A 2nd place finish behind Australia is a win for me; it just means we are the best legit Asian team. Although beating Australia was possible if not for Kai's injury. They didn't field any NBA players during the last Asia Cup anyway, and Lebanon made them work for their money. Having the same finish as Lebanon’s Asia Cup run this August would be considered progress and a win.

Yeah. I strongly believed a complete Gilas team (with Kai, AJ Edu) with good preparation has a good chance of even beating Australia for the gold medal. We all know that Australia doesn't send its national team-A in the Asia Cup, so I think teams like Gilas, Lebanon, Japan, China, New Zealand have good chances of winning the 2025 Asia Cup title.

Sayang talaga that 1 of our key player won't be playing for us in the Asia Cup.

Australia is the bench mark.

They are the toughest team in the zone.

So you do confirm that anything less than beating Australia is a failure?

Australia is the Gold Standard. Meaning they are the best, numero uno defending champs.

Last time I checked we placed 9th the last Cup.

So from that point, not winning gold will be a failure for you.

What's everyone's expectations? Without Kai a podium finish still possible IMO. With him of course I think anything less than top 2 finish might be a disappointment to a lot of people considering how people dissed all the other countries except OZ

W/o Kai, finishing 4th would be satisfactory for me with a bit of a disappointment. Finishing 3rd would be fairly good. Finishing 2nd would make me happy. If we end up with the 2025 Asia Cup title, I would be ecstatic.

Anything lower than 4th place would be frustrating.

Minimum goal: 2nd place

Golden goal: 1st

you don’t get 1st without beating Australia

First, you LOLed/laughed at the prospect of us beating Australia.

Then you make beating Australia the "bench mark"

And now this.

In other words you're saying something is impossible, but at the same time it should be possible, and then even just falling short of doing the impossible should be the minimum accomplishment.

Fair expectations, same with me.

I lol’d because the task is very difficult especially with Kai out. I didn’t ridicule our chances of winning the whole thing.

what’s your problem? We placed 9th in 2022. Is that acceptable? No.

beating australia is the bench mark because if we can’t then how do you expect to challenge other world level teams?

Where did I say it shouldn’t be impossible? 2nd place is achievable and 1st place is the golden goal because it’s hard as hell and low probability.

Lol Don’t act like I’m bringing this team down.

Just calling things as is.

Nah, I said winning in August is the ultimate goal of Gilas.

For some reason you only consider us winning if we beat Australia. Like beating multiple teams to reach the Finals is "not winning."

Sure it's great to think that beating teams like Australia should be a consistent goal. But let's consistently take care of teams like Lebanon, Japan, China, etc first.

I think Australia is beatable and they have been beaten before. It’s just really tough, though I think the current Gilas has a chance of pulling it off

Lol You wanna play semantics?

I understood winning in august meant winning the gold.

Maybe specify clearly what you mean.

Let’s just leave it at: finishing as high as possible in August

CTC trying to make it clear that Doha and the 3rd window will be used as preparation for the Asia Cup in August. Specifically, a priority will be to use it to incorporate Edu into the system. In other words, winning this immediate games will not be the overriding goal...winning in August is.

That means experiment, work out the kinks, test the bench guys a lot.

But of course, once games commence, many will expect Gilas to go for the win like the fate of all Pinoy babies is on the line.

I agree with you. Since most of the guys are not healthy and unavailable, I also expect CTC to experiment with different combinations. And totally runs through August which by this time we have built chemistry.

CTC has just won an Asiad Gold, swept a FIBA window and he may make the Asia Cup his next goal.

Sorry I didn't get the memo.

Did we get a bye straight to the championship that we don't have to "win" multiple games to make it to the finals?

Well, if you seriously thought I meant winning gold was the only way of winning, then yeah it's a misunderstanding.

I've made known my expectations multiple times.

TBH, our gold medal finish in the 2023 Asian Games, as well as our mighty upset over world No. 6 Latvia & our win over New Zealand 2 months ago have somewhat raised my expectations on our Gilas team, maybe a bit higher than I should given the fact that Kai won't be playing in the Asia Cup.

Now, I ask, what would be our expectations be like if we finished 4th (w/o a medal) in the 2023 Asiad), we didn't beat Latvia & we again lost to New Zealand? Sometimes Philippine basketball is a victim by its own success. I mean its previous success.

Hopefully, many will have the same understanding.

The thing is, when the games come around people will get tunnel vision again and forget the big picture.

because of the recent development

the most impactful of it all is the Kai Sotto ACL injury which I post previously

that healing it the natural way is way better than putting tear ligament under the knife is just a second option.

maybe they've seen the severity and assured the family that surgery is the best option moving forward

"trust the modern day procedure/surgery".

anyway improving our previous 9th Place finish is very much achievable

but at least I would be very very happy if we made it at least on the bronze medal match

either against TB's mix of Team A(European based) and B(NBL based) or the Akatsuki's Paris Olympic line-up

we really do hope NBA guys like Rui and Yuki may be given a go signal considering it is still an off-season

as for the AUS, well as usual they will parade majority of their NBL guys and few of their European based ballers

well unless theirs a breaking news down the road that QMB and AK34 may eventually granted local status

then reviving the storyline of a possible "Gold Medal match against AUS Team B" may revive a lively on the other thread.

but for now were hoping that the remaining core may not encounter any rupture here and there.

It's almost a given that people would over react base on one game.

Happens every single time. Right now, we're talking about accepting that the team will experiment, tinker, prepare, etc. but the moment the games commence...why did this guy play, why did that guy not play, why didn't we do this, why use that strategy, etc.

And then some will say we could have won easily if we did this and that, the coach doesn't know what he's doing.

Someone start training Kai's younger brother now. haha And inject Cherifer into his bloodstream everyday. haha Maybe they will be in one team fifteen years from now. Or Ben Edu.
