This is a new NZ team, with a new coach, for the next 4 year Olympic cycle, it doesn't have their regular players, Ili, Tai, Te Rangi, Ngatai, Delaney , Fotu , Wetzell. , while Corey Webster is included , he actually already retired from the NBL ( does not have a contract these season), While many of the pool member are indeed team A players, they have very little experience playing together in FIBA, enclosed below are the players who have been playing well in the current NBL season and who you should watch out for

Top 5 Kiwi performances from Round 7 of NBL action....

PBA Finals is over. Our guys have time to rest before the window. Especially JB, Scottie, Oftana, and Japeth.

Yeah. It's better that the PBA Governor's Cup finals ended in game 6 instead of game 7 as JB, Iskati & Oftana will have a few days of rest before plunging into Gilas training for the 2nd window. Becoz if the finals would go to game 7, JB & company will hardly have any rest going into Gilas training.

No Jordan Heading for the 2nd window?

It's frustrating that Japeth is still considered for the 2nd window despite AJ Edu already available for the 2nd window. Gilas already have a solid frontline with Kai, Junmar, AJ Edu, Tamayo & JB (who plays both the 4 & 3 positions). It's the positions 1 & 2 na manipis tayo with Iskati, CJ Perez, Chris Newsome & Dwight Ramos. Coach Tim should have added Jordan Heading instead of keep on recalling Japeth for Gilas service despite his advanced age. I think it's time for coach Tim to retire Japeth Aguilar for good from the national team.

With June Mar, Kai, and AJ, we don't need Japeth that much. However, when one or two of Kai and AJ is unavailable, that's when we need another rim protecting big. That's when Japeth comes into play. However, Japeth's 37, and was subpar this Finals on both ends.

In the alternative, we need a good defensive wing who can at least prevent dribble penetration. JB can defend, but he's 36, and he couldn't stop some TNT PnR's in the Finals. Oftana was decent in the OQT on that end, team-defense wise, but I also noticed that he did stay connected after getting screened too. I rewatched some parts of the OQT games. Hope Malonzo can be a decent man-to-man defender. We will especially need that when JB retires.

I always believed that in forming a team you should have 5 players comprising the 5 & 4 positions, 5 players comprising the 1 & 2 positions. Of course there are players versatile enough to play at least 2 positions as in the cases of Justin Brownlee who plays both the 4 & 3 positions, Dwight Ramos able to play the 2, 3 spots & perhaps even the point guard spot, AJ Edu able to play both the center & 4 positions. Usually its the players playing the 3, 2 & 4 positions who are versatile.

My Gilas 12-man roster for the 2nd window would be like this:

Kai, Edu, Junmar at center (Edu can play the 4 spot)

Tamayo & JB at the four spot (JB can slide to the 3 spot)

Oftana & Quiambao at the 3 spot

CJ Perez, Newsome, Jordan Heading & Dwight Ramos at the 2-guard spot (Newsome & Heading can play as point guards while Dwight can play as a 3)

Iskati as the team's main point guard.

I think this is a more balanced line-up.

Add Amos for the 4 spot

or Japs for the 5 spot

just this window only

Maybe in the 3rd window we would be saying the same about Japeth - "just this window only"

And we might be saying that even in the 2027 FIBA World Cup qualifying windows.

Japeth had already retired from national team service after last year's Asian Games, right? But coach Tim had to recall him out of retirement in the 1st window becoz Gilas didn't have AJ Edu & Junmar last February so mejo manipis tayo sa frontline. But Junmar & AJ Edu are available for the 2nd window. So why call up Japeth again for the 2nd window? That's one spot being used to an old player who wouldn't be serviceable for Gilas in a few years time. That spot should have been given to a young & developing player instead.

That’s what happens when you’re too rigid and insistent on having a “12 player” pool.

I, personally, would include youngsters like Zain, Konov, Gagate, F. Lopez, and Raven Cortez.

Or even Navarro, Chiu, Heading, Abando, Bolick, etc.

The current system we have now is too politicized and biased in favor of GSM and SMC players.

I stand by what I said since the first window: it should have been a 16-18 player pool.

Let us stop the BS that nz has a new coach and a new team. He was a snr nt assistant since 2020 and a fixture in their NZ bball program. NZ fanboys would confessed here that NZ bball community is tight knit. They all know everyone and their system were always the same. They could plug and play anyone. Majority of their supposed rosters were already snr NT players. The notable omissions were already old and subpar.

This would be NZ team A against Gilas Team A. Stop making excuses beforehand. This is a formidable Nz team.

Come to think of it the difference between the roster of New Zealand and Gilss this month, is NZ is introducing new guys, the two Sam's, Cameron etc, including U17 4th place Goldman, with a new Head coach. (Don't know what to expect with the NZ new team), should be interesting to see what their new iteration of Nz team.lools like

While many of the their players have played FIBA, they actually have NOT played much together. (Webster hasnt played mich with LeAfa) and both Sam's have very limited FIBA experience.

The point is NZ is in rebuild testing a new coach and players, which is all good , which it's a new 4 year Olympic cycle

4 of 5 starters in both OQT and WC23 are absent ( Ili, Te Rangi, Delaney, Wetzell), note if Kiwi NBA draftees Adams and King joined they would be FIBA rookies LOL

if Gilas plays anything like in the OQT , they should easily beat this NZ team
