanni Wetzell, Flynn Cameron, Tohi Smith-Milner, Jordan Ngatai, Hyrum Harris, Walter Brown, Isaac Fotu.

I don't understand how some people call that NZ team Gilas defeated last night a Team B. This is their WC lineup and Lli, Ngatai, and Fotu are the only missing key ones. Which to be honest a degrade if we are going to replace Waardenberg over Fotu. Ngatai on the other hand is that bearded-guy whom Francis Lopez got heated on, and he can be easily check by a healthy Jamie Malonzo. Webster is literally an upgrade over Lli.

Mennenga is gone, so is Edu. Also, Waardenberg is their arguably best big right now who is averaging 15ppg in NBL Australia. I think their team last night is the best Team they had over these past few years but its just that they were on rebuilding mode.

Well, Tim Cone is known for giving up three point shots in exchange of protecting the paint. Not surprising to be honest. However, he needs to limit a little more since FIBA game is really a perimeter oriented game.

He’s shown he’s able to do this when he defeated Goorjian’s Bay Area Dragons in the PBA finals. That time he had the proper tools: a big who wasn’t a liability on defense (CStan) and a bunch of relatively tall, long, and mobile wings who could defend the perimeter and disrupt the passing lanes (JB, Malonzo, Grey)

Let's dive to the possible of this Eastern qualifiers:

Group A

Will qualify

Australia
South Korea

Third place

Thailand

Group B

Will qualify

Philippines
New Zealand

Third place

Chinese-Taipei

Group C

Will qualify

Japan
China

Third place

Guam

Battle of the third placers:

Chinese-Taipei 2-0
Guam 1-1
Thailand 0-2

Chinese-Taipei will surely beat Thailand and will most likely beat Guam. The team they have fielded last night looks like an upgrade than the ones in the first window. Gilbeck and Abasi will make Taipei atleast a decent team against top teams (Australia, NZL, Japan, China, Lebanon and the Philippines), an equal to teams like Jordan, Iran and South Korea and a superior team against the rest in the region.

Guam needs to change their game. Their matador one-on-one and running game, where they rely on physical strength, will not work against better team as already shown on their games against Japan and China.

Thailand needs to go all-out with Lamb, Morgan, Bruenig, Lish and Ejesu all playing if they want to qualify.

wow I never thought we handedly defeat a team who made 18 threes.. so is japan 3 point juggernaut really enough to beat gilas?

More often than not, opponents of PHL shoot above 50% from 3. NZ the first one to lose vs PHL while making most of their 3s.

Which teams did shoot above 50% 3pts over us in a FIBA World level tournament

for me, not 50% threshold since it could be misleading. a team may only attempt 10 shots and make 5 to get the 50%.

the better threshold is if the opposing team makes atleast 10 or 15 3pt shots in the game.

Here's the 3-point record of our WC and OQT opponents since the 2019 WC:

2019 World Cup:
Italy: 15-31
Serbia: 12-22
Angola: 9-25
Tunisia: 11-26
Iran: 8-18

2021 OQT:
Serbia: 9-26
Dominican Republic: 9-28

2023 World Cup:
Dominican Republic: 6-28
Angola: 9-31
Italy: 17-41
South Sudan: 12-33
China: 5-22

2024 OQT:
Latvia: 10-42
Georgia: 13-35
Brazil: 8-28

Well, our 3-point defense has been better nowadays. It hasn't gone to the point where a team can shoot 50% against us there, like last night and when SoKor made 16 of 21 threes in 2017.

And besides, NZ (specifically Corey Webster and Sam Waardenburg) were making contested threes too.

I don't know of it is just me but I observe that Japan loves to size up their opponents early in the game and make a run later on.

NZ was simply shooting lights out. No defense will be good enough to stop that kung talagang buwenas.

Vodanovich (6'7) is a good example for what our local 6'7 dudes should pattern their game after if they don't have insane talent and athleticism.

Shoots lights out and works hard on the interior to grab rebounds.

Tamayo should take down notes from Vodanovich. Same height, same frame and both loves to play from the perimeter.

It's probably a result of scouting and in-game adjustments. Gameplan of opposing teams would always be, defend 3-pt shooters and take advantage of their small guards.

How effective the opposing teams are able to do that is only found out once the game transpires. Then comes adjustments.

And if their shooters get hot and consistently hit logo shots, players will tend to try to match that and game play gets rushed.

Kaya nga unless your steven adams waandenberg and harrison anfe best nz bigs movibg forwaed not delaney and fotu...

I think Indonesia has a shot beating Thailand this Sunday... They are playing at home and have better roster.. but Indonesia needs to beat Thailand 17 or more points to steal that 3rd place.. or else Indonesia have to beat either Australia or Korea to advance which is way harder...

Japan will not make contested threes over scottie, ramos, newsome, oftana. They will have to do it off screens. A good man to man will shut them down. Believe me, newsome will shut kawamura down. My concern is watanabe, hachi and the work rate of hawkinson.

The thing that they are overlooking on Japan is that their guards and the wings (1, 2 and 3) are close to three-level scorers - they can drive, they can go midrange and shoot from the three. They also have smooth handles (Korean guards are pretty stiffed ballhandlers) and pretty quick.

Indonesians should stop counting on DMX and Bolden. They are not always available. IMO, they should process Dame Diagne's clearance as a local. Vincent Kosasih can't handle the paint all by himself.

But Beane, Jawato, Grahita and Saputera are all speedsters.. Lish is the only guard can match up on them.. Beane dominates every Korean guards who are defending.. it's too hard for Lish to stop much bigger and more talented Beane... if Lamb and Morgan bros are there it will be better but it's unlucky that this crucial match they are not available.. Indonesia might win their match vs Thailand on Sunday at their home but the question will be they can beat Thailand by 17? That's the magic number for them..

Well, both teams have a slim to reach the FIBA-Asia Cup anyway since the possible third placers in other groups are Guam and Taipei.

Kawamura’s quickness translates even in the nba where even at half court, guards have a problem staying in front of him and he can beat his man off the dribble, his weakness is his finishing inside since he’s smaller, also his shooting efficiency isn’t that good by nba standards but we’ve seen in FIBA he can shoot over taller defenders.

I think a team on the rise after some years of struggle in Asian basketball is Chinese Taipei. The team is impressive in its game vs. Hongkong yesterday, beating Hongkong by a whopping 30 pts. This current CT team is significantly stronger than the one that played in the 1st window last February. The Taiwanese have a No. of promising young players including the 6-foot-2 Afro shooting guard Mohammed Gadiaga Bachir a. k. a. "Abbasi" who is playing in the japan B-league & 6-foot-3 combo guard Benson Lin who is playing in China CBA. These 2 are really promising guards. Waiting in pipeline are the very 2 Hinton brothers who are honing their skills in the US. Both are good size wings & are promising as well.

Chinese Taipei's Achilles heel remains to be in the big man position that's why their naturalized players are natural centers. It would be interesting to see the Chinese Taipei vs. New Zealand game a few days from now. It would be the real test for Chinese Taipei.
