Watching the extended highlights of China and Mongolia, you will know that Mongolians have been playing for quite sometime now. Yes, they were beaten by 31 points but you see the skills there from the Mongolians with the way they handle the ball, pass and cut. I say that Mongolia is one naturalized bigman away from putting a decent game with better teams in Asia.
Guam is full of talented players but their system is pulling them down. Like Mongolia, Guamanians have game but they need to elevate their coaching. Their games against China and Japan will be an eye opener for them.

The disallowing of hard fouls when going to the basket. Used to be, when you attack the rim, you will get hit/fouled hard that you won't be able to do it in a consistent basis if you're skinny (unless you're crazy and durable like Iverson). Guys weren't even required to go for the ball, they can use their fouls however they want. Now, the defenders always have to be going for the ball and cannot hit excessively. I think that's a rational change for pba to make.
There are many other rule-changes but that one along with hand-check ban and freedom of movement is the biggest change in the nba.
Now, laterals are so important because you have to defend with your feet. In Asia, I think this is one of the reasons why China is in a decline, their players are so bad laterally (no soccer culture). Would probably be the case with us also if not for our Filfors.

Well, China still has a hard time defending the perimeter. Slow on closeouts, and cannot keep up with Japan's quick players. Lucky for them that they have a size advantage.

I mean, you have your perennial top teams like Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Korea, Iran, Lebanon, Philippines and Jordan.
You also have the usual mid-tiers like Taipei, Kazakhstan, Palestine, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Iraq.
But the lower-tier teams like Kuwait, UAE, Thailand, Indonesia and India are quite decent.
Even newcomers like Guam and Mongolia are decent. Hong Kong is considered a minnow in this qualifiers.
No more super minnows like Malaysia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka.

By my count, Edu and JMF are down by a game. Both should be healthy by the OQT's. Japeth playing makes this a 13-man pool so far. I don't think Perez should lose his spot yet despite forcing a lot of shots against a bad HK team. Tamayo was the shocktrooper of this game and that's fine since he'll get more FIBA games under his belt.
