People were hyped on Guam because they looked good prior to this qualifying window, forgetting that their opponents are ASEAN teams, Hong Kong, Mongolia and Macau.

Guam may also have special status with FIBA just like other US territory Puerto Rico…. Guam is unincorporated American territory which means all players in their NT are citizens of USA…. I think any American players can play for Guam as long as they can establish their links such as residency as such actually lived in the island for a certain period; one of their parents or grandparents were born there or even just marrying a Guam islander I think would be suffice…

Residency for at least 4 years and the grandparent rule applies to Guam. The question, however, is who are the players that will try to push their career in Guam? If I were to choose between the Korea and Guam, if I am a European or American player, I will choose Korea and that's a no-brainer.

I mean there will be US players that will play for Guam but higher caliber players will try elsewhere. Don't look that far, they will definitely try their luck on Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands first. Anyway, just look at the roster that Guam has right now. Outside Ross, Aiken, Cruz and Galloway, the rest are not playing in any pro leagues that Tai Wesley is still forced to play.

So this means "passport before 16" rule by FIBA won't apply to the Guamanians since Guamanians are US citizens.

As far as I understand, a player needs to hold the mother country's passport before 16 to be eligible as a local. In this case, a player who wants to represent Guam needs to hold US passport before 16 on top of either his 4 year residency or the grandfather rule.

no, as per Fiba Internal Regulations Book 3, if you wish to represent a dependent territory, section 3-15 doesn't apply to you. You follow 3-25 t 0 28. the way i understood this sub sections:
you must be citizen of the main country and was born in the territory; or your parent were born in the territory, or a grandparent was born in the territory. OR if none of that satisfy, just show your were staing in the territory for more than 4 years.

someone can correct me, but that looks like it.

yup, they can't apply the passport rule because the dependent territory does not have their own passport to begin with (ex. guam and puerto rico don't have their own passport, hence the citizens of those country uses US passport)

which is why Puerto Rico, who is also crazy on basketball, just 2nd to their main sports which is baseball; has an advantage on US prospects that has puerto rican decent, the player having a full-blooded puerto rican grandparent is enough to be eligible on their team as local

Guam can also apply this rule ofcourse, but they can't just spend money on high caliber players

I see. Thanks for the info. FIBA tends to be more lenient on dependencies and territories the way I see it.

Dedric Lawson might be lebanon new Naturalized player. What do you think of the player? He played last in CBA and averaged 18 pts 10 rebounds 4 assists and 38% from 3. Some sites list him as 206 and others as 203 .

For the 2025 fiba asia cup, i will celebrate when gilas makes it to a semifinal berth.

Same here bro.
Without Kai Sotto, with the way Gilas played in the 3rd window, & with a 9-day preparation, I would be very satisfied of a 4th place finish by Gilas.

If the PBA All-star festivities would be cancelled, would this mean the 2024-2025 PBA season would end earlier than planned?

Well, I hope so. Becoz if the 2024-2025 PBA season ends earlier than planned then that could mean additional few days of Gilas team preparation for the 2025 Asia Cup. An additional 4 to 5 days of Gilas team preparation would be of significant help to the national team.

except for Kevin who will be preoccupied with the possible NBA call-ups

and Kai still recovering from an ACL injury.

I think the rest barring any major injury(we do hope their is no more) had a chance to start practice either on the last days of May or 1st week of June.

to those who got eliminated in the Regular Season and 2nd week of June to those who goes deeper to the playoffs.

as per official schedule both KBL and B.League may end up it's regular season this first week of May

I think 2 to 3 weeks of rest to those ballers who had minors aches hear and there is fair enough to those overseas based players

I've already mentioned this many times before by attending the BGSM practice is the ideal option given the circumstances on hand

so by the time they started the full time training camp on or before July 27 the national players already gather some buffer stocks

9 or 6 days practice as per Grandpa Dean(the SBP/PBA advisor) during an online interview is not the ideal practice for a major event like this.

I remember watching on tv that presscon about the launching of PBA50 during the holy week

wherein Grandpa Ricky V mentioned that winning the Asian Game gold shows that the PBA is still the number 1 here in Asia

and they will do anything to defend that crown next year to really solidify that claim.

if you read between the lines they've never mentioned the preparation for the coming FIBA Asia Cup

it seems that the real deal is on Sept. 19, to Oct. 4, 2026 at Aichi-Nagoya

I really do hope I'm wrong on this

@BJ _Reloaded

I mentioned this about some weeks ago that since our B-league & KBL & Gilas members, as well as Justine Brownlee would be available for Gilas training as early as 1st week of June, then maybe coach Tim Cone can implement "every Monday" Gilas practice leading to the end of the Filipino Cup championship series which would end at around last week of July. Now, never mind if in each of those "every Monday" practices a few players (say 1 or 2 players) would be absent. For instance in the 1st Gilas practice, players A & D are absent, but they are going to attend the 2nd, 3rd, 4th , 5th & all the practices in the future. Then in the 2nd practice, players B & E would be absent, but they are going to attend all the succeeding Gilas practices after that.

For instance, there would be Gilas practices that coach Tim can't attend coz he's too occupied with Ginebra (for instance Ginebra plays in the Filipino Cup championship), then asst. coach Richard Del Rosario or LA Tenorio should take over. If the "every Monday" practice would start in the 1st week of June, then Gilas will have an additional 8 days of practice to add to its 9-day practices prior to the 2025 Asia Cup.

I think napakalaking bagay yung additional 8 days of practice na yun. Coach Tim, PBA, SBP have to be creative & innovative to make our beloved Gilas team battle ready for the Asia Cup.

Speaking of KQ, he's 6'4 and in KBL looks to be a volume shooter, he does not have the handles of a guard or wing to be an effective 2-3 player. He does not have the foot speed to guard the quicker players. Im wondering if his NBA opportunities might be influenced by connections rather than purely his on-court abilities.

Not a hater, but I think that's an overstatement. I don't think there's any real chance of a call-up. At most, during his US trip, he might get to train and try out, but I don't see him being chosen for an NBA Summer League team.

I just can’t see him landing a spot on any Summer League roster.

He plays as a big at 6'4" and doesn't have the handle or consistent shooting to play the wing position. That’s a big no-no, even in the Summer League.

Hell, even Kai—who’s probably our best shot at having an NBA player and easily our top local talent right now—was just the 15th man on the Orlando Magic’s Summer League team. So what makes us think KQ has a real shot at a call-up?

I'm pretty sure his US trip is mainly for skill development—training and maybe trying out for a Summer League spot—but I seriously doubt he’ll make a roster.

I think he’ll be available early for Gilas practice ahead of the FIBA Asia Cup.

He himself said his current teammate Alan Williams has a connection in the US that made the possibility of a possible try out for a summer league team happened, so pretty sure it was connections. I don't think he got scouted the same way as Yuki Kawamura in BLeague and Olympics.

Guys, thank you for the correction

I think I should add in that statement " possible NBA Summer Camp Call-up".

I slipped on that,..I'm not being mindful on that very first line.

I totally agree on the so-called "he must improve"...e.g. handles and footworks

I think the advantages on KQuiam for now is his big hands and BBIQ.

at his age those handles and footworks should had been address when he is still in his childhood years.

again I will borrow Sir Metta's "10k hrs."

I'm talking about all sports in general.

all aspiring athletes nowadays should learned that principle,

Alex Eala, Carlos Yulo, EJ Obiena, Wesley So, Daniel Quizon, Sandro Reyes and Yuka Saso pop-up in mind.
