Newsome really is our best perimeter defender. The Taipei Ace was shooting 3s against Oftana. Then Newsome subbed and he never shot a 3 again well until he was matched again with Oftana.

Newsome is good at reading angles and positions himself well to deny passes to Cheng Liu plus he has good laterals to stay in front of his man. With his length and good size at the guard position he is indeed our best perimeter defender.

Ideally he can breakdown defenses. But his decision making still needs to improve.
he can still breakdown defenses but just couldn't finish, even against lower-tier opponents like in the sea games. i dunno what he's been doing in smb/pba, he was way better in the 2019 world cup

newsome's only weakness is his shooting..and his age. he'll be too old in 2027.
as for iskati, he's better off-ball in fiba alongside somebody like clarkson. he's not fit to be a primary playmaker

Despite his explosiveness and decent height for a local guard, his wingspan is actually subpar compared say to Calvin Abueva. He never developed craftiness or better handles to increase his layup percentage. In the PBA he gets away with it by being able to rebound his misses and putting them back. He can't do that internationally. In 2019 for some reason his accuracy on off timed layups was better. He shouldve improved on that by developing push shots or floaters. Instead he did not do anything. He didnt need that in the PBA where he is big enough to rebound his own miss.

I don't think Malonzo will be replaced any time soon. Remember, he's from coach Tim's Ginebra team, which means he knows the system just like Brownlee & Iskati Thompson. As I've said, in Asian level, I think Malonzo is serviceable.

Newsome in for Oftana. Our best perimeter defender.
Now we know why coach Tim Cone has high regard on Newsome. He's Gilas' new Gabe Norwood, a smaller Norwood that is.
Newsome's 3pt shooting is suspect, so is Norwood's. But Newsome has a respectable mid-range pull up jumper. Another thing I like about Newsome is that he is a good finisher on transition.

And CJ's defense is more of playing the passing lanes. Gets blown by in man-to-man, and is sometimes out of position.

FFS, just so you know... we're back on a regular calendar when events like the Olympics (after the OQT, SBP won't care about it unless Gilas pulls off a miracle, but it's this late July), SEA Games (Dec 2025), and Asian Games (Sept 2026) won't be postponed a year and are back to coincide with the the FIBA calendar (from Feb this year to the end of the FIBA World Cup in mid-Sept 2027 since the WC starts Aug 2027) with every other league where a Gilas core member plays. Fortunately, the hope is that Gilas still gets all the FIBA ineligibles to mix a few more rounds of one-week trainings for the SEA Games and Asian Games (kilala mo ba mga tinutukoy ko?) Obviously I know it's Day 2 and we're technically in the first month, but do you even know what the hell does the word CORE mean? O pati yan, tatagalugin ko pa sa'yo?
This is a very good team now because that's THE CORE in FEB '24 that comprises of AN ENTIRE TEAM for the OQT. This first window alone... no Edu, no JMF, no Malonzo for 1 game... and they only brought in Japeth. Based on the two games, they're a JB and Kai injury-away from looking like mediocre team. They don't have another world class shot creator not named Jordan Clarkson and until Edu or JMF are 100% (they never are), they don't have another big who can protect the rim and score inside. That's just in 2024 and maybe until the actual FIBA Asia Cup in August 2025. How about World Cup Qualifying that will definitely take place in between all those rows? Hindi mo pa rin ba gets? The way the core is setup, they will not wait for new players to be plugged-in unless they play for Ginebra or get invited by Tim Cone. This is and will be our national team in 3 and a half years whether we like it or not.

I'm already expecting another PBA Special Gilas Draft complete with Special Conference that will surely favor the usual PBA teams once the B.League players decide to come back home when the SBP finds itself unable to keep the core together.
Just recall your statement after 4 years... That is why CTC going into 4 year program, So that they will know each other and not being dependent on just other guys... Pinapangunahan mo agad eh, Nanggaling kanaba sa Future? You can bash CTC if he fails just like Chot in 2027... But for now, You have no right to tell about the current program of CTC because it just only Day 2 of being together..

Ano ba pinaglalaban mo? Actually you have a point, But CTC prefers team chemistry at this point.... Japeth is there because like what Nieto bros under Baldwin and Montalbo under Chot, He knows CTC system... Relax kalang dyan... Highblood ka masyado eh.... If they 100% master the system then we can say that we need new players for replacement for older ones....

he said the preparation for OQT is 10 days (23rd of june is the start of training). mentions PBA, uaap, b-league the reason why its only 10 because of releasing of players.. he focus on b-league because they don’t have control of for the release of players as soon as possible

*the season of b-league will finish right before may ends
