Having a longer preparation, say about 4 weeks or more, isn't just about achieving cohesion, chemistry & getting the players assimilated to the coach' system. It is also about getting into the right form/condition, pacing, & simulating the FIBA game atmosphere. U can't achieve that in a 9-day time frame. No way. Of course we are aware that current Gilas team already has an established cohesion or chemistry & its players are well assimilated with coach Tim Cone's triangle & other schemes, but I think the team would still need to get into the right form & rhythm in order to play as efficiently as it should in a major tournament like the Asia Cup.
U see, preparing for a window qualifier is different from preparing for a tournament proper. Kasi sa window qualifier, you're just playing 2 games while in a window qualifier, U will be playing 5 to 7 games, depending on how far U will go to that tournament. Of course, in a tournament proper, more is at stake than in a window qualifier.
I mentioned pacing, becoz U can't just simply make your players train/practice/scrimmage everyday in that preparation period without any rest. There would be times when the coach has to give his players some day off for them to get the much needed rest. How can you do that in a 9-day preparation period?
I mentioned "simulating the FIBA game atmosphere", I'm referring to tune-up or friendly games that a team has to play as part of its preparation. Those tune-up games will simulate the FIBA game & will keep our players sharp. The more the tune-up games, the better. But of course hindi naman yung subra masyado madaming tune-up games becoz that would burn the players out. I think 5 to 6 tune-up games in 1 month training period would be good.
Again I say, it's hard to imagine that our beloved Gilas team will get a 9-day training period when majority of our opponents will get the benefit of a 1-month or even more training time frame. Yung mga kalaban natin will have enough tune-up games & they will be pacing themselves well.
