I bet MVP won't do that.

Oftana, Newsome and Alas are there in this SMC led Asiad Gilas team.. So you know the answer.... plus they always lend Kouame too even he has rumors to play in Europe..

Japeth is doing the best that he can but he is playing out of position as PF. JB is not 100%. Maybe its just because the PBA doesnt allow physical defense on imports but JBs FG is atrocious. This team has decent defense but lacks offensive punch. The SMC team really needs to go beyond PBA players if it wants form competitive teams in the qualifiers.
But yeah, I have to agree on going beyond PBA players to form competitive teams. In the WC, it was mostly the exports that played well and kept us competitive, especially AJ Edu and Dwight Ramos.

Another reason is that most of the currently useful PBA players are old. We need new blood and be more selective with which older PBA players to line up.

Here's the ages of the PBA players:

1985 (38): Ross (NP for FIBA, local for Asiad)
1987 (36): Japeth, Marcio
1988 (35): Abueva, Brownlee (NP)
1989 (34): Tautuaa (NP for FIBA, local for Asiad), June Mar (November)
1990 (33): Newsome
1991 (32): Ahanmisi, Alas (November)
1992 (31): Terrence, Pogoy, Perkins (NP for FIBA, local for Asiad)
1993 (30): Scottie, Perez (November)
1995 (28): Arvin (November)
1996 (27): Oftana, Malonzo, Black (December)
1997 (26): Navarro, Tuffin
1998 (25): Tio
1999 (24): Mamuyac

Non-PBA players who have played for Gilas are as follows:

1995 (28): Bolick
1996 (27): Heading, Thirdy
1997 (26): Balti, Ange (December; NP)
1998 (25): Dwight
1999 (24): SJ, RJ, Juan GDL (November)
2000 (23): AJ
2001 (22): Tamayo, Quiambao, Chiu
2002 (21): Kai
2003 (20): Lopez
2004 (19): Mason

I think we need to focus on the 1995 and later, like what CoJ said in the seniors team thread. Plenty of those are on the non-PBA.

Oh sorry, I forgot Carl Tamayo. He should be playing in those qualifying windows as I think he & Balti are the best natural "fours' in Phi basketball right now.

I doubt about Bolick's possible call-up in Gilas now that SMC is in charge of Gilas. Long Hair most likely won't like Bolick being in the team.

Bollick is probably our best PG right now. Some things should be beyond politics.

Balti should also be here. But yes the younger guys should be included in the qualifiers.

Will edit him in. Thanks.

I think many of the roster should be in their prime, or approaching their prime. Only a few spots for elder statesmen.

With Ahamnisi signed into the SMC he might get an oppurtunity to play for the national team. And I wouldnt be surprised if SMC fast tracks Lucero's case for fiba eligibility since Northport is one of their farm teams.

another tall wing is always welcome

Yes Ahanmisi will be a good addition. He can play PG and SG.

Speaking of Balti, we have been whining that Gilas seem to always lack 3-pt shooters. Eh ayan si Balti, that's a 6-foot-7/6-foot-8 stretch-4 who can hit it from long range. It's so frustrating that a player like him isn't in the national team while a past-prime Japeth Aguilar is still playing for the national team.

I can't understand why there's an idiot in SBP who doesn't want Balti in Gilas. Ano kaya ang agenda ng gagong yan?

The PBA seems to have a brewing grudge against Delta Pineda, I think that is the only reason Baltazar isnt being called up anymore because Delta is his handler/manager.

JB played 36:39 of 40 minutes. Goes to show how weak this team is. This is essentially our team B aka best eligible PBA team. I just hope the PBA lets younger guys play in the Qualifiers.

Yeah, we need people to substitute for Japeth, Marcio, Ross, June Mar, and even Scottie, Oftana, and CJ.

Without June and Japeth we have a giant donut in the middle. We can't expect Edu to be always available, much less Kai. Kouame might not be available. We might have to be content with Geo Chiu in the middle. Or we can play either Philipps, BGR or Laput in the NP slot.

Laput is not gilas material, you have to be joking

Don't be worry, Edu and Kai (if he will stop asking higher price) will always available in Qualifiers since B-League have breaks in FIBA windows... So they will always available in FIBA sanctioned games...

Removing ineligible Philipps, those other guys at C do not inspire confidence in the future. I hope Edu's knees and Kai's back holds up.

Kai's management stop asking for a price? I don't know about that. I don't really begrudge the kid and his management the income but it doesn't really reflect well when Euro league and NBA players just receive the regular per diem.
